8:16 I think I understand the pattern now. In order to slide any side, preceding side must be open and only that side.
1-2 is easy. Then you close side 1 in order to open side 3.
In order to open side 4, you need to close side 2 first, and to do that you need to open side 1, then close 2 and 1.
Process for sides 5 and 6 will be just a longer version of this process then.

  • Michael S
    Michael S Day ago

To get to the next side, it seems you have to repeat all the steps you've taken up to (but not including) the previous step:
    1
    2
    1
    3
    1 2 1
    4
    1 2 1 3 1 2 1
    5
    1 2 1 3 1 2 1 4 1 2 1
    6
    Neat!

I have a small karakuri box like that! Fewer sides and a lot simpler though. It was unopened for years because my grandparents had it and couldn't solve it. I solved it in like ten minutes ;) I didn't put it back together because I was afraid I would never figure it out again XD I might use your number method...

This is literally the towers of Hanoi. Imagine 3 pegs, on the first peg is a series of 6 rings stacked on top of each other. The smallest ring is on top and the biggest is on bottom. The rules are: 1. You can only move one ring at a time. 2. You cannot place a bigger ring on top of a smaller ring. The goal is to move the entire stack to a different peg. The solution to that is the same as this box. You move ring 1 (the smallest), then 2 then 1 then 3.... etc

I've just started, but number sequence is something I'm pretty good at. I'm at 7:24. Binary is a term for the number of digits you use in a sequence. Humans have 10 in a sequence 0 to 9. After that they double up. It's called the decimal system. Binary have two in sequence, i.e. 0 and 1, or on and off. Since you start with both of them off, you can't really work the first part as a true binary system. Side one goes from off to on. Side two goes from off to on. That's all of the binary system, so to go further you have to go back to the first slide and shut it off to turn on the third, or the left character of the "tens" place. To finish off that count you have to turn off 2 and turn on 4, or the right hand part of the second level. Is this making sense? Let me do it in numbers. As binary it would look like this: 0, 1, 10, 11, 100 and so on. As the sides of the block it would look like this: 1 on, 2 on, 1 off, 3 on, 2 off, 4 on, 3 off, 5 on, 4 off, 6 on, 5 off, 1on... (there are only 6 sides) Basically you're just translating decimal to binary to hexadecimal. Old-school programmers used to have to go from binary to octal to decimal to hex to binary. Fun for a while, but oh! what a madhouse if you made an error! The report that you got was usually two feet tall and all in hexadecimal!!

I just moved on. It's not binary.

hahaha. I know that trick. at the start you were pinching the twist in the pen. then as you put the sheet over you remove your thumb and what the sheet does. is it takes the color of the pen and it drags it down all the way of the length of the sheet covering the twist. then when you rotate it. same thing happens. then when you distort it. you really just show what was really there. Now have fun trying to make sense of what I just said

When you know about computer science, it really helps a lot. It says Binary, and 32 (2^5) exact moves, and there are 6 sides. My initial guess is that it will be similar to Binary Indexed Tree / Fenwick Tree. So it will be
    1 2 1 3 1 2 1 4 1 2 1 3 1 2 1 5 1 2 1 3 1 2 1 4 1 2 1 3 1 2 1 6

There is a reason why this is called a binary puzzle. The pattern is a direct correlation to counting in binary, because each face has two positions: open and closed that can be thought in a binary fashion as 0 and 1 with 0 being closed and 1 being opened.
    The following is the pattern:
    000 001
    000 010
    000 011
    000 100
    000 101

But "binary" doesn't just mean "a sequence of numbers", it means a numbering system with only two "characters" where any number above that would need additional placeholders to be represented.... like our 0 to 9 but with only two... so I thought maybe it would be a sequence between two of the panels, with the other ones only sliding as a misdirect, and that you would have to glean from the name "binary" that only two sides were involved in the sequence... something like 1221212211121211212222111212211... with all of the other sides being made of lies. I am slightly irked by this.
