I think a lot of people are missing the point in trying to compare the Spanish and English versions. They were written at the same time by the same man, and because of that, this translation is probably one of the best English translations of a song I've ever seen. It accomplishes that by not being a *literal* translation of the text, but instead finding the English words to convey the metaphor in a non-clunky way.
You aren't meant to compare them. The Art is the Art. If the Spanish version hits you harder, that's fine. If the English version hits you harder, that is also fine. It's not a contest. It's the same song, beautifully bridging the language barrier by a master of the craft.

For me, the spanish version still hits harder. It could be due to my native language being spanish and the translation is more beautiful. The translation wasn’t off so im glad that english speakers can also enjoy this beautiful song. It’s now my mom and I’s special song since my sister and I are her little orugitas 💕🐛

Something you’d miss in the Spanish part is that the way they say “oruguitas” near when they meet is the like “younger” version. Referring to young caterpillars. Cause they’re young when they meet

My parents forced me to reply the song with English subtitles because they enter to know the meaning behind the song sense they dont speak a lick of Spanish. I was confused as to why because I'm the type to understand lyrics in movies like this based on the movie it self and meanings behind words. But it clicked and it as like ahhh okie ye and I'm glad I did because it's nice to study lyrics and know the words and entire meaning behind them :3

It's the best decision ever made that they chose the Spanish version in the movie. Most of the movies chose the english version in the movie, then put the native language version playing in the credits. I'm still glad having this English version in the credits, it serves as a translation who couldn't understand the Spanish version one, like me, a non-Spanish speaker. Thank you for this beautiful song, I cried in this every time It plays in the flashback scene. ACADEMY, PLEASE GIVE THIS A NOMINATION FOR BEST ORIGINAL SONG.. maybe make this a winner

@Emily Santibañez in some ways, yeah. There are certain lines where it's more clear in English the meaning he was going for, but there are some missed opportunities in the English as well. My favorite line is "no se aguanten mas" - "don't hold back anymore", but he sings "don't you hold on too tight".

I completely agree, I think it may be because the writer/creator of the song Lin Manuel Miranda is a native Spanish and native English speaker so we feels and understands the meaning and feeling of the words in both languages in his composition. Also, the singer, Sebastian Yatra, is a native English and Spanish speaker as well bringing and feeling the emotion thought language that is a part of their heart and soul... They are both Latinos- Lin Manuel Miranda- Puerto Rican and Sebastian Yatra- Colombian so they are a living expression of the feeling and soul of our beautiful culture...

same... didn't expect to cry not just on the song but on the whole movie, since I can relate to the struggles of the madrigal, especially on both Luisa and Isabella... kinda felt both their struggles are fused to be mine... also wanted to show the movie on my mother, which might heal and fix the family struggles, just wished I showed it to her immediately instead of waiting for a chance... she died just two weeks ago, due to complication on her booster shot

I started a family young. Four children by the time I turned 30. When I left their mother after her heart left me, I have spent two years in a terrible depression with a complete lack of self worth. This song helps me to remember that it is my time to grow. For the last two years I have held on too tight, yearning for what was and blind to what is now possible. For anyone that has a similar experience; shine on you crazy diamond, you are yet to discover your true worth, and you are worth it, trust me.

What I fucking love about the lyrics “Dos oruguitas, caccooned and waiting” is that it has amazing dual symbolism. It can refer to Abuela and Pedro about to become “butterflies” by growing and making a family, but ultimately becoming stuck in a chrysalis because they couldn’t complete the cycle together. There’s heavily symbolism for Abuela being a chrysalis from the scene where her walk doesn’t change throughout the generations, to her entire room being built the exact same way her original house was down to the tiles. It isn’t until another chrysalis comes along, Mirabel the girl without a miracle waiting on her chance to feel like she belongs. It takes both of them understanding each other for them to grow and both become butterflies. Truly amazing writing.

