Clear Air Turbulence is the second studio album by British jazz-rock fusion band 'Ian Gillan Band', released in 1977 with cover by Chris Foss. The album was initially worked on during the period July 1976 to September 1976. A UK tour was promoted, though all of the dates were cancelled until April 1977 in order that the new album could be rerecorded and remixed at Kingsway Recorders, London.

Wow. There's a lot to know when flying through moderate-severe turbulence. I never knew a lot of this. I've been through a couple of turbulence episodes where flight attendants flew up and smacked into the plane ceiling. People were screaming like on a roller coaster. I appreciate the training that pilots receive. There's a lot to know.

I went on a lads holiday a few years back and we had a couple of beers at the airport. We hit some of that mad turbulence that causes the plane to dip up and down quite significantly and makes you totally lose your stomach. We were putting our hands in the air and enjoying it far more than the rest of the passengers!

i flew on delta from miami to amsterdam, and when at litterely the middle of the ocean there was for like 30/40 minutes extreme turbulence then decended 3000 feet and it was over, and when we gained that 3000 feet back 40 min later the turbulence was back. what is that?

In 1966, I was in the Army and was being transferred to Korea. We flew in what was then Northwest Orient Airlines Boeing 707 from Seattle to Tokyo. Due to a storm over the Sea of Japan, the airline put everybody up overnight in a hotel. We continued our trip to Seoul the next morning and I almost got into a fight on the way. From the moment we left the ground in
Tokyo until we landed at Kimpo Airport in Seoul, we were in moderate turbulence. Now about the almost fight. The idiot setting next to me was trying to drink a styrofoam cup of coffee with no lid on it. Coffee was spilling all over him as the plane was going up and down and sideways. I watched this for a while and it became so funny, I started laughing at him and told him that maybe he should ask for a lid if the attendant could even get to him. He got mad and for a moment I thought he was going to throw the coffee at me and I was ready to respond with something a lot drier and a lot harder. But then he dropped the cup (I don't know if was on purpose or he just lost his grip) and he then proceeded to ignore me for the remainder of the flight. I just wish I had a camera. because it was hilarious!!!!!

Thanks for the good and gentle explanations... but the passenger that I am still can't understand why does the structure of the plane as well as all the elements attached to it like the seats and the luggage compartments have to shake in a so chaotic, violent, noisy, worrisome manner during each turbulence episode! (I am quiet sure the pilots in the more compact cockpit are far from experiencing the same disturbing effects like passengers in the cabin !) It sounds to me like the way even the best aircraft structures are built today do not integrate the best elasticity / flexibility material and/or principles that would prevent/minimize the stress on the structure integrity each time... like if the structure capacity of tolerance is still very limited, and still rely on a bit of luck to keep everything together under severe or extreme turbulence conditions ! though I have to admit that the best airplane experience I've known with less turbulence effects is by far the Boeing dream-liner ! the comfort and safety feeling in that aircraft is fantastic and it must have something totally different or revolutionary in terms of structure engineering ! or Am I wrong ?!

I was on a DC 10 once coming into Atlanta from Frankfurt Germany and it was pure dee hell. I didn't think we were gonna make it. Seriously. It seemed like we would drop straight down 200 feet then you could feel the wings catch air again and then positive g's made it feel like your back would break. Luggage was bumping up against the floor, I had a radio in my lap I had to catch when it sailed over my head---ho lee shit I don't ever care to go through that again.

I have 20+ years experience as mariner and dangerous turbulence at sea occurs when the ship slams into a wave and causes the hull to spring up and down stressing the metal with a singing noise (eeek , eeek). This is dangerous. I experienced the same phenomena on 747's twice over the Pacific. The fuselage was springing up and down moaning and groaning after slamming into some bad air. The behaviour is the same whether water or air because they are both fluids.

There are still some videos for you to cover for nervous passengers however. For some reason the older I get the more I dislike flying, and as is stands I would rather drive or catch ferries than risk falling 30,000 feet. I just can't help, knowing statistically planes are safer than cars, feel that the next time I get on a plane something awful is going to happen. Reassure us all that birds wont get sucked into engines, engines wont suddenly cut out and or explode, sudden downward free falls into the next life, landing wheels wont jam up, brakes wont fail.
I know its all an illusion, but thanks for explaining what turbulence is anyway, I've always wondered that!
EDIT: I have just found some more videos pop up on suggested covering engine failure!
