I was surprised to see that one of your writers recognized both the legend of St. Sebastien, and the Mantegna painting, as the framework for interpreting the image of Muhammad Ali, and that another of your writers recognized a Catherine wheel. I was surprised because I imagine you all to be Millennials, and so to have no interest in anything but pop culture, and even then no interest in pop culture much earlier than the 50s.
That said, you forgot the Hustler cover showing a model head down in a meat grinder. That image should tell you that, even though there was no Photoshop then, photographers had many ways to manipulate photographs. I rather doubt that it was necessary for anyone to hold a gun to the dog's head. Even if they had, do you really think they would have used a real gun with bullets in the chamber? And do you think that the dog would have been alarmed? Don't be such pussies.

When the Rolling Stone issue with the Boston bomber came out, I was working at Barnes & Noble, and this one woman was so furious about it. She ranted at me for several minutes that we were carrying this, and demanded the phone number for the CEO, and if not his number, than BN's head office. She made sure to tell us that she'd never shop with us again. I wonder if she made the same scene at every grocery, pharmacy, airport, etc. All I could tell her was that we didn't choose what magazines we carried, and we certainly didn't choose who they were going to put on the front cover, and if she had a complaint, tell Rolling Stone.

That Vietnam picture doesn't bother me as much as it clearly does others. The guy had duct tape over his mouth and eyes, hardly the worst thing of the war, come on people were being shot, napalmed, shelled, and just blown up, but taping a guy up is crossing a line, really? Is it the kindest thing ever, far from it, but as far as ugly sides of war go, that isn't so bad.

Well, it is more sane to breastfeed from your own mom than breastfeeding from a different spieces all your adult life, as most humans do. Imagine a grown man/woman laying in a barn, sucking on the teat of a cow, drinking milk stolen from the cows child. That is way more fucked up than drinking the milk willingly given by your own mother. Just saying. And no, I dont drink my moms milk or any other moms milk. Im not an infant and Im not a baby cow.

Oh my god, thank you so much for saying this! I have said this same thing many, many times before, often in YT comment sections, and have almost always been told that I'm judgmental, stupid, and/or whiny, or that it's none of my business what other people do. People say that if one person chooses to eat animal products, they are doing nothing to harm anyone else, blah, blah, blah--and I just don't see how people can think that eating animal products is a harmless choice. And yes, cow's milk is for baby cows, not humans, just as human milk is for baby humans. Why is that so hard for people to accept?
Sorry to go on about it; I'm just so pleased to see your comment. Have a wonderful day.

Fun fact about Britney Spears' Rolling Stone cover: The half naked cover photo was not part of her management's plan at all, the photo was actually taken in Britney's childhood bedroom and the props in the photograph belonged to her. At some point during the photoshoot her manager came in and saw her being photographed in her underwear and freaked out. Britney asked the photographer to lock the door after the manager left and proceeded on taking the pictures which were later on used for the magazine cover.
Much of what many people thought at the time was her PR teams masterplan was actually just either a happy accident or a result of her personally wanting to do it.

As a person who has a LIFETIME SUBSCRIPTION to Rolling Stone magazine, I am still shocked that they gave the Boston Bomber the cover!! Money or not, to treat him like a famous, renowned inspiration was the worst! The RS staff should have given Dr Hook the cover, not him. And I noticed that right after this issue, the very next issue had Springsteen on his European tour, then RS finally gave KISS the cover, then Stevie Nicks after so many decades, then Ringo Starr...... but giving the Boston Bomber the cover was the worst mistake they made since giving the cover to a shirtless David Cassidy in 1978, and to Chevy Chase in 1983. However, the uncommented issue of John Lennon naked, kissing Yoko Ono, is not controversial, but instead an issue that truly captures the moment. That cover gave all of America the bookmarked reminder that John Lennon was brutally murdered, kissing Yoko goodbye in her sadness. In Memoriam indeed!
