So what are tournament rules? Is there a banlist of cards you aren't allowed to play?

Im a little knew to TCG (or at least true TCG play I used to play it with friends and we didn't know the rules so in other words it was a stupid version of the game) but now that Im learning the rules and stuff. Wouldn't 75 min. be enough even with all the staking he is doing.

I don’t understand all the people saying he was stacking his deck? The opponent gets to shuffle/cut it? Also it didn’t seem like he was taking that long considering he was being talked to and it was a crucial turn. Seems like the Pokémon card game is pretty bad at the competitive level. To be fair to Henry he seems like a great guy and played very well. Congrats to him.

Horrific judgement, that was not slow playing. Clearly these judges have never been to locals.
Edit: upon further review it appears he might have been cheating. So while I still think that was a very aggressive slow play call, since it was apart of an apparent pattern I understand it now.

they really should just add official timers in view of the players for next year instead of relying on a judges determination on whether or not someone is taking too long. when it comes to card games or competitive games in general competitors need time to THINK, CONCENTRATE, and make the most optimal plays possible to win. I would absolutely hate having to think ontop of all that on whether or not this judge.... who has no attachment to the match at hand other than making sure i play my cards according to rules .... is going to call time on me ...

I’m just getting back into Pokémon tcg can someone explain what exactly Shintaro did to lose the first game in layman’s terms? Like what do they mean he took to long to promote a Pokémon?

    • Benthere donethat
      Benthere donethat 6 months ago

After his defending pokemon was defeated, he had to decide which pokemon to promote from his bench. Which one he chose could have decided the game depending on his hand and the card he draws. However this was cut short by the judges deciding he took too long to promote a new pokemon, and in combination with penalties and warnings in previous rounds the judges decided to deliver a 2 prize card penalty. This gave the game to Henry as he only needed to win 2 more prize cards to win that game.

  • Zach Shipley
    Zach Shipley 7 months ago

I think while the penalty was harsh the rulebook backing it seemed appropriate if Shintaro was in fact given warnings in previous games. I think people are going over the top about it by calling the judge racist for ruling it that way. I also think if you're calling for Henry to not really be considered the champion or that the judge won him the tournament you're just being very sore about things you don't know for sure. Most players would have used giant hearth to thin the deck before using draw power to try and find the welder so there's no guarantee Shintaro would have gotten it. And had he not there was a very strong chance that he would just lose the game next turn. On top of that Henry won game 2 soundly so it isn't even like Shintaro had a win under his belt and everything was decided by a game 3. Is there a chance Shintaro could have won? Absolutely. But there's a fair chance he would have lost as well. So I think if anything it's fine to wonder how it would have played out differently but don't go assuming Henry wouldn't have won. And for those calling out the fact they didn't keep the last bits where Shintaro was crying in the video, of course they didn't. Why the heck do you need to see Shintaro cry? To be able to justify how upset you are with the judge? The guy lost in the finals and obviously that hits hard but that's for him to deal with and pick himself up and for fans of his to support him anyway not some spectacle for people on youtube.

What a travesty to have such a rule that you move to slow at the judge's discretion. This doesnt feel good from either side. Both players get robbed of a natural victory. Shame.

    • Mr Knarf
Mr Knarf 5 months ago +4

@King Lewy But that's MTGO: in paper Mtg there are warnings which may lead to a Game Loss for Slow Play. But those are only used during the timed parts of competitive events to prevent people from exploiting the clock, during finals there is no clock. He took a minute and a half (15:37 - 17:03) to make a game changing decision. That may seem like much, and as a judge I'd have encouraged him to play faster, but I wouldn't have enforced the penalty at such a high REL: it gives the game a bad reputation and makes it all seem pointless and less exciting for viewers and players alike. It's not like it took him five minutes either. Sure, he had already received a warning, and rules must be applied, but this may set a good precedent to change some of those rules.

    • King Lewy
King Lewy 5 months ago +2

use to play magic, never played pokemon tcg beyond that one gba color game. that rule seems pretty wack tho. especially in a final what a frustrating way to lose a match. in mtgo each player starts w 25 min? and if a player uses up their 25 min then they lose.
