Why comfort will ruin your life | Bill Eckstrom | TEDxUniversityofNevada

  • Опубликовано: 31 янв 2017
  • After documenting and researching over 50,000 coaching interactions in the workplace, Bill Eckstrom shares life-altering, personal and professional development ideas through the introduction of the “Growth Rings.” The rings illustrate how dangerous it can be to remain in a state of comfort and how being in discomfort is the only way to sustain growth. You’ll be amazed at the world-changing outcomes discomfort can have on your life and the lives of others.
Bill Eckstrom is an entrepreneur, author, speaker, outdoorsman and father of three. With a passion deeply rooted in growth and development, Bill has always been fascinated by the role a coach has on the performance of individuals and teams. As a result, he founded the EcSell Institute whose sole focus is to educate, track and measure coaching effectiveness for leaders within organizations around the world. This has led to hundreds of keynotes, published articles and e-books created from the research and documentation of coaching interactions and outcomes. You can learn more about the EcSell Institute here: www.ecsellinstitute.com/
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I disagree with the ring inbetween order and chaos being complexity. Maybe it should be called "discomfort". But the gist of what hes saying makes a lot of sense. I just dont think complexity sums up once step below chaos and one step above order. Theres more to it than that.

I love the video, but got confused about what he said in the very end (12:06): "it's not the complexity-triggering individuals or events you should fear the most, but it's your own willingness to accept or seek discomfort that will dictate the growth of not just you, but our entire world." ??? So, we have to fear the discomfort and growth that it brings? I thought he's advocating for discomfort as it brings growth. Can someone clarify, please? I also have to say that constantly being in the discomfort state is too stressful - I've been in this sate for the past 11 years and don't recommend it to anyone.

All that a person needs to do is to consume the GLORIOUS ancient wisdom writings of the East and far East - simple. Realizing one's Higher Supreme Self (Christ Consciousness; Buddha Consciousness; Krishna Consciousness; Tao Teh Ching Consciousness; or any other truly "HIGHER" states of consciousness /awareness) takes care of ALL of these concerns. Rising ABOVE the world's false understanding of "form" (physical) life is what the core of all ancient religions is about. You must DIE to yourself in THIS life in order to have and to understand TRUE life.

I clicked on this video because the title made SO much sense to me. Comfort kept me from overcoming my Social Anxiety Disorder, living independent, and just being happy in life in general. Often times I now hear the phrase, "lean into discomfort." Probably the most difficult to face, but meaningful and powerful advice I've gotten.

Kind of a clickbaity title, considering that the point of the video was that comfort stops growth. Growth has no relation with whether or not someone's life is ruined, so technically the title doesn't relate to the video.

People who have avoided discomfort their whole life (not taking arguments etc), MAY feel insecure about themselves all time around strangers.

A few years ago, I was searching for a job. Exposed myself to many job interviews and contacted managers. At first, I felt discomfort every time. I was nervous and looked up to these people at the job interviews, thinking they were more competent and better than me. Nowadays, I can be comfortable meeting the same people. seeing through their fasade of fancy job titles and acting of professionalism.

I now feel very confident and relaxed a lot more!

The reason that I had to go on a job hunt, was that my current job was changing for the worse.

Also. Life isnt about devoting your life to a job. Its about enjoying your spare time on the trip to the coffin.

I wonder if he's wearing barbed-wire underpants whilst presenting. And wearing them backwards to create more complexity when needing a pee. I used to be with a girlfriend who had this guy's 'no pain, no gain' philosophy, so we spent two-thirds of our time in 'uncomfortable' conversations addressing our 'challenges' and the rest of the time we were just miserable, tired and pissed off. In the end I left her for someone who is loads more fun. It was an uncomfortable decision for me to leave but thankfully my Ex's 'training' really helped me make it ;)

Divorce, financial ruin, betrayal, disappointment, and all the rest are needed free lessons to grow your awareness and conscience to become truly you. Anything materialistic, rational and emotional will never last. They all pass. Rightness and Righteousness are totally different meaning. The richest will have to die, and so will the poorest. How you live each day is the most precious reality. You don't need to live to influence the world. You live to be peaceful and self-determined. The world goes on without us, while you cannot go on without your inner fulfilment each day. Right?

True that change can be good but it's bad to think that all change just for the sake of change equals growth because it could also been seen as shrinking or dieing (not complete death but partial). This concept uncontrolled leads to ideas like the far left(Democrats) which isn't good(it's not good to go to far either way).
Btw u can change through comfort.

I realized I was struggling with depression when I almost got into a fight with a drunk bro who was 4in shorter than me and I thought I had to teach him a lesson. I was at a point where I was engaging in reckless and risky behaviors just to feel something good. I decided that month to move to a new state on my own and just learn a new craft. I started working before I even got a bed to sleep on and lived check to check. It wasn't easy but I definitely found something inside of myself that I thought I lost. Now things are much better for me and I am thankful I went out on my own and lived in discomfort. I can personally attest to how harmful comfort can be when you are immersed in it for years.

Success in the face of adversity on the physical and emotional arenas . Having a goal other than making money . Finding contentment and happiness in a mundane unchallenging job. that is the goal . Resisting the urge to challenge yourself. daring yourself to remain as you are . preaching the simple life . Finding a partner who shares your mediocrity and is happy as is .
People are unhappy on account of all those TED Talks urging you to leap into the unknown . it frightens them , and makes them miserable.
He never mentions why he was fired from his first job ? Perhaps he needed a good shaking up after such poor performance that led to his being sacked .
Why should someone who is competent and successful in his low paid, low powered job be made to feel a failure ?
If life is slow and predictable and safe and we need 'action' , there are always novels and movies that provide us with all the excitement we crave ( in the safety of our own homes ).

A life without challenges is boring. You will have a story to tell only if you move out of your comfort zone. But why do you have to move out of your CZ? we as human tend to stay within the comfort zone. it will only happen if your desires to succeed are way greater than your fears to fail.

This guy is completely wrong. He took his specific situation about his job and generalized it to be the only way to find growth. Comfort is what allows for clear thinking and concentration which is important for problem solving. Why was Ancient Greece a pioneering place where many innovations happened? Because for the first time there was an economic system in place that allowed for the rise of a scholar class: people had financial comfort and thus could afford education. Their lives were secure so they could focus on abstract things. If you are constantly thrown into situations of crisis you have no choice on what to work on. By having comfort, productive people are able to find some of the most groundbreaking discoveries. There is not just one way to do something.

Pessimistic view: Life is all about struggle, unless you are born rich or privileged you are destined to struggle.
Optimistic view: No pain no gain, hardships pays off and its always sweeter when you earn it.
Life is short, everyone tries to maximize gains they can enjoy before they die. Some need not struggle, most have to and some choose to give up on life. To how i see, all is the same, you give your own meaning to your own life, be it living it or ending it. We are just part of this endless cycle in the flow of time.
