  • Automotive startups always need to be viewed with a little caution, but as Jonny Smith discovers, Rivian have presented a very convincing launch. A large SUV and pick up truck at the LA motor show. Most impressive.

Well the presenter misspoke when he said they are the only company which builds truck type EV's in North America. VIA Motors in Utah is actually the first manufacturer of full-sized fully electric and hybrid American pickup trucks and vans from the Big 3 automakers used mostly in the commercial market ie; package delivery, utility services, mining, and emergency vehicles. Still it's nice to have another entrant into the full-sized SUV/pickup truck fully electric vehicle market and these Rivian vehicles are really nice. Maybe I can afford a used one in twenty years from now as $70k is out of my grasp. Since I won't be alive in twenty years from now, guess its just a dream.

Texas boy through and through but I've never been a truck guy either. I never understood why these guys buy huge pick ups just to park them in the lot at their office. And they are always the slowest and most in the way on any road you get on. Now that doesn't have to be the case. You don't have to be a gas guzzling, smoke blowing, POS who sits in the fast lane in the way of every car on the highway. Now you can have a truck and not be an idiot. You can have a truck that is useful in many way. I love this idea, I loved the concept years ago when I first heard of it, and while I realize this isn't the kind of truck you take to the construction site to haul bricks, it is nice to finally see something new and different that I can look forward to.

What a phenomenal vehicle. Although slightly smaller than the F150 it does have a lot more storage so in fact this makes a lot more sense. The lack of tunnel for the shaft etc all adds up to make this a better truck than the 150.

I didn’t watch the whole entire video, keep that in mind. Would knee to waist deep water drown the motors for each individual wheel. This is a market changing vehicle, but I don’t want to see it go with one fatal flaw... A little bit of water.
Edit: thank you for reading through my whole comment. In the seconds of typing this, the spokesman had said that the truck is able to withstand a meter within water. I should probably start watching the whole video before question.

I wish these electric vehicles would stop focusing on speed. I know they’re capable of insanely quick speeds and that’s nice but not needed. There’s speed limits on 90% of roads so it doesn’t do me any good to go 0-60 in 3 seconds. You know what does help? Going further than any gas motor and charging faster than a cell phone. Get to it.

    • sedo

While I want more EV on the market, we must remember that building and selling cars is hard. Many car companies have come and gone. Hell, the biggest car companies in the US have mostly gone bankrupt at least once each and had to be bailed out by the government. And those are monies we'll never see again as taxpayers or investors. So don't get your hopes up. Over 90% of the new startups in the vehicle market fail... because the vehicle market is flush with competition and the well established companies have the funds to weather the bad sales years.

in a way, it's a nice idea. At the other, the car is sauare. You could save tons of energy just by shaping that ting in an eggform.

    • sedo
      sedo 9 days ago

@Bob Outélama Look at the design language, they refreshingly went far away from the melted bar of soap / egg shape, and I am glad they did. I like the Tesla model S though, can't stand the X.

Having said that, Rivian did work on the aerodynamics of their vehicles. Watch this short teaser, ru-clip.com/video/AomlZV2AGt4/video.html

Absolutely you could, it'd be more aerodynamic and better efficient but who wants to drive an egg? I wouldn't. It doesn't appeal to the need for a macho truck. They have nailed this. love the roof rack being able to clip on to the truck bed too.

Might take some time to properly transform industries to make them completely green, or as green as electric vehicles, and even then some things are just finite and will run out. The thing is, we probably won't have enough time to subsidise resources to make the manufacturing processes behind the modern world for anything, much less electric cars, before we're in big, big trouble.
