RTX 2060 FE Tear-Down: They Added More Glue and Screws

  • The NVIDIA RTX 2060 Founders Edition is more difficult to open than even the previous RTX FE cards, now adding more glue to the process.

Our review is available separately: ru-clip.com/video/b4Kfrc3kk_c/video.html
The RTX 2060 is a significantly more competitive RTX offering than previous RTX cards, but still faces the same challenges in assembly for the Founders Edition model. There are still a lot of screws, there's still glue, but now it's more difficult to get the cooler off, thus making it more difficult to replace the thermal paste on the RTX 2060. Servicing the RTX 2060 Founders Edition model will be difficult.

Hey Steve@GamersNexus, with it being as close as it is to the RTX2070, do you think you could possibly fit an EK RTX2070 waterblock to this card? Looking to do an open loop, but don't want to spend RTX2070 prices just to do it. This is purely aesthetics, but not for my Ryzen 7 I'd be pairing it with. Your thoughts?

Steve I have a question, Why are everyone comparing this very product with Apple products and seem to condemn all NVIDIA products based on this solely item? It is starting to become annoying, I hope you will make a video about this. People modify products like this to run with water cooling and all as well. Or is it just pure envy from poor people who think Apple products are better because trendy rich people use it?

As convoluted as this thing is, would I be right in saying that if you just needed to replace a fan, separating the cooler from the card is not actually required? It seems that if you free the shroud, rotate it 90deg, you can get at the fans. The only chore would be removing the "RTX2060" plate in order to get at the fans' third screw, and their connection to that little circuit board in the middle. Do I have that right?

Nvidia is taking the Apple business model applying it to video cards. For every extra screw they use that's another $10 they add to the cost. Because everybody knows the more screws used makes it a better products. Or just shows how much your getting screwed.

Why the ball sack would you need so many screws and what the fuck is glue doing inside a GPU?! I was quite found of the 8 or 9 screws my PowerColor RX580 had, and my current Gainward 2080 Phantom also isn't so hard to teardown, I belief NVIDIA is trying to set the record for the most complicated card assembly, lucky for them no other company is competing, in this branch.

I don't know if it's some kind of secret knowledge, but most hot glues, if you pour bit of IPA on them and let it sit for a moment, they become kind of brittle and let go of what they are holding.

Surely, you know exactly why they are doing this. It's specifically created so that it makes individual repair and maintenance of the card significantly more difficult to encourage people to buy a brand new card rather than fixing their perfectly good existing one.
At this point, I'm just curious if you just somehow don't realize that this is the case....or, if you are specifically paid not to say things like this out loud.

Using one way to build cards (from 2080 -> 2060) means you need less installations, instructions, people, materials, etc. If you have set up the 2080 construction line, it is more cost effective to stream in the 2060, instead of opting for a completely different and separate solution. You must try and reuse as many machines, people and knowledge as possible. This also means you have less time overhead and you can reuse the same quality tests down the line. I think it makes perfectly sense to look at ROI for already in place machinery, when you have a running industry and don't want to start over from scratch.

This is hard to watch. Use your eyes. There looks to be a wire-strain relief screwed on over the connector of the wire you're trying to access... 2 screws... It looks like you can see it at around 12:00 -- There is enough wire to flip it over either by rotating on its side, or by flipping it 180 over itself - that's typically how it is designed so it can come apart.
Edit: He finally sees it... But we had a saying in the military.. never with force... This pertained to disassembling weapons - if it doesn't move in a certain way, it isn't meant to - don't force it... The same is true for a lot of these other designs....

Now I hear about the glue - they shouldn't have done that - it should've been made to be easily disassembled...

Edit: It is a strain relief, not solely for cable management. If you were to rotate it over without that plate, then you could break the connector. Because it was there, with all of your yanking and tugging and fussing, it prevented it from breaking - however they may have glued it because it is a review sample or knew what you were going to do so they added it in case you were going to take it apart without looking, which you did, to prevent damage in case you spotted the strain relief, you didn't, and broke the connector, which you couldn't because of their glue.
Edit: If they are that new to fan structure building it could simply be them avoiding patents...

They've been making these cards for like these 10 years with almost identical designs literally no reason to start using less convenient screws and gluing them together other then planed obsolescence and discouraging you from doing preventive maintenance on the card as performance gains with revisions are starting to slow down.
