Eww. The (non native) 8k Pimax is much worse than the (native) 5k+ or the 5K BE/OLED version. Even reading text. Maybe when graphics cards are well beyond a 2080ti in MANY years. When Pimax upscalling is set to 2.5 it looks better then the 5k types. The 8k still has trade offs besides the FPS hit. The 5k+ is the most popular preference. The screen door effect on the 5k+ also got new displays with headsets currently sold compared with the earlier batches sold. Screenshots can be found on the web showing identical Pimax 5k+ headsets with massively improved SDE on the newer version of it. Hopefully they can do the same with the BE/OLED version which will make that in to an excellent headset we all want. Software has also massively improved and much more to come. Recently they turned off totally unseen pixels to gain a good 10% FPS. A lot of other improvements to. The old 1080ti performance on Pimax headsets has now improved to give similar results as a 1070 or a Vega 56. No Brainwarp, yet. When it comes to non business level HDR's costing a good 5 grand or more. Pimax is looking like top dog. Although it should be since it costs around double the amount of the other more commonly known HMD's

The main issue with the Pimax VR headsets is that the LED strip isn’t RGB, making it not match with setups that aren’t black and blue.

I'd like to see the Pimax headset get going properly so that it may actually kick the other competitors into actually developing a good CV2 headset for PC rathher than all jumping on the insideout traccking budget train. Only decent next gen-ish headset so far is the Vive Pro, and because Oculus are dragging their heels they're able to take the piss with the $1000+ pricetag.
Glad I wasn't in the middle of a mouthful of breakfast when he announced the price of those slippers though. That's about the price of a full VR headset and you are forced to sit down to use them. Unless they manage to get the cost of the units down drastically after launch and the hardcore VR enthusiasts have bought them, I don't see them lasting long :(

Inward curved screen edges would probably counter the distortion no? And then eyetracking to move the len's in conjunction with the pupils keeping the center of the len's, in the center of your vision no matter where you eyes move. These two things solve the immediate issues facing this tech.

+Leon Jimenez I'm sorry to tell you but there is a difference and you can tell, less hertz means more lagging, and more blurriness, and more easy to feel sick. In the other hand if you are going to spend all this money to use it in simple games or simulators so then yeah... you might not feel the difference, but what is the point of VR if you will be only using it for primitive or simple graphic video games and not the hardcore graphic ones.

The hallmark of a truly good company, indie or not; they are willing to accept critical reviews of their product... and then make it better and ask for another critique. I've had my eye on the Pimax for a while after the Vive Pro failed to make any realistic improvements that justified the cost. Still going to wait until the bugs are worked out and the control systems are in place (or maybe just the former if the headset is really mind blowing) before I pick one up. This will be my next VR purchase, if they keep going the way they are going. These guys really demonstrate they are dedicated to their product and making it good.

Running a 8K headset on a Aero 15X 1070Max-Q version. HEadset vertical placement on the face is important and I have found FOV edge distortion is effected by how close the HMD is on your face. If I push it gently in then there is less edge distortion.
Some users have called for distortion profile adjustment and maybe that is required as face structures change.
As for the speed vs resolution argument. I have been using the headset in Il2 BoX series and experimenting with fps speed but in a nutshell, for me, low speed in fps as indicated in game does not seem to give me nausea issues. I am comfortable to run the sim at 30+ fps and I think this is the case as head movement with the HMD is smooth. You notice the fps in objects passing you ingame like aircraft but when turning your head in cockpit, the experience visually is smooth.
Pimax is closed beta testing BrainWarp which is their version of Asynchronous Rendering (1 eye followed by the other) and this should effectively allow for doubling of fps in headset. For mid power systems this will really help. All in all, the headset is very good as it stands and has cemented my VR skeptical self into being a VR sim fan. The immersion in BoX is brilliant and the 1 to 1 scale and head tracking brings the sim to a new level of experience. Never to be played on flat screen again.

    • Leon Jimenez
      Leon Jimenez 3 months ago

You might be talking over the heads of some of the commentors. I mean Linus is still in his inexplicable Hz trip of anything needing 120+

  • Alexander Langella
    Alexander Langella 4 months ago

I still expect people to trigger the same problems VR has always triggered. Headaches, eye strain, vertigo, dizziness, migraines/slight seizures if prone to either.
They need a new medium to create the experience.
However if this really does reduce nausea over the short term, that's good, but how about prolonged exposure. Some symptoms only occur over prolonged exposure, both in a single sitting and over repeated usage.
You require a MUCH longer exposure to be sure the dizziness elements aren't present. A good hour should do. Though I'm assuming the eye tracking is the direction they're going in, as most of the problems are likely due to eye strain and refocusing due to keeping track of two orientations: game and real life.
Hopefully this really does improve the experience in long-term gaming. I would prefer something more akin to sleeping in a chair-bed and allowing the mind to connect, but perhaps that's too dangerous. Belief in death if it happens in-game...which could be possible given the brain cannot distinguish between practice in the mind and physical practice, alongside other visualizations...not that there has been any proven death in sleep = death in life scenario, but it wouldn't be like one would simply awaken in their own mind into conscious thought. Should be interesting once that type of hookup occurs...but given the player is aware they're in a game world, that might assure few problems, though I would wonder if stress levels are higher under that form of gaming medium.

  • Pow3rus
    Pow3rus 4 months ago

I think you are wrong about the framerate going above 90Hz
90Hz is good and what really need improvement is resolution.
I play most of my VR games at 90 FPS but I don't mind playing slow games that really benefit from ultra graphics in 45FPS.
Elite Dangerous is not impacted by 45FPS or other games like hellblade, chronos....
Anything that isn't played in roomscale with touch controller can be played at 45FPS comfortably I think. I play assetto corsa at 90 but it's also playable at 45 and honestly if I had the choice of higher resolution with 45 FPS I would pick it.
+ you shouldn't be allowed to say things like that if you don't have at least 1000 hours of vr

    • Leon Jimenez
      Leon Jimenez 3 months ago

Yeah with Pimax adding brainwarp I can switch from 64 to 72 to 90 hz. And guess what.... NO DIFFERENCE! If any human can tell (so far 7 have failed at guessing correctly) then they also have to admit it had zero effect on gameplay except lower fps allowed me to bump up graphics.

I'm rather disappointed that they are focusing on bells and whistles, rather than things like frequency. I bought a Rift DK2 back in the day, and a FOVE VR a few years back too, both of which caused me debilitating headaches and nausea after only about 10 minutes of use. I have no idea how common or uncommon that is, but I have READ that better frequency and FOV could reduce these effects so I would hope VR headset makers would shift their focus in that direction eventually.
