I imagine the thing that would bother today's GOP about this cartoon is that Santa re-integrates "misfits" which in this story are irregular, slightly different beings, back into society. The majority has banished the "misfits" to live somewhere "else". Why? Because when the "misfits" are banished and safely out of sight, the majority doesn't have to feel badly about treating them unfairly. When Santa asks the "misfits" for their help, he allows them to not only save Christmas but to prove to the majority that they are worthy of respect in their own right. The majority learns it's lesson and the "misfits" are joyfully accepted back into society. That's called a "good ending" Also, Prejudice in all it's ugliness, yes, still, a good ending.
Today's GOP would never support anything like that. Apparently they can't even bear the thought of it in a fictionalized stop-motion cartoon from 1964. But I was ten years old then and my understanding of being an American was, and still is, that everyone should help each other and recognize the contributions that can and should be made by everyone to the Common Good. You can sum it up in just two words: Be Kind. Isn't it a shame that today's GOP can't understand it and feels threatened by it?

I consider myself pretty liberal, but I don’t remember this movie being like that at all. I mean, I remember Rudolph being bullied, but isn’t that the point? To make children empathize with a victim of bullying so that they don’t bully others? Besides, Rudolph being bullied is kind of his entire backstory. I don’t remember any sexism in the movie, but I haven’t watched it in years. Anyway, I feel like this is a knee jerk reaction to anything that addresses even mildly sensitive topics. Lashing out at anything that doesn’t conform to your world view is a very narrow way of thinking. Diversity includes diversity of thought and opinions. Discourse on these sensitive topics are important and can’t be achieved if we are constantly trying to censor anything that we find disagreeable. Also, if this was actually problematic, why is it only this year that anyone noticed?

Of course "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" is about bullying and sexism. It clearly shows the problems and personal pain caused by bigotry; in this case it was the bullied Rudolph who saved the day.
All morality plays work that way: show the bad behavior, then show the harm it can do, then show its irrelevance, and then show the correct behavior and the benefits derived therefrom.

You know it sucks when a piece of Satire or Comedy gets way out of proportion. In some ways you do come to see the symbolism or resemblance to what that piece is talking about. Sometimes it leads to a talk if such a thing is okay in our society. Sometimes we just move on as it’s simply just a joke, not meant to be taken seriously.

Yes there is bullying and sexism in Rudolph, but isn't the whole point of the movie that the bullying behavior is portrayed as a negative thing and the "misfits" save the day? I definitely remember viewing the coach reindeer as the villain as a child.

Fridge logic - At the end, Rudolph is accepted, not because the other reindeer actually admit they're wrong, but because he's suddenly useful. So kind of a broken Aesop. Admittedly, it's the same with the source material.

      Point Particle
Wrong. They all felt bad for their behavior after Rudolph ran away. His father went searching for him. Santa came to apologize. They were celebrating their return when the storm hit, and that’s when Santa noticed Rudolph’s natural talent. By then Rudolph had accepted himself, had no need for the others approval, and decided on his own to help Santa. It’s called forgiveness.

    • Point Particle
Point Particle 6 months ago +10

@Mr. H, Rudolph's mother liked him, and Clarice liked him. Hermey the elf liked him and Yukon Cornelius wasn't a jerk to him. Otherwise:
1.) Rudolph's father (Donner) was embarrassed by him.
2.) Santa told Donner he should be ashamed of Rudolph.
3.) Comet, coaching the reindeer flight training, shunned Rudolph *AND* encouraged the other reindeer to ostracize him from the group.
It isn't until Santa has a need that he sees Rudolph can satisfy, that he asks him to guide the sleigh. If I were Rudolph I would have had a very hard time taking the high road/being the better man, and instead of accepting, told Santa to stick it in his ***** sideways. It wasn't until I was older that I understood this and realized Donner, Comet, Santa and all the young reindeer were ****heads. It's nice to be able to point out how rude all these characters are, to the kids watching today.

I've always found Rudolph offensive. The reindeer shunned him. Santa didn't do anything about it until he needed Rudolph to guide his sleigh. I don't like the implied message that if you aren't useful to someone, they don't have time for you. Just my personal feeling about it.

    • Point Particle
Point Particle 6 months ago +5

1.) Rudolph's father (Donner) was embarrassed by him.
2.) Santa told Donner he should be ashamed of Rudolph.
3.) Comet, coaching the reindeer flight training, shunned Rudolph AND encouraged the other reindeer to ostracize him from the group.

You don't need to be a scholar to see that these three adults are being grade-A dicks to a child. Then, when Santa realizes Rudolph has something he needs, he's all cool with his uncommon circumstance. In the end, Rudolph took the high road. If I were Rudolph, I would have have told them all to ****** off. I never picked up on any of this when I watched this show as a kid, which is why our family still watches it today. If you cant bring yourself to acknowledge these obvious facts of the show, maybe you have a problem. Facts don't care about your feelings. - Ben Shapiro.

As stupid as DTJ and DJ are, this attacking every old movie and show we’ve ever loved labeling them as all racist, sexist, and promoting awful things is getting ridiculous. Once we start monitoring what people are and are not allowed to watch because it might offend someone as well as what people can and can’t say, we begin to break down the very foundations of freedom that we are supposed to have as Americans. I don’t give a fuck what people try to think it promotes, my kids are watching Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer during Christmas time, to learn that bullying isn’t okay, and that one “person” can make a difference and save the day, and still get the girl, or whatever your “preference” is. Stop crying

Rudy Giuliani, if a red-nosed reindeer became a lawyer for the Republicans.

I might need a new monitor, the colour seemed off @0:55 (Shouldn't there be a hint of orange?)

I hate reindeer almost as much as I hate reporters and the free press in general.

It sucks when Trump Jr. is the less terrible of the two sides being portrayed.
Whenever anyone suggests something like that, folks should simply respond with a pic of South Park's PC babies.

Implying liberalism is a "disease" because some idiot thinks something is offensive is just as terrible.
