But I like my tomatoes, apples and green bell peppers cold...for snacking. My aunt told me tomatoes have more flavor when not stored in the fridge, but they aren't as firm and delicious to me at room temperature. Plus, I honestly don't notice THAT big of a difference in flavor based on how it was stored. - - This was a nice video to watch, but I won't do any of this stuff, ever! I don't cook, so I wouldn't be saving veg scraps to make a veg stock. - - I do what I can to help Mother Earth. I don't liter. I break down my trash where I only use one trash bag a week vs. four. I ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS recycle! I will hold onto a plastic bottle until I see an actual recycling bin. Not sure how much good that's doing considering China no longer takes our recycling.

You would think loose fruit and veg would be cheaper compared to those pre-packed in plastic, but unfortunitely they are not, which is stupid and many cant afford to buy. If i'm getting any loose veg/fruit, i at least dont put them in plastic bag. One thing my family does do, is composting, and growing some of our own vegetables and fruit during the summer time.

If you scope out the marked down produce that is about to go bad, but you'll use it that day. You could get it and save money! Except the store probably wraps it in plastic. I've treated myself to mangos and artichokes cheap this way.

@MrAranton ok i will try! thanks for the advice

    • MrAranton
      MrAranton Month ago

Obviously I don't know your parents; but the main cause of food is not a failure to compost, it's throwing away food because it you bought more than you were going to eat and/or stored it improperly. Compared to that composting is next level and not particularly impactful. And if your parents have no use for compost, you're not going to convince them. Your best bet would be to create a use that doesn't involve a lot effort on their part; but I don't know how doable that is. If it isn't my advice to you would be to focus your efforts to get them more eco-friendly on something that has benefits that are easier for them to see and that has a greater impact. Since I don't know your parents I can only guess, but I think avoiding plastics is a good bet. Just don't be dogmatic about it, ease them into it and remember: Every little bit helps.

i use an old plastic litter box container (tidy cats 17lb one) for my food scraps, then I toss it in my greens trash. I asked my local SoCal Mismanagement about it and they said that was fine. I still wonder if this is rhe best I can do. I don't have a compost location in my community and I have no reason to compost it myself

I appreciate this as a way to save money and survive, but it's environmental impact is literally zero. The USA wastes half of its food... but not on the consumer end. It's restaurants throwing out what doesn't sell within the day, because it's worth less a day old. It's also throwing out produce that doesn't look pretty enough for a grocery store, even though it's perfectly good tasting, and then worst of all, poisoning thrown out food so homeless people don't eat it.
Consumers impact is very low. Our real difference making power is in protest, and voting.
