Harley maybe went too radical. Who wants to take an Harley on the track, it makes no sense. India in that respect seems to have the smartest strategy. Harley should stick to what they do best by modernising their range with greater equipment and retro modern look, angel eye. Brembo brakes. etc. as well as the possibility to remove parts of the frame a la BMW R9T so you don’t have to cut metal to make a variant of the bike you have. I like the Fat Boy and Night... rider? but would not buy one. The Sportster in my view are the only model that could bring a new breed of clients to HD, with the 500cc they are aiming too soon and too cheap. HD are not giving the Learners a real taste of Harley with that fugly 500cc. Surely they could have made a 500cc Sportster but hey the motorcycle industry is a funny one, sometimes more conventional than one might expect.

  • BonuxCouleur
    BonuxCouleur 5 months ago

As for the Harley made in India debate, it seems to be only their entry level bikes. What I don’t get is that the Harley 500cc is not only more expensive than say the Honda 500cc chopper and fugly as f$ck on top of that. I don’t see the big bores being ever built in India unless Tata or another Indian company buy them over. Royal Enfields are all built in India and they are cheap (for now) which is what you expect. It is a risky strategy for sure. I am not a big fan of Harley, love their twin, I really like the Buell naked bikes at the time these were released because apart from Yamaha and its Bulldog then MT-01, no one had fit a twin inside a street bike and to me it is still missing today. Buells and MT-01 were to naked V twins what Ducati is to naked L twins, BMW to naked flat (boxer) etc. I still think there is a place for it specially today where people my age (35-40) can afford a bike. The previous generations were more oriented towards mass bike cheap to run and maintain a la Suzuki Bandit. No one wants a Bandit nowadays. Euro manufacturers understood a bike must be of a higher quality to please that specific market hence the huge success of the Triumph Bonneville and BMW R9T. Ducati, MV Agusta, Husqvarna are all targetting this market. Never mind the comfort, it has to be reminiscent of an era where bikes were raw, physical, oozing quality but not necessarily mindless. To most of us a Bandit 1200cc would make no sense at all unless you are after the cheapest scrap metal coffin around. Personally, I already know the 750 Tenere will be out of my price range so I would really like to Suzuki releasing a brand new DR 650, Honda a new Dominator or proper off road Transalp or Kawa a new KLR. Honda has released a very nice Dakar looking 250cc the same with a least 450cc would be fantastic but it will be pricey. Even better I would like to see a revival of the Bultaco type of bikes.

I understand what you are saying and there are probably many motorcycle owners that fit your description but we can't judge or deny someone a right to own a motorcycle, knowing that they won't put it to good use. Actually it's nice to know that someone keeps loads of low mileage motorcycles laying around, sooner or later they will appear on the second hand market, so any enthusiast could snatch one of those for a fraction of the initial cost.

@1990 I mostly agree, but I doubt you can trust Polaris! The Victories were fine bikes, then they were GONE! Sad, and were i to buy a Bagger style, it would have been a Victory. The Indian is too retro, the Harley is too 'Harley' . the Victory had function with cleaned up lines. Polaris wants to make money of course, but is not 'devoted' to motorcycles. Even Harley is a more 'devoted motorcycle builder'. Imagine the market for retro V twins goes soft. what will Polaris do with Indian? Basically I resent the decision to just close a business.

Im reading getting to top hp for air cooling. Im not sure how must heat the M8 engine cooling will pull from ex valves? Some we are all sure of that. 90 hp will get you down the road. But if your standing there money in hand those other hp rateings would pull at your heart. Nice bikes . Something for everyone.

It’s because they are stuck in the past with the antiquated push rod V twin. However my Ducati with the same configuration and less displacement makes over 200hp, confirmed on the shop dyno.

@Automotive Territory: Trending News & Car Reviews You have left out the two most eagerly awaited adventure bikes:
      1. The KTM 790 Adventure R (first half 2019)
      2. Yamaha Tenere 700 (second half 2019)
Two completely new models versus upgrades and styling exercises?

@Automotive Territory: Trending News & Car Reviews The 2017 Zero S ZF 13.0. Based on specs the 2019 model has an extra 11% range. Power, torque, max speed, sustained speed, curb weight, and everything else looks the same. I have around 9,000 miles on my Zero and haven't seen an appreciable dip in the range yet so the battery seems to hold up pretty well. No maintenance issues to speak of (changed the tires and that's it).

Which Zero Motorcycle do you own and which model year is it? I'd be interesting to see how they progressed in terms of range and performance with their 2019 bike.

    • TheElectro121
      TheElectro121 7 months ago +2

Livewire ain't gonna do shit for hd. Problem isn't lack of interest in the current models, it's lack of pay to be able to afford, well... Anything. Even if the younger generation could afford a 20 thousand dollar bike, nobody wants a Harley when they are outperformed by literally everything on the road that isn't a moped. Look at the Indian 1800 cruiser vs the Harley 1800 cruiser. That's as fair of a match up as you can get but yet Indian is making 40 horsepower more with the same displacement and all the "looks/heritage" you could want. Look at their small displacement bike. The hd 500 and the rebel 500. Honda's bike is lighter, makes more horsepower and torque everywhere with less displacement, revs higher, is backed by Honda's reputation for bulletproof reliability, and looks almost fucking identical lol. Harley is dead. They just don't know it yet. Today's generation doesn't make enough to afford to buy decades old technology cause the cost of living is so high and pay so low that most can barely afford to live. And don't feed me the college bullshit either cause everyone has a diploma, so having one doesn't actually make you special anymore with the job market being so heavily saturated with them. All college does is put people in debt so they can get a useless piece of paper.

The New Harley is frankly ugly, but at least it will go around corners, which is something new for most Harley models? My personal choice of the bikes in this lineup would have to be the BMW 1259RT, although I am interested in seeing the new Katana in the flesh having an "Original" 1100 back in the day?

@Mike Skidmore ....Now that is fake news, just like [was it a pizza parlour that got blamed for this nonsense?] that pizza parlour pedo ring is and a comment column full of single digit idiots. BTW I AM a Star Trek-The Orville utopia-democratic socialist, I don't want a future like Dark Matter, Killjoys or even Firefly, where the Corporations have gotten so powerful, they ARE the government. China is like that now, following the path of Japan Inc. of the 1960s to the '80s {though now Japan has the same problem we do-an aging population not being replaced fast enough by young people} but without the scruples and quite Orwellian. I'd rather buy from Taiwan.

@RandomShart You have no Grasp RandomShart .. If Harley wants to sell bikes in India Population One Billion people they have to build the Bikes in India with really cheap Labor and really low taxes.. American made Harleys are way over prices..
Even though I might have to pay more for an American Made car with American Made steel at least that money goes to other Americans who will spend more in USA .. Just hope they don't go to Walmart where almost every thing sold at Walmart is made in China ..

    • RandomShart
      RandomShart 5 months ago

@Mike Skidmore not sure how you moved so quickly to pork sales, haha! The posts talk about HD investing overseas. Adding $2k+ import tariff per bike, in many of their key export markets, legitimises their decision to move more production outside of USA and protect future revenue growth in overseas markets. More steel mills opening is clearly a win and HD moving more production overseas is clearly a loss. That's how trade wars work, accept the wins and losses. That's WTF I'm talking about and it takes a special kind of stupid not to understand that ;-)
