  • Many people daydream about traveling the world, but all of them have the same excuse - lack of money. Tomislav, after traveling the world for years with almost no money, shows how it is possible for everyone to do the same, if they really want to.
Tomislav Perko, 29, is a travel writer from Croatia. After a career of a stockbroker, broke because of the financial crisis, he hits the road and turns it into his home. He uses alternative ways of traveling - hitchhiking, couchsurfing, working/volunteering, and manages to wander around the world with just a little bit of money in his pocket, meeting the most amazing people on the way.

Five years later, he publishes a book “1000 Days of Spring” and goes around giving lectures about what it means to live on the road. Find out more on his website: tomislavperko.com/en/.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

We (me and my wife) left in 2016 for our travels. We sold our house and quitted our jobs. We have saved some money. For one and a half years we traveled through much countries. We heard so many stories, so many different people, so many different food, and so many things we have learned. Before we left we had the same fear of getting out of our comfertzone, but after 2 weeks it was gone. It was replaced by a feeling of freedom, adventure, and happiness. We never traveled like this before. We came back in 2018 and, especially me, hit a wall. We have seen how beautifull the world can be. People and nature. Being back in our own country (The Netherlands) was hard and still is (2019). We agreed to travel more. There is so much to see and to explore and to learn. Don't stay in your own comfortzone; try to get out of it. We did it and we will never forget it.

I dont see any specific danger in traveling unless you are entering a war-zone or a bad neighborhood in a criminal Latin American or African country. Always look at crime-rate in a country before entering it. There is a numbeo statistic on this. Just compare numbers with your own country or with USA.

As for women afraid to hitch hike instead just choose countries with cheap forms of transportation. For example, in Nassau, Bahamas you pay $1 to travel anywhere on the island on a jitney

I liked his speech. But I do think some people are disappointed with what's given in the video, I was a little too. This emphasizes on traveling to places where the cost of living is very low, places that aren't as developed as places like New York, so your lack of visa won't be noticed, even if it's still dangerous to travel without a visa.

Begging to have the experience of a lifetime is not called being helped by nice People. I always despised People like you that want to travel the world on the 'backs' of normal hard working People.
And travelling the world like this is only accessible to nationalities that dont need a Visa to travel around, otherwise planning and paying for those visas (that is if they were granted) would be nearly impossible and would be costing lots of money.

You made my day! when for a while I've lost hope in what I was doing for past 5 years, traveling and living my dreams, waking up every day saying "i love my life"... Thank you! And the words at the end, it's like you were saying the words I couldn't find. You're amazing and true not like most of the vloggers who sells idea how to travel by saying "just become a vlogger ". Keep doing what you're doing ! Hope to meet you one day somewhere around the world 😊

I love all these points. However I think that hitchhiking as an option changes when you are a woman. I have hitchhiked in several places but they were mainly on Vancouver Island and Kauai...both safe in many ways. I wouldn't hitchhike in the places I plan to go because honestly the narrative is different as a woman...which is honestly really sad because it's free and you meet amazing people. I have sadly...been in some nerve wracking situations.

Transportation and accommodation is nothing. You can walk on your feet if you have lots of time, and you can sleep in a tent or some abandoned house you find. It's only daily necessities that cost you. I didn't like couchsurfing cuz I am usually afraid that the host would murder me asleep... 😂

I'm a woman, and I also travel like that : couchsurfing + hitchhiking is the best combination. Those who saying "it's not for women", look at me - I'm still alive. And to tell you more: for women it may be even easier than for men. Good luck ladies and gentlemen :)))
