CycleCruza I'm going to build the perfect dual sport it's never been done before. I have the engine allready. I have a drz. But this motor is going into a wr250r or honda 250l chasis. Its a 330cc twostroke powervalve. 6 speed with counterbalancer and wide ratio transmission. Liquid cooled. Its like 50hp but smoother than a ktm300 or beta300 its a enduro motor. Get ahold of me cycle crusier im going to try to figure out your email. Tellin ya your going to want to ride with me and test thesse machines of mine. And talk dual sports.

i know this video is old but... why not just buy a Aprilla Pegaso? theyre light weight adventure bikes.... fully road legal and can go anywhere.

  • dozu888

this seems to be a natural progression of many sensible riders.... high speed on a straight line is pointless. the fun is really on the dirt, hence a dual sport... I still have my '06 ninja 250 and a '98 DR350 and that's enough to cover all my riding needs... but I am also getting into custom builds - chopping up old bikes into bobbers and cafes etc...

What prevents many large manufacturers from making 2-stroke "big" bikes I think is emission regulations on motorcycles in many countries. In Sweden we have a category called "amateur built" which means if I build the frame myself I can use whatever engine I want and only have to think about noise level and power/weight ratio. So I have on old CR250 that I'm planing to build a small and light "cafe racer" out off.

I just thought about this very thing this morning on the shitter. Best thoughts happen that way. I would thinking more litter bike. The first thing I thought of was Rotax for the motor. Used on can-am spiders, off-road bikes(they do two strokes as well), planes, skidoos, and snow mobiles. Fun fact, the guys who run redline motorcycles used to run a used motorcycle store. I still ride the bike I bought from them. They closed the doors on that shop when the owner found out that people wanted custom dirt bikes.

Doing a 250 2-stroke super moto seems by far the easiest and least expensive way to get the kind of power you want in a sub-250 lb bike. You need wheels, possibly some suspension mods, the best brakes you can find and then whatever it takes to make it street legal. Whether you can title a 2-stroke varies state to state so just do some quick research to find out if it's feasible. You might have better luck plating it as a dirt bike intended for sporadic street riding from one trail head to another. Then once you have that taken care of you go ahead and do the super moto conversion (unless you make the mistake of taking it to the track first because then you might just decide to keep it a motocrosser and scrap the super moto idea all together). The YZ250 seems to have the most aftermarket support of any bike. You can swap wide-ratio 3rd, 4th, and 5th gears into the transmission, which will make it far more street rideable.

...appreciate the enthusiasm, not so much the constant language or riding in areas that ultimately give Dual Sport riders a bad reputation... I gave thumbs up anyway! Being a Dual Sport rider since I was 18 (I'm 60 now) and having ridden some of the wildest pre-production and concept Dual Sports wheels ever conceived (I was a factory suspension developer back when...). I can personally attest to the concept of what amounts to a SuperMoto with wide semi-off road rubber, lots of power and very light weight to be Very attractive... I did find with some of the concepts that I road that fit this, were in fact trouble waiting to happen in some sense... So much power to weight ratio like nothing else... In the end I chose something with a broad powerband (engine mods to get there), 12" travel front and rear, weighing in around 300lbs + wet... With the right rubber choice I've had nearly constant riding satisfaction (brute acceleration on demand, excellent handling, light weight, as good brakes as can be had on such a rig anyway)... You get the picture...

I wouldn't "build it" from the "ground up". I wouldn't totally go with the "mod it beyond belief" approach. That's my personal style of doing things tho. Get yourself a very versatile bike such as the sv650 (if you like L-twims) or interceptor (L4) or an old 600 (inline 4) and stop every possible thing you can. Hell you can even swap suspension with the sv650 and put dual sport tires on it since you like the street fighter/tracker/dual sport scene. That seems to be the best thing in my eyes for you anyways. But I wanna here what you think of that. I wanna hear you say what you'd like and why and then make a plan on achieving this new dream dude. Anyways I'll be keeping a closer eye on your videos now for hearing more about this

I think it's a good idea to build a custom bike, but I would treat it as a learning experience rather than going straight for the perfect concept bike idea, i.e. build 'a bike' first, and think about the 'perfect' bike later. It takes serious skills to build a custom. If this custom bike has to be your ideal, I would get professionals involved in the design and construction. Not for everything, but for the important parts.