    Two oruguitas
    In love and yearning
    Spend every evening
    And morning learning
    To hold each other
    Their hunger burning
    To navigate a world
That turns, and never stops turning
    Together in this world
That turns, and never stops turning
    Two oruguitas
    Against the weather
    The wind grows colder
    But they're together
    They hold each other
    No way of knowing
They're all they have for shelter
And something inside them is growing
    They long to stay together
But something inside them is growing
    Ay, oruguitas
Don't you hold on too tight
    Both of you know
    It's your time to grow
    To fall apart, to reunite
    Wonders await you
    Just on the other side
    Trust they'll be there
    And start to prepare
    The way for tomorrow
    Ay, oruguitas
Don't you hold on too tight
    Both of you know
    It's your time to grow
    To fall apart, to reunite
    Wonders await you
    Just on the other side
    Trust they'll be there
    Start to prepare
    The way for tomorrow
    Two oruguitas
    Cocooned and waiting
    Each in their own world
    Anticipating
    What happens after
    The rearranging?
    And so afraid of change
In a world that never stops changing
So let the walls come down
The world will never stop changing
    (Never stop changing)
    (Never stop changing)
    (Never stop changing)
    Ay, mariposas
Don't you hold on too tight
    Both of you know
    It's your time to go
    To fly apart, to reunite
    Wonders surround you
Just let the walls come down
    Don't look behind you
    Fly till you find
    Your way toward tomorrow
    Ay, mariposas
Don't you hold on too tight
    Both of you know
    It's your time to go
    To fly apart, to reunite
    Wonders surround you
Just let the walls come down
    Don't look behind you
    Fly till you find
    Your way toward tomorrow
    Ay, mariposas
Don't you hold on too tight
    Both of you know
    It's your time to go
    To fly apart, to reunite

The Spanish version has something special like it's more heart-touching from how Sebastian Yatra sang. But this English version hits harder especially I understood the lyrics. I would still prefer Spanish, then English. Encanto is one of the best films Disney ever made, no doubt.

It's because the song writter wrote a Spanish and English version instead of having an original Spanish translated after the fact by someone else. It's of course more beautiful in Spanish because when someone sings in their native tongue the emotion flows effortlessly but in keeping the same singer we still get some emotion. I agree with you Disney did good on this

I may not be Colombian, but I am Hispanic raised, and the generational trauma IS real. My abuela is from Cuba and has dementia. Every other day, she asks about someone she knew from Cuba. My dad is constantly having to tell her that she's not in Cuba anymore.

New lullaby for my girls. My eldest 1st word was mariposa and since then I've decorated their room and playroom with butterflies. My daughters are afro Latinas, I don't speak Spanish fluently so I'm glad there's an English version I can sing as I learn the Spanish. Though I'll have to change it to three as just like in the movie I was blessed with 3 beautiful, different spirited little girls 👧🏾

    Dos oruguitas enamoradas
    Pasan sus noches y madrugadas
    Llenas de hambre
Siguen andando y navegando un mundo
    Que cambia y sigue cambiando
    Navegando un mundo
    Que cambia y sigue cambiando
    Dos oruguitas paran el viento
    Mientras se abrazan con sentimiento
    Siguen creciendo, no saben cuándo
    Nuestro milagro
    Nuestro milagro
    Nuestro milagro
Ay mariposas, no se aguanten más
Hay que crecer a parte y volver
    Hacia adelante seguirás
    Ya son milagros, rompiendo crisálidas
Hay que volar, hay que encontrar
    Su propio futuro
Ay mariposas, no se aguanten más
Hay que crecer a parte y volver
    Hacia adelante seguirás

The Spanish version is a lot more original and soulful than the English version, but as a native English speaker, I’m glad that they made an English version for English speakers to enjoy. I always love to know what the lyrics are in a song because It makes it a lot more meaningful. Ay, oruguitas, don't you hold on too tight
Ay, oruguitas, não segure muito forte
Both of you know it's your time to grow, to fall apart, to reunite
Vocês dois sabem que é sua hora de crescer, desmoronar, se reunir
Wonders await you, just on the other side
Maravilhas esperam por você, do outro lado
Trust they'll be there and start to prepare the way for tomorrow
Acredite que eles estarão lá e começarão a preparar o caminho para amanhã

