Why comfort will ruin your life | Bill Eckstrom | TEDxUniversityofNevada

  • Published on Jan 31, 2017
  • After documenting and researching over 50,000 coaching interactions in the workplace, Bill Eckstrom shares life-altering, personal and professional development ideas through the introduction of the “Growth Rings.” The rings illustrate how dangerous it can be to remain in a state of comfort and how being in discomfort is the only way to sustain growth. You’ll be amazed at the world-changing outcomes discomfort can have on your life and the lives of others.
Bill Eckstrom is an entrepreneur, author, speaker, outdoorsman and father of three. With a passion deeply rooted in growth and development, Bill has always been fascinated by the role a coach has on the performance of individuals and teams. As a result, he founded the EcSell Institute whose sole focus is to educate, track and measure coaching effectiveness for leaders within organizations around the world. This has led to hundreds of keynotes, published articles and e-books created from the research and documentation of coaching interactions and outcomes. You can learn more about the EcSell Institute here: www.ecsellinstitute.com/

Growth rings? Oh you mean like the concentric rings on a tree that show times of plenty and scarcity but taken together show the iterative growth of even the most mighty redwood or oak? No, I mean 4 things that I am calling rings for some unknown reason.

You can change your order of thought and action without the catalyst of a discomforting experience, though typically we wait until one to do so.

Typically the kind of "insight" you get when you think too much. It is not about (dis)comfort, it is about how naturally you live. Growth is a natural proces that happens when there is accordance with the natural environment. It has nothing to do with discomfort. He is clearly mistaking growth for change. He did't grow, he just changed.

Well, this idea of discomfort inducing growth in a person was said 1400 years ago by Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him) when he said that If Allah intends good for someone, then he afflicts him with trials. (Sahih Bukhari). It's amazing that what people discover now was already informed 1400 years ago.

I remember my fathers frustration at me for being stubborn and not listening to his advice, but every generation has to make their own mistakes and learn the hard lessons which only pain and discomfort can teach!! So true what this presentation says about pain and learning, only through mistakes and necessity do we learn the valuable lessons of life. You appreciate success more if you have to struggle for it!!!

Entire lecture based on the false assumption that growth only occours whem you are disconfortable. Clearely growth can happen in a confortable enviroment as long as you have others stimuli. Disconfort is just one of them, and is the one i would less recomend for obvious reasons.

Basically a simple validation of what Bill is sharing with us here. And yes, it may seem counterintuitive with our cultural conditionings, but once we learn this lesson experientially, we might then embody a new found "Wisdom" and purpose in life. 🙏. Thank you Bill, In Lak' ech
