Switch to chips to increase security... but don't stop using magstrips because the chips fail quickly with the technology we're using...
I feel like somebody wanting to use your card would just program the magstrip onto another card, then scratch the chip on the other card... Then they run it 3 times with the chip failing, and run the old method...

Chip and contactless cards are not secure. Contactless is particularly susceptible to abuse. As for needing millions of dollars of equipment to "hack" the chip, absolutely ridiculous. Both methods are mildly more secure than mag stripe, but only barely. They are, however, rendered completely insecure either way due to the fact that mag stripe is still included on all cards!

    You think those are secure?
Well then, I'll see you in the subway with a payment machine, just innocently moving it around your pockets.

Rust is actually iron hydroxyde. Also, electric and magnetic fields are not the same because electric fields are created by static charges and magnetic fields - by charges in motion. Finally to the point: many cards feature both chip and magnetic stripe making them vulnerable even if only chip is used because malevolent persons can place stripe reader in the slot where card is inserted to use its chip.

I worked with multi-tesla NMR spectrometers and have had experience with erased credit cards. You should know that mag-stripes come in two flavors, low coercivity (natively brown) and high coercivity (natively black). The Hi-Co cards are a lot more resistant to large fields. Very small fields (like your first magnet) have high dB/dt and are really good at erasing mag stripes. Loved the video!

Why don't they switch to optical if the magnet stripe data is just static barcode data? I know chips are taking over and stripe thing is obsolete but they still put magstripes today on the cards as a secondary method. Why not optical?

I don't know if you have any experience with Samsung Pay, but this is what Samsung phones use for its contactless payment. That's why it can work pretty much anywhere, because it changes the magnetic field to make a card swiper think a card has been swiped. Really cool video though, I understood how Samsung Pay worked but the part where you stuck the particles to the credit card really helped visualize why it's ultimately possible!

I’m from Chile and we made the move to chips and contactless tech few years ago, and our bus/metro pass has always been contactless. However, watching this video I’ve remembered the time I “deleted” the info on my pass by keeping both my phone and pass in the same tight pocket. Also last year there was a huge issue with contactless tech here bc the range in which the card could be read (by different devices) was wider than expected (card-kept-in-a-wallet-inside-a-bag wide). So it might be fun to find other culprits on our damaged cards!

Those magnetic strips are actually pretty robust, it takes a good charge to erase one. When your hotel key stops working, the clerk always asks you if you brought it close to a cell phone. That's just a way of blaming you instead of admitting that they did something. The signal from your phone is nowhere near strong enough to mess up your card.

Please make a video explaining why light slows down in dense materials. I find it difficult to accept theories that imply photon interaction with the material's atoms (for example, a photon being absorbed and then re-emitted by an atom) because if that was true, light speed would diminish progressively, more and more, with the length of the denser mean.

??anybody have thoughts on the "copper sphere

Its actually a hollow sphere, thick copper, strong magnet inside.
If rolled or shook, it should create an electro/magnetic field.
also, soft shock absorber like seat and space capsules.
    -Hollow sphere, magnet.

The only places in France that only use magstripe are highway tolls (and they don't require signature). It's a trade off to ensure fast flow. Everywhere else magstripe readers are only used with foreign cards that don't have a chip. if your card has a chip they will refuse magstripe payment on the suspicion of fraud.

Surprised you didn't mention the issue of contactless pick-pocketing.
If anything it is LESS secure than magstripe as it doesn't require any interaction from the owner.
Any portable hand held card reader with contactless enabled can be used to just steal up to £30 per time from random people just by holding it near their pocket of bag (like on the train for example).
The only way to combat this is to have rfid blocking screens in your wallet or bag, which not many people know about.

Once upon a time I was computer repair tech. There was a product named Magna-See that we'd use to inspect track alignment/signal-quality on the read/write heads in magnetic tape units. One would dip a piece of recorded mag tape in the fluid, remove it, and let the solvent evaporate. You could see the Flux changes on the tape thanks to the incredibly small magnetic particles suspended in the fluid & that adhered to the mag tape. I don't think that product is around any more but there is one named Kyread SDF-130A that looks like an equivalent. That might be a handy resource for any future experiment where you need to visualize magnetically recorded signals.
