Mathematics and sex | Clio Cresswell | TEDxSydney

Mathematics and sex are deeply intertwined. From using mathematics to reveal patterns in our sex lives, to using sex to prime our brain for certain types of problems, to understanding them both in terms of the evolutionary roots of our brain, Dr Clio Cresswell shares her insight into it all.
Dr Clio Cresswell is a Senior Lecturer in Mathematics at The University of Sydney researching the evolution of mathematical thought and the role of mathematics in society. Born in England, she spent part of her childhood on a Greek island, and was then schooled in the south of France where she studied Visual Art. At eighteen she simultaneously discovered the joys of Australia and mathematics, following on to win the University Medal and complete a PhD in mathematics at The University of New South Wales. Communicating mathematics is her field and passion. Clio has appeared on panel shows commenting, debating and interviewing; authored book reviews and opinion pieces; joined breakfast radio teams and current affair programs; always there highlighting the mathematical element to our lives. She is author of Mathematics and Sex.
TEDxSydney is an independently organised event licensed from TED by longtime TEDster, Remo Giuffré (REMO General Store) and organised by his General Thinking network of fellow thinkers and other long time collaborators.
TEDxSydney has become the leading platform and pipeline for the propagation of Australian ideas, creativity, innovation and culture to the rest of the world.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Mathematics appeared everywhere 2000 years ago? What about the Ishango Bone? 20.000 BCE it has been found, it seems that it is Mathematics... or the Moscow Papyrus something like 2000 BCE, more than 4000 years ago? Mathematics seem to originate from Africa doesn't it?

I'm sorry girl, but the skewed numbers aren't because men stretch the truth about the number of partners they've had out of pride. It's because women outright lie about the true number of penises that they have allowed inside them out of shame.
    And that's a damned shame.

Mathematics aren't basically pattern-recognition; applied maths are largely so.
Mathematics, as she almost said later, are about the precise definitions of entities and the relations between them (like syntax), e.g. 'These are integers, this is addition defined for integers, this is how it's related to multiplication defined for integers, what is a "prime number"; what other statements can we deduce about prime numbers based on these?'.
She's talking more about mathematical modelling---but you can create a mathematical model which is a perfectly valid bit of mathematics but whose relationship to what's being modelled might as well be 'Colourless, green, ideas sleep furiously.'.

In experimental psychology experiments, statistics is a more powerful tool than pure mathematical equations. Explaining 20% of variance in human behavior is an achievement in an experiment, let alone explaining it with 100% certainty.

Very good talk but I want to add a word of caution. If mathematics is so pure and unambiguous, why is it being used to create the lie of climate change? In fact, like Cresswell says, it is a form of language that in essence is exact in outcome of yes or no or zero or one but that has nothing to do with what it tries to describe. Each formula that tries to model a natural phenomenon is at best probably approximately correct. Some formulae can in the very small i.e. quantum physics predict results with surprising accuracy, but no one will be able to model a chaotic complex adaptive system absolutely accurately especially over longer periods of time. Just like with a two arm pendulum the movements and progression are completely unpredictable. Therefore it is utterly wrong to say that mathematics provide unifying and unambiguous proof. Testing the mathematical predictions against reality is proof and even that is not achievable with complex natural and biological systems.
