Go Pro Chin Mount - DIY for curved helmet.

  • Published on Feb 21, 2017
  • How to make a DIY go pro chin mount for your helmet.
Heys guys, so I've been looking for a way to mount my gopro to the chin of my helmet for a while now. I have seen a few ways of doing it but this was the only one I found that worked for my helmet so far.
The rain has finally cleared up here in Auckland so a new motovlog will be coming soon featuring the new chin mount point of view!
Make sure to subscribe and give it a thumbs up if this helped you. Thanks to everyone who has subscribed to the channel so far, really appreciate it.

Sandpaper my helmet?... I don't think so.

@Zamsonite B i think 3m is ok, but using sand paper on helmet is a no no 🤣.. can't even do that to my $200 helmet 🤣

Ray emerson Ayag sure.. my latest helmet is a Shoei and I find it hard enough to put a 3M addhesive sticker on it.😂

Why do use the putty what purpose does it serve?

Why you just can’t add the adhesive directly on the mount?

With the tape between adhesive and the actual helmet your just applying adhesive to the tape though right? That doesn’t effect the adhesives bond to the helmet?

Here in the state's that epoxy stuff is called JB Weld and you aren't lying, it smells like the dirtiest fishy stank pussy on Earth.

Great video, however wouldn't the layer of masking tape create a weak link between the epoxy and the VHB? I recently did research on how to chin mount my GoPro Hero 6 Black to my Scorpion T-1200 Freeway. Given the helmets curves, I resorted to a curved mount that makes perfect contact on the side of my helmet, and has several mounting joints that extend and aim the GoPro center on your chin. Also in another video, someone used an epoxy like you did, however they stuck it straight to the helmet with no VHB.
Personally, I see your method is superior because you can still relocate it if you realize you've made a mistake down the line. However, I would use black epoxy, and be sure to sand off all the masking tape to ensure there's no adhesion on weak materials. No weak links.
Only reason I'm paranoid about perfect adhesion is because every now and then me and my friends go to a shut down road and hit high speeds. Last time we did that, I had my GoPro side mounted. I pulled my head up at speed, and the wind drag was insane, so I tucked back down ASAP because I'm still suspicious of the VHB.

Nice view man, I'm hoping to get something similar with my new build. Hope I can get close to the same results. I'm surprised you are getting the handlebars with the gopro up that high.

I did it using Milliput and 3M VHB double-sided GoPro tape and it's super solid a day later. The only thing I'd change is applying the tape to the Milliput while it's still malleable so that the tape AND the putty conform to the contour of the helmet instead of just the putty. I only confirmed the putty to the helmet and there's some tape hanging because it doesn't conform properly when applied between the putty and helmet. Also keep in mind that if you don't use double-sided tape that the putty will likely damage your helmet finish if you want to remove it later.
The stock double-sided tape mount wouldn't conform to the side or front of my K3 SV, only the top. The Milliput eliminates all the bulky angle adapters and lets me just use the sticky mount.

Thank you, it's held up well! doesn't seem to have weakend at all. Always a little worried in the back of my mind when it's super windy on the motorway haha but to be honest I think it's practically the same as sticking a gopro on the usual way in terms of hold. Thanks for the comment, will definitely check out your channel when I get home from work : )

Shoei is a bit ... annoying. Another option is AHGB has a special side attachment option they made ... but this is cheaper, not by much and this sort of looks a bit tidier.

why not just use the gopro curved helmet mount, or don't use the 3M tape, just that mould directly to the helmet and mount?

      BOMBER 2 years ago

sammyb_883 At least you gave it some thought. good detailed video, I'm sure subs will see the benefits. I have a Bell Bullitt and didn't want anything permanent so I used velcro straps.

Is there a curved helmet mount? None of the mounts I've seen in NZ would sit plush on the chin area of my helmet and I couldn't find any gopro attachments that addressed that problem. I even tried getting a chin and side mount and combining them to make a sort of arm bracket that came round to the front of the helmet, but again I couldnt find a spot for the mount to sit anywhere near plush. Also I did consider just using the putty directly onto the helmet but decided against it in case I want to take the mount off one day, imagine the putty would have been a bitch to get off compared to the gopro adhesive tape. Plus this way cost me like 8 bucks all up. Sorry for the essay haha, cheers for watching!
