    ________
[00:00:02] Narrator: After months of planning and countless hours dreaming of it. Construction is now underway on Zach's custom Golden Eagle Log and Timber home.
[00:00:12] Zach: It's a very exciting time in the process. You start to see a lot of movement quickly. It's just ah, it's an overwhelming sense of excitement. It's hard to stop thinking about it.
[00:00:23] Narrator: It's day one. And the excavator has arrived on site. And the crew begins digging into the soft sandy soil.
[00:00:31] Zach: We have made a lot of progress out here. First of all, we cleared off the topsoil. The Topsail has a lot of rich nutrients in there, a lot of organic matter. So we piled that over here to the side. That is what we'll put down before we ever put the lawn in in the future. It's also important to keep in mind that if I were building in the summertime. The water would naturally drain into the sand. It's very sandy around here. But it's gonna be a winter build. And with it being a winter build the ground will freeze. So we want to make sure to grade everything away from the house so we don't get big puddles out by the construction site. What you can see is we've dug for a nine foot basement here. And it all looks really good. And tomorrow we'll be doing the footings.
[00:01:10] Narrator: Before the footings can be poured. The crew stakes in the perimeter of the foundation and all of the load-bearing walls. Footings are poured pads that distribute the weight of the walls above it. And they prevent the home from sinking or shifting into the ground.
[00:01:39] Narrator: The aluminum forms where the concrete will be poured are now built on top of the footings. The forms will be removed once the concrete cures. They also frame in the large egress windows. Next the forms are filled with concrete. And the foundation walls are now complete.
[00:02:05] Zach: When a lot of us think of basements. We often think of utilities as well as areas for storage. But in today's homes. We're able to incorporate a lot of natural light. That allows us to finish off this space and make it feel like a continuation of the rest of the home.
[00:02:19] Narrator: With the forms now removed. The crew back fills the exterior using the dirt they used when they first dug out the foundation. Now they're ready for the next phase of construction.
[00:02:30] Zach: Today we're working on one of my favorite features the home and that is the in-floor heat. We are laying all the tubing in the floor here in the basement. And eventually there will be tubing in the garage also. All this will run off the same boiler. So once it's all covered up you won't be able to see it. But you'll definitely able to feel it. It was really cool to see how they laid it all out. Everything is intentional, it has a reason. There's not going to be a cold spot in that floor.
[00:02:55] Narrator: Meanwhile back at Golden Eagle Log and Timber Homes headquarters. Shipment number one is already being prepared for delivery. While some companies send the entire house in one shipment. Builders prefer Golden Eagle's staggered shipping system. That only send the materials needed in each phase of construction. This process doesn't overwhelm the job site. Or exposed finished materials to the elements outside for months on end.

Zach’s foundation is sealed with Karnak. It is waterproofed with a gray sealer. If you look at the exterior closely, you can see that there is a slight color change. The drain tile is built right into the forms for the footings.

no water proofing on outside of concrete basement walls? in sandy soil? Just curious, seems a major omission. Also no drainage on exterior of basement walls, or on the interior side of basement walls. (at least no mention of any)

A beautiful, top quality, modest home. Not one of the giant energy gulping homes so common today. Although I must admit my 3900sqft home for just me is a bit much. Where is this? That soil is strange to me - like you're building on a beach or something. In VA, once you get off the immediate coast. Our soil is hard as a rock (and as you go west you're on rocky-hilly-mountain country. I'm certainly not doubting you, but on the vid, it didn't even look like you laid the footers on solid ground. +Batman I know how you feel, I myself am looking into tiny homes and minimalist living but some days i do dream of a big fancy house if i could afford it, although I personally would rather use brick for the walls because they last wayyyyy longer. By the way if people use sustainable methods for building houses like this it won't cause stress on the environment. If you planted 3 trees for every tree cut down for this building then you would actually be helping the environment and generating more habitats for animals then you would be taking away by building there.

    • Batman

Golden Eagle Log and Timber Homes
wow that is actually very impressive and it’s a great thing you guys do that.
The main thing I meant was the fact is that this guy (along with many other wealthy Americans) build unnecessarily large houses which take a large amount of other resources such as concrete and insulation. Not to mention the fact that this home most likely required a large amount of deforestation just to clear an area for the house to be built. This disrupts animals’ natural habitats.
I know this is just how life is today and often times human needs and well being are put above those of animals and one house like this doesn’t seem like it could affect too much. However, I just feel like we should maybe stop putting so much stress on nature as we have been for the past couple hundred years. Of course we need a place to live but that could just be in a small house. No extra space is necessary.
This is just my opinion though; I know most feel differently

Hold on. You shouldnt pile top soil that high. In school I have learned that the "the organic matter" dies when you pile to high, because the high pressure compacts the material. Here in Germany you only allowed to pile it up to 2 meters.

    • Golden Eagle Log and Timber Homes
Golden Eagle Log and Timber Homes  11 дней назад +1

Interesting! Makes sense. But it's just temporarily piled there, and even if the organic matter dies, it is still nutrient-rich soil. Plus fresh black top soil was delivered once the lawn was put in.

What did they or you use to treat the outside of the basement wall with to prevent moisture bleed through? The apartment complex where I live, the entire length of the building in the garage has this nasty mold and mineral deposits bubbling out the paint. It's truly a sight. It was cleaned off once and coated but that failed in less than a few years. The only way to have prevented this was to put a membrane on the outside wall. Was a membrane used in this build?

I like the new building structural designs where they use insulating foam basically building blocks I believe there called ICF and pour concrete in the center so you get insulation on the outside of the home, concrete walls instead of wood and then another layer of insulation inside the home. It doesn’t matter how bad a storm is your home will never fall. Basically like living in a luxury above ground bunker.

I would have the built the basement area in ICF, which is fantastic product. I built my three storey house in ICF, in PB, FL. I would also waterproof the outer wall.

At 6:01 the contractor installs osb sheer wall sheeting with 4 corners meeting. Is that to code? I don't think so. It's certainly not best practice. Osb on sheer walls should be staggered. I only mention it because I find it hilarious that the guy editing the video didn't edit that out.

+Golden Eagle Log and Timber Homes Ya, after looking at the final product and reading your comment I'm even more convinced that my initial impression was wrong. After 35 years of construction myself, I'm really not okay with leaving the comment. Nobody deserves to have their their work critiqued incorrectly. In this instance it's really the camera guy's fault. But I'm not a camera guy so I'm not qualified to speak to it. Also, it's a beautiful home.

He is right, there is a corner right there. The camera angle throws you off. What a nice conversation. Thanks for discussing this! You guys can leave the comment. All is good! You can see if finished in the final episode at the 22:49 mark. ru-clip.com/video/kcurwoz3aku/видео.html?t=1369

+Ron Taylor Really? You could be right. While it doesn't really look like that to me, it very well could be exactly as you described. Given that fact I'll take this post down in a little bit. I'll leave it long enough for you to get this comment though. Even though I can't tell from the video for sure, I wouldn't want to make a statement that I can't be positive about. Thanks for letting me know.

Nice try Joseph but that's not a continuous wall. That's where a different angled wall starts.

I need to know how your drainage system works.. Do you have a septic tank?

    • Golden Eagle Log and Timber Homes
Golden Eagle Log and Timber Homes  24 дня назад +1

There is a septic tank and a drain field. It's best for you to search for that on RU-clip. It's always going to depend on soil conditions. There will be a test run, called a perc test, which determines the water absorption rate of soil. The results of that test will tell you the available options.