    Two oruguitas, cocooned and waiting
    Duas oruguitas, encasuladas e esperando
Each in their own world, anticipating
Cada um em seu próprio mundo, antecipando
    What happens after the rearranging?
O que acontece após a reorganização?
    And so afraid of change
E com tanto medo de mudar
In a world that never stops changing
Em um mundo que nunca para de mudar
So let the walls come down
    Então deixe as paredes caírem
The world will never stop changing (never stop changing)
O mundo nunca vai parar de mudar (nunca vai parar de mudar)
Never stop changing (never stop changing)
Nunca pare de mudar (nunca pare de mudar)
Ay, mariposas, don't you hold on too tight
Sim, mariposas, não segure muito forte
Both of you know it's your time to go, to fly apart, to reunite
Vocês dois sabem que é sua hora de partir, de se separar, de se reunir
Wonders surround you, just let the walls come down
Maravilhas o cercam, apenas deixe as paredes caírem
Don't look behind you, fly till you find your way toward tomorrow
Não olhe para trás, voe até encontrar o caminho para amanhã
Ay, mariposas, don't you hold on too tight

This is not a translated version. The translation of the Spanish lyrics are very different from this. Lin specially made this version. These are English lyrics made to fit the melody and to still carry the same message.

I personally love both songs and are great, english is my native language but I was surrounded and raised in a Spanish speaking home however I learned the language more when I moved to Mexico.
In my opinion for me the song hits more in Spanish, when the song begins it has a soft loving feeling because Abuela Alma and Abuelo Pedro meet but it does have a sad undertone to it, as the song continues it gets colder, sadder. It describes the two perfectly without actually saying it and many can relate to it and at the end of the Spanish song you can still feel the pressure abuela has to face for not just her children and later grandchildren but an entire community of people that are relying on her. The whole song is sad as it show the challenges abuela faced and how she wanted the perfect family. In english it does translate the song good, but I personally don’t like when the instruments in the middle of this song change to a happier tone. It’s my personal opinion.
I believe the English version was used for the credits and so people can understand the Spanish one but in their native tongue.

    Lyrics Zoom:
    Two oruguitas
    In love and yearning
    Spend every evening
    And morning learning
    To hold each other
    Their hunger burning
    To navigate a world
That turns, and never stops turning
    Together in this world
That turns, and never stops turning
    Two oruguitas
    Against the weather
    The wind grows colder
    But they're together
    They hold each other
    No way of knowing
They're all they have for shelter
And something inside them is growing
    They long to stay together
But something inside them is growing
    Ay, oruguitas
Don't you hold on too tight
    Both of you know
    It's your time to grow
    To fall apart, to reunite
    Wonders await you
    Just on the other side
    Trust they'll be there
    And start to prepare
    The way for tomorrow

You know a movie is a masterpiece when the sidecharacter you didn't sympathize with that had a screentime of maybe 10 min in total comes in and gives the movie a redefining (flashback) scene that leaves you speechless and changes the whole light you see said character in.
The song alone (especially the original) left me sobbing like a baby ngl. Together with the movie and the Story, it was something on a whole other level of emotion. Really well played Disney.

Dos Oruguitas means 2 caterpillars, it probably represents abuela and abuelo's love are like 2 caterpillars then on the night abuelo pedro made his sacrifice means it was time for abuela to grow but alone, maybe it was also why on the scene of Bruno's vision, there was only 1 butterfly representing abuela who raised her kids alone

Maybe I was interpreting the song wrong due to the events in Encanto but the song seemed to be about two lovers separated but coming together in the afterlife. It made me feel quite emotional. I finally looked up what Oruguitas meant (because I noticed it changes to Mariposas) and now I can't stop crying.

    Spanish:
    Dos oruguitas enamoradas
    Pasan sus noches y madrugadas
    Llenas de hambre
Siguen andando y navegando un mundo
    Que cambia y sigue cambiando
    Navegando un mundo
    Que cambia y sigue cambiando
    Dos oruguitas paran el viento
    Mientras se abrazan con sentimiento
    Siguen creciendo, no saben cuándo
    (Woh, oh, oh, oh)
    (Woh, oh, oh, oh)
    (Woh, oh, oh, oh)
    (Woh, oh, oh, oh, oh)
    (Woh, oh, oh, oh)
    (Woh, oh, oh, oh)
    (Woh, oh, oh, oh)
    Dos oruguitas desorientadas
    En dos capullos bien abrigadas
    Con sueños nuevos
Ya solo falta hacer lo necesario
En el mundo que sigue cambiando
    Tumbando sus paredes
    Ahí viene nuestro milagro
    Nuestro milagro
    Nuestro milagro
    Nuestro milagro
Ay mariposas, no se aguanten más
Hay que crecer a parte y volver
    Hacia adelante seguirás
    Ya son milagros, rompiendo crisálidas
Hay que volar, hay que encontrar
    Su propio futuro
Ay mariposas, no se aguanten más
Hay que crecer a parte y volver
    Hacia adelante seguirás
    Ya son milagros, rompiendo crisálidas
Hay que volar, hay que encontrar
    Su propio futuro
Ay mariposas, no se aguanten más
Hay que crecer a parte y volver
    Hacia adelante seguirás

