10 out of 10 for effort, but minus several million for content.

I think he's in a loop of sorts. He said, ' I'll never get home'. I think each parallel guy wakes up and finds himself on the ship, wearing the jumpsuit and finds the book. He searches for his own universe, but not finding it, basically hijacks his parallel, switches places with him and takes up his life. Actually quite brilliant.

The problem with parallel universes is that we cannot handle the subject. They complicate things to a (too) high degree. Certainly if the cross-over happens to a world almost (or wholly?) identical. Meetings with oneself, finding your wife in bed with whom she says is her husband of ten years, and who the hell are you??
The phenomenon may exist, but makes no sense.
I once realized that an old photo was like a time machine device. A moving picture is that even more, those images of the past are fuller and more detailed and more complete. The movements create an illusion of reality. Virtual Reality in 3D comes even closer to reality.
As people say, a time machine does not and cannot exist. The paradoxes, etc. We better hope it stays that way, it would drive us insane.
Yet I cannot look at an old photo from the family album without thinking: 'This has happened, I was there, I was that age, and from that very moment on my life developed further.' But what I see in that frozen time slice no longer exists. How real are memories?
It got me quite confused for a time.
The parallel world as shown in this short, is not interesting, and that's not Nahlinder's fault. Too close to home base. What about universes that are in a more advanced parallel state? Who show you your 'own' universe but billions of years younger, or older (don't tell me that all parallel verses have their time synchronized)? Homo sapiens's evolution accelerated by (aliens, whatever), or drastically slowed down and even regressed? Where physical laws seem to have mutated too and basic round is basic square?
Personally I think that when you pass through a space gate - if they exist - you become part of the other universe, you'll have no memory of the one you just left. Perhaps because all the innumerable realms are part of 1 big one. It would make sense to me that parallel worlds have no time/space borders. Where ever you are it's always the same 'familiar' one. And if they would differ drastically, you wouldn't be aware of being and seeing 'differences'. What we expect. Something new, something amazing.
It's a bit like reincarnation. All those people saying that they remember having in another life been Cleopatra or Napoleon, they fantasize. A human being does not remember his birth nor his death. Reincarnation, if it existed, would work that way too I guess. Not remembering your birth is mainly because your infant brain wasn't developed enough yet to store such information. Nature's safety valve, also.
Maybe I'll return to this topic in a hundred billion years from now, when we understand these things better...it's far too early.
As far as this short concerns: no harm in wildly fantasizing, but it's not worked out enough. His space pod leaves without him. Did he program an automatic launch? He finds himself in the street, dead. And that's all? He takes his own place? But the lights going on upstairs suggest there's more to it. I just can't tie it to what I saw before.

This film is open to too many interpretations.

The story is a simple one but it isn't trying to be anything more. It was well done for the creator's experience and budget. But, again, it isn't trying to be bigger than it is. So, well done and keep it up! If you want to see the opposite of this (a short film that tries to be much bigger than what it actually delivers) watch Umbra from Turtle Moon Films.

I liked it. And it's not that hard to understand. Don't mind the trolls and the haters. The only thing i didn't like is it's WAAAAAY too dark (picture wise, not story wise). You could have a bit more light in the ship and still get the "in the dark with only the monitor's glow as lighting" effect. i'd be interested to see more of that story line.

Excellent short film that's long on exploration of idea without the overscripting that insults the intelligence of an audience . Its spareness captures the solitary experience of space and one's inner world/s. The void theme comes across as a silent scream upon realizing we don't know who we are other than explorers trying to find ourselves and the way home. In this piece, the answer seems to be we can't, that when we find "home," we're still lost and feel like mere occupants and pretenders. The "we can never go home, again" concept in Void not only explores existential identity and the parallel worlds paradox, it also suggests a time and perception conundrum: are home and we real and enduring or a function of fungible memory and mystery consciousness, as the "now" of nano-seconds keeps refreshing anew? Nice touch about the gas tank going empty and the rocketman finding himself dead.
Who, how many, where, and when are we, indeed. And, given extra-dimensional lives, do we ever really die? Bravo, Ethan Nahlinder!

I get the point. But I think you have to ditch the 1950s production values and hire (or kidnap) an actor. There is a difference between being plausible and being believable. It doesn't have to be plausible but it has to be believable. It's neither. And that is not a comment on the plot.

watched it twice just to see if i missed something.. I didn't.. Very long build up to a less than climatic ending. the pilot obviously should have read the book on parallel dimensions a little better.. or brought extra gas. Very week plot with zero character and story development. Keep trying.. this one is a double thumbs down for me.. ok.. one half thumb up for the visual effects. Not too bad for a high school production.

I can't say this was totally bad, but it was lacking story wise, I get that the main character is traveling to parallel earths and seeing different avenues his life could have taken, but it felt pointless ultimately, I feel like the film was far too short to set up the story it was trying to convey.

Pretty good film, but I gotta comment on the sexual imagery of the passage between the two parallel universes. First that "hole in space" looked remarkably like a vagina, while the space ship that penetrated it had a very "penis-like" appearance. I'm a little surprised that the parallel universe didn't cry out to be penetrated again and again, harder and harder!
