Formica subsericea colony, 3 years old, has been started from a single queen in captivity and now has 500+ workers and brood. This colony was raised in a Nucleus formicarium last year in the "teach me" store in Raleigh, North Carolina. The colony continued to produce brood starting one month ago (Feburary 2012).
The formicarium is the Pioneer formicarium from Tar Heel Ants.

Nathaniel8448 I am not sure why I cant comment on your original question, so I will just make a comment of my own and hope you see this. Yes, the ants can walk freely out if you remove the glass. Whenever you need to clean this or any of our other formicaria with magnetic glass panels, that is how you would open it up to clean it out. The magnets are very strong ("super strong") so it would have to be something you would do intentionally to remove. With small colonies it is easy to take the glass off to clean, but with larger colonies you need the assistance of an extra container or formicarium to move the ants into temporarily.

@Bryce Laplante It will be this week. There is a bit more planning to do on the options.

I was being serious when I asked, it's probably a dumb question but I am interested in the formicarium and will need to know how the ants will stay inside once the glass is removed.

Nathaniel8448 they will escape and most likely move to a different area if that were to happen

How does the creation of a new formicarium usually happen for you? You have a lot of great products and was wondering how you come up with the ideas for them.

They are really random honestly. I wish I had something more exciting as an answer. I think a lot about how to recreate what ants need in captivity (proper humidity, clean chambers, substrate lined nests, etc.). Sometimes I get inspiration from other ant keepers who chat, sometimes the ideas just "hit me" when I am in a store browsing materials.
      Thank you!

Will the ants escape if you remove the glass?