This song made me cry right away. It made me think about my relationship with my son. I've taken care of him by myself since he was three years old. He is twenty two and possibly moving out soon. It made me think about how much pain I've sheltered him from of it just being him and I alone. Now life is calling to him like a mariposa, butterfly, and he will move on with his life. Two oruguitas is a metaphor of our life together. Great song.

Bro, i just searched the song up since I liked it, but then I started to tear up a bit since it reminded me of my dad and his brother (aka my uncle)
December is a very special month for me. Not only because of Christmas, but because me and my mom almost lost him to Covid, he's a lot better now by the way. But two (i think) years before that, we lost my uncle due to a heart attack. I never really knew much about my uncle, nor did I interact with him a lot since he lived in San Francisco, but my family of course went to his funeral. It was frightening to hear the cries and yells of mourning family relatives, and with my relationship with my uncle, and considering how young I was, I didnt feel extremely sad. But the days, or months, or even years after that? I would cry about his death, its really hard to see many family relatives be hurt or die.
Edit: last night I cried a lot while thinking of this song.

I hope that one day when it's safe to do so, and when people are able to, that Encanto is put in Disney World if it isn't already. It would be so cool to see that and they could maybe play some of the songs from the movie like this one. This movie is so beautiful story wise and has beautiful songs and beautiful complex characters to go with it.

    But they're together
    They hold each other
    No way of knowing
They're all they have for shelter
And something inside them is growing
    They long to stay together
But something inside them is growing
    Ay, oruguitas
Don't you hold on too tight
    Both of you know
    It's your time to grow
    To fall apart, to reunite
    Wonders await you
    Just on the other side
    Trust they'll be there
    And start to prepare
    The way for tomorrow
    Ay, oruguitas
Don't you hold on too tight
    Both of you know
    It's your time to grow
    To fall apart, to reunite
    Wonders await you
    Just on the other side
    Trust they'll be there
    And start to prepare
    The way for tomorrow
    (Oh, oh, oh, oh...)
    Two oruguitas
    Cocooned and waiting
    Each in their own world
    Anticipating
    What happens after:
    The rearranging
    And so afraid of change
In a world that never stops changing
So let the walls come down
The world will never stop changing
    (Never stop changing)
    (Never stop changing)
    (Never stop changing)
    Ay, mariposas
Don't you hold on too tight
    Both of you know
    It's your time to go
    To fly apart, to reunite
    Wonders surround you
Just let the walls come down
    Don't look behind you
    Fly 'til you find
    Your way toward tomorrow
    Ay, mariposas
Don't you hold on too tight
    Both of you know
    It's your time to go
    To fly apart, to reunite
    Wonders surround you
Just let the walls come down
    Don't look behind you
    Fly 'til you find
    Your way toward tomorrow
    Ay, mariposas
Don't you hold on too tight
    Both of you know
    It's your time to go
    To fly apart, to reunite
    Wonders surround you
Just let the walls come down
    Don't look behind you
    Fly 'til you find
    Your way toward tomorrow

The first time i heard this song(the english version) i really felt so much emotion the same as the spanish version so I don't need to choose between the two versions, they just both a masterpiece!

As neither English, nor Spanish are my native language, I appreciate both versions. Lin-Manuel Miranda or whoever has translated it has done the best job possible, aunque la versión latina es inégalable 🇨🇴. Abrazos desde Rumanía, del otro extremo del mundo de los idiomas romances 🇷🇴😙🌎

My mom is Mexican so I understand the other one but i have to say i do like this version very much, it keeps some words like “Mariposa” which i think is awesome.

I was driving and actually listened to the lyrics. Now here I am a grown woman balling my eyes out in a parking lot. That hit hard.

    Two oruguitas
    In love and yearning
    Spend every evening
    And morning learning
    To hold each other
    Their hunger burning
    To navigate a world
That turns, and never stops turning
    Together in this world
That turns, and never stops turning
    Two oruguitas
    Against the weather
    The wind grows colder
    But they're together
    They hold each other
    No way of knowing
