Alot of people bring up the ages of the princesses but if you think about it, historically it makes sense. Things were different back then. People didn't live as long, laws were different ect. Many women were married and had children in their early teens. It was the norm back then.

It'd definitely be seen as racist with today's sensibilities; but you're probably right, back at the date of creation of the first Dumbo, they were probably meant to be anything but racist (If they were, they wouldn't be a positive force on the characters.)

Forgot to include the deleted centaur scenes from Fantasia which included very offensive goofy female black-caricatured centaurs acting as slaves/assistants to the angelic, beautiful white female centaurs (which, when you watch it, seems worse even than Songs of the South). And now, as an adult, I realize that the crows from Dumbo are problematic... but damn, if they still aren't badass with a great song. Phoebe, I always hated your voice on these videos, but seeing you at the beginning of the video actually helps to alleviate the hate because you have a nice way about you and I now understand that you are an actual person and not just a disembodied voice.

Did anyone who watched Aladdin, see when Aladdin licked the sultan’s ear? I never studied Arabic culture, so I don’t know if that was supposed to be an honorable gesture anymore than the priest’s boner at the end of “The Little Mermaid” was deliberate.

You forgot to mention the one crow in Dumbo was named "Jim Crow". The segregation laws in effect in the US until the Civil rights movement of the '60s were referred to as the "Jim Crow" laws. The writing team probably thought they were making a clever pun but that is so not cool. It's like if someone today made a black caricature character (like a 1-dimensional rapper or something) with the initials "BLM". In reference to Black Lives Matter. Ugh. I like Disney's vision and his legacy. The man himself isn't a role-model.
I did a class in high school that centered around "famous faces" of social/societal movements. The final project was to pick someone we didn't discuss and present on how they changed the world. I picked Disney for how he basically created the "kids" film genre & animation. But I regret it looking back; as I feel being famous & successful in a societal shift and being a good person are two different things. I should've picked Fred Rogers fro Mr. Rogers' neighborhood. Now there's someone who DESERVES the respect he gets!

Aaaaaand if Disney characters were ALL ONE RACE AND ONE STEREOTYPE then people would say he is only using one race, one sterotype he's a racist for not diversifying his sorry are we all robots? Many of your picks I do agree. Peter Pan was one of my favorites, but I haven't seen that movie in many, many years. Now for Song of the South, I don't see anything wrong with the movie. It was set in a time where words such as (apologies for offending anyone) Negro and Nigger were a part of their daily lives. And if people actually watch the movie from beginning to end, you see both black and white people use those words.
So to have a Disney classic not aired because of such words, it's kind of dumb. That was how people used to talk back in those times. Is it right? No, not really. But you can't forget about classic movies and books that have certain content. In the real world, you are going to encounter anything and everything.

Yes there are a lot of racist stuff in the older Disney that haven’t aged well. Its important to know that it wasn’t just a Disney thing a lot of films did it life reflecting life and until quite recently these stereotypes have only become jarring. We know it happened and we can only learn from it now by making Disney films such as Princess and the frog and Moana that celebrate different races

  • Anime Huntress
    Anime Huntress 5 months ago

for me I've always been aware of the stereotypes that Disney has characterized. However, i never saw it as racism in a bad light, the way i saw it was them addressing things and kind of shoving it in our face. An example is this, I'm Native American, so the Peter Pan scene to me was more of Disney taking a stereotype and pointing out how little anyone really knew about the culture. (This is something still done today, I've had a couple of foreigners ask if i lived in a Tipi, and they were actually serious.) It is how the song starts after all. As for Pocahontas, anything that brings attention to American history and especially the Native American side of it, which is usually over shadowed and often forgotten, is a good thing. If people watching the princess and the frog take interest and learn more about the south during that period then there is a point to it. To me that is how I've seen many of what others think of as controversial. Perspective is a powerful thing, and for me it was less about bigotry and more of them pointing how those differences weren't really there just what we perceived as being there. Whether that was how it was intended or not that was how i took it.
Also, there is something to be said of being true to history versus politically correct. So as far as the ages go, its not really offensive. It's not right and i don't like it, but you can't change history or how we acted in the past, we can only learn from it. Sticking our heads in the sand and pretending it doesn't exist or didn't happen solves nothing and changes even less.
