The interesting story of our educational system | Adhitya Iyer | TEDxCRCE

  • Published on Aug 17, 2016
  • A story surrounding more than a million students in India built around a booming IT industry, a machine like education system, a race to a seat amongst the top engineering colleges and student suicides in our system. The Indian education system in all its complexity has turned out to be one of the most fascinating educational stories in the world. Watch Adhitya Iyer in his talk share his travel around the country discovering the truth behind the common engineer in India.
Adhitya Iyer completed his engineering degree from Mumbai University, where he studied in an institute interestingly named after Sardar Patel and was inaugurated by Nehru. He was listed as one of India's Top 30 student entrepreneurs by the NEN. He later spent 2 years in Bangalore selling chai, before he set out to write a non-fiction on the complex life of India's engineers is Kickstarter funded and is India's highest crowdfunded book. He thinks the society needs to be re-imagined and that humans can't be spending more than half their life doing something they seldom enjoy.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at

When i was a student of grade 5, i thought i had enough education then i asked them to give me job but instead of giving me job they forced me to graduate. Now i realized, Actually there was and there is no sufficient job so they are creating one by making me students. Keep study! until you have no job. It is happening in every sector.

What he is saying maybe true. Yeah, But we are helpless and I think there is no other way out of this madness we all should just accept with what we have and what we get. Just a sad truth.

Well, he's talking as if India makes ONLY engineers. Not true at all. Many kids in India DO find their calling. There's peer pressure and the pressure to perform only for those who take it too seriously. People are actually discovering other courses now. People are actually willing to send their kids to courses other than engineering or medicine. People are gradually but surely learning that one's calling lies where one's heart is. So I don't quite see what the fuss is all about. And no, IITs are certainly not the only institutions that offer quality education. They source their students from the schools, see?
I personally wanted my own kid to pursue a course in dramatics. That was because that was what SHE wanted to pursue. And I want all other kids in the country and the world to get the kind of education that THEY are interested in - not the one that their parents or friends recommend. That is what we believe in at Khandekar's Academy, Vadodara.

Good content, Appreciated. But Mr. Adhitya, a South Indian who has added his caste name to his name which we generally don't do, 06:08 pl beware that for that matter we don't have any national language. Hindi itself is an acquired language that has heavy Persian, Arabic and Portuguese influence as much as Sanskrit. It's an Indo-European language and not an "Indian" one. English is as foreign as Hindi is to our South Indians. Hindi is no way relevant. 10:29 Ennadhu? Idhu English talk show illaiya? Not finding faults, but just making you aware of certain ironical things.

Over dramatised assessment, due to Indian education system we produce one finest human resource in the world, regarding donkey race for engineering courses or other competition it due to historic poverty & job security that is with skilled courses. May I tell same going in medical, management,CA, courses also. Kids do suicide in those nations also were kid at age of 30 also play with cartoons with zero pressure you which country it's Japan.
Sucide is more a culture & psychological phenomenon in some cultures people start shooting with guns at school & other sucide for zihad.

I am tired of fighting this battle. I need some space for myself. And i hate school...i wish i knew that it is okay to drop out of school...if so i would have done it long back.
