How to travel the world with almost no money | Tomislav Perko | TEDxTUHH

  • Published on Feb 9, 2015
  • Many people daydream about traveling the world, but all of them have the same excuse - lack of money. Tomislav, after traveling the world for years with almost no money, shows how it is possible for everyone to do the same, if they really want to.
Tomislav Perko, 29, is a travel writer from Croatia. After a career of a stockbroker, broke because of the financial crisis, he hits the road and turns it into his home. He uses alternative ways of traveling - hitchhiking, couchsurfing, working/volunteering, and manages to wander around the world with just a little bit of money in his pocket, meeting the most amazing people on the way.

Five years later, he publishes a book “1000 Days of Spring” and goes around giving lectures about what it means to live on the road. Find out more on his website:

18:00 I'm not a big traveller but I have been around a few states and a couple of countries. One thing I did was to live like a retiree at the ages of 32 to 42. Best decision I made. I enjoyed life to the max. I was young to do it. I didn't want to wait to be older, to retire then I couldn't do what I liked since my body will aged and it'll probably prohibited me from doing it. Now in a job that does not allow me to travel, surf, MTB, or skate as much as before, but one I thing I do is to think what I did for that decade. The freedom, the joy, to live the dream and that just put a smile on my face.

How you crossed borders without visa, if you have then how can it be travelling without no money 🤔

  • Faizan
    Faizan 5 days ago

Exactly.. All you ever need is a good passport. otherwise you will be spending all your money in getting visa and useless flight tickets

So basically, he had what most of us lack; money to start with. You do need some to begin with. So it will remain a pipe dream for many without the means to get the things to start with.

"what did i learn, some personal stuff, so i won't talk about that." - that's extremely intelligent, it's boring being lectured on how you found the meaning of life and want to impose it amazingness on me. i'm becoming homeless (in a way) soon and decided that hey, rather than having nowhere to live, i can in fact live anywhere, so, i have to do that thing, just get started and hitch to aus and then the pacific. great talk.

Yes, I started to traveland seeing the planet with only 20 dollars in my pocket in 1970 - present. ( No lonely planet guide book )

I have always been interested in traveling, when my schools German club was going to Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Lichtenstein I simply couldn’t pass it up. I went. I loved it and the first thing I told my mother when I got home I told her I would visit all 196 countries. I have 6 done. I’m 18. I leave for college in 3 months. I am hoping to study abroad for a full year in Germany. Any advice?
