Sandra Oh Makes History At The 2019 Golden Globes, And She Thanks Her Parents In Korean

  • Published on Jan 7, 2019
  • At the 2019 Golden Globe Awards, Sandra Oh became the first actress of Asian descent to win multiple Golden Globes, the first person of Asian descent to host the ceremony, and the first woman of Asian descent in 39 years to win the Globe for best actress in a television drama. During her acceptance speech, we witnessed one of the most heartwarming moments of the night when the Killing Eve actress told her parents she loves them in Korean.

Such a touching moment of humility and intimate emotion, when she said, "어마 아빠 사랑해요" it was like for a brief moment she was a little girl again expressing unfiltered filial piety.

Just proving it for the ladies! You don't have to be attractive or even talented to get paid way more than you're worth and at the same time receive meaningless accolades. Well done! Her scripted facade is so transparently blech, blah, and Oh so Canadian.

These people are super wealthy liars- the widely replicated, scientific

Beautiful, so beautiful, she is so gorgeous and she deserve this win, she a talented actress and I'm so happy that she won with so much grace and acceptance, she didn't forget her heritage, she honor them by telling her parents how much she love them in their own language, that is beautiful. I'm so happy for her, she deserve this win and I wish her the best, can't wait to see more of her acting and talents on screen. Thank you so much Sandra Oh for inspiring all of us to believe that one day we will be able to stand on that stage where you are as a proud Asian with so much of our heritage to share and equality for all, thank you and congratulation, much love.

As a women of color I am just sitting her so proud and happy!!! Sandra Oh is a Boss! When I took a job promotion and I needed to up grade my laptop that was going to be glued to me. I named her Lady Yang after Sandra Oh's Character on Grey's anatomy 😍. I kicked butt at that job. I was the only black person and black women on that management team. I still have Lady Yang with me today. And I smile when I think about that character because Christina didn't let anything get in her way. Seeing Sandra Oh doing these amazing things in real life brings so much joy! Thank you so much

This is a special moment for us though. Yes, she has been in the industry for a long time, but this time, it's different because they finally had an Asian to host the show and she won a huge award. So yes, she made history. One of the only Asians to win a Golden Globes and to host one too.

It's not just an 'American show' it was adapted from a book written by a British author, screenplay by a British writer, with a British supporting lead in Jodie Comer, for a BBC (also, British) export in BBC America. So as arrogant as American's seem to be, Sandra's success wasn't solely due to America or the opportunities Hollywood has to offer. Without that list of international influence, the show wouldn't exist or be as good. I think we can agree that a whole host of incredible content, talent and success has been experienced due to America embracing outside influences. In a nutshell, it's not all about America, the industry is international regardless of the award ceremony location.

I respect the fact that she's not ashamed of being Asian and embraces her Korean heritage as well. I've seen too many westernized Asians who pretend like they can't speak even the basics of their own native language despite having traditional Asian parents who immigrated from Asia and can't speak much English. Which obviously means that they speak in their native language at home majority of the time.

    • james
      james 3 months ago

@Megan Yinh What's ignorant and biased about it? Having a parent that speaks mainly in their native tongue since your birth and not being able to say the basics makes no sense. I have a friend who's *4th generation* Japanese-American and even she can say basic things like "hi," "bye," and count 1-10 in Japanese at the very least and her parents speak Japanese just as little as her. I'm not saying Asian-Americans should be able to speak their ethnic language fluently or casually, but having immigrant parents from Asia, you should be able to pick up words here and there. I'm far from being fluent, but just like my Japanese friend, I know at least the basics of my ethnic language without even being taught because I picked it up just listening to my parents talk. I also have another Chinese friend who lived with her zero English speaking parents and somehow claims to have zero knowledge of the Chinese language. That just makes no sense. My other friend asked her, "how do you say 'hi' in Chinese?" and she said she didn't know. That's just weird to me.
Also, you would be a 2nd generation American if you were born in this country and had parents that came from Asia. It wouldn't make sense to not be able to speak the language if you're first generation, since that would mean you immigrated from Asia. Your parents are the 1st generation Americans.

    • Megan Yinh
      Megan Yinh 3 months ago

That's a highly biased and ignorant perspective. I'm a first generation Asian with a dad who speaks broken English. I literally cannot speak the language and do not speak it at home. I would never pretend that I cannot speak the language. Far from being embarrassed, I am proud and feel blessed to have the cultural diversity that comes with both my Western and Asian influences.
I am not fluent, but I am learning now and it's been a wonderful process. Folks it is never too late to learn!
