Nothing is more annoying than seeing someone speed past you just to have them get caught at the red light and you catch up, but when a cop gets them... it's a wonderful experience

@TrashDeviant I don't care if someone gets in front of me. It doesn't make *that* great a difference in driving - what, an extra fraction of a second? I do understand that most drivers don't "see" motorcycles. It's a shame and probably has to do with their training or ability to multi-task or something. I'd love to see a study on people who use cellphones and other distractions when driving and the people who are involved in motorcycle/car collisions.
I don't know how necessary it is for motorcycles to 'split', though. I think it's location related, to be honest. Texas rural roads (even the highways and interstates) are pretty open. If you aren't in a pileup or jam, do you really need to engage in potentially reckless driving? I understand in-city driving is different, but the same things that are allowed in a city should be discouraged outside of one.
I'm glad we agree on protective gear. I consider it a necessity - like any other protective equipment - denim, and a good heavy denim - is the least I would feel comfortable with.
If you put your kid on any motorized vehicle, unless you don't care about potential head injury, they should have a helmet.

@Golden Gryphon Lane splitting in stopped traffic is actually safer for motorcycles. Less likely to be rear ended at a traffic light. Besides, what does it matter to you if he got in front? It isn't a race. He's not cheating in a competition or anything. Plus bikes accelerate much quicker than cars (on average) and anything that shortens a traffic line is okay by me. Now if a motorcyclist split lanes past me and then rode slowly in front of me, I'd be mad. But I've never had a motorcyclist get in my way (except for that one cop on a bike).
And yes. Riders, wear your safety gear. Shorts are not adequate. My friend came off his bike a few days ago. He was only on gravel but shorts and a shirt wasn't enough. He looks like he got attacked with a cheese grater. And that was loose gravel. Imagine if the gravel had been glued together with tar. At least he was wearing a helmet. If you don't have leathers, at least wear some denim or something. But really, just get leathers (or motocross gear) if you wanna ride a bike (unless you're just teaching your kid on a pw50, but make them wear a helmet and long protective clothes)

@TrashDeviant I'd put all of that on the same level of annoyance.
It's all dangerous for other people, and it's why you have to be able/willing to drive defensively.
Quite frankly, whether it's legal or not, motorcyclists splitting lanes is just plain stupid. You are driving a motor vehicle. If you *really* are in a position where you are too good to wait in traffic with the rest of the drivers, you shouldn't be driving. Have your chauffeur drive you, if you're that important. (And, btw, armor up for goodness sake! That helmet, isn't going to do you a lot of good if you're lacking arms and legs from whatever the heck you did or got involved in. Jeans and a protective jacket - AND SHOES! I mean, this one idiot I saw this weekend was wearing a t-shirt, shorts and nothing else. It was like he was asking to get into an accident.)
I respect big rigs and semis. Great people and this country would fall apart without them. (I just wish so many drivers didn't act like they were the only ones on the road, tiny cars and semis both.)

Hey Blaire, this might not help, but just found out the reason lane-splitting is legal in Cali is not only is better for the environment, but also safe for cyclists as bumper to bumper collisions are basically all accidents that occur. By removing a "bumper", your drive and the other's around you become safer in comparison.
Plus with the heavy traffic out here on highway 5, 1, 101, 80, and 680 here in the Bay, going north or south, that HELPS.

the reason for those headlights (tail lights do this too as well) and the wheels not seemingly be normal is due to the shutter speed of the camera. a video is just a series of rapi images that are timed together. if the timing is right than an object with similar timing will appear wierd. the reason why headlights and tail lights do this now is because of the led implamentation in that specific vehicle.

A lot of states law enforcement typically state that lane-splitting as a motorcyclist is for when you come to a red light and you're in traffic, as it is overall easier for the motor cyclist to move and get into a safer spot than most drivers. Lane splitting in active traffic is a very good way to become road splatter.

I was sitting at a drive thru for burger king one day and heard a really loud engine revving. Burger king was to our left and that's where the noise was coming from. Suddenly, right in front of us 2 motorcyclists zoom past while doing wheelies at maybe 90mph. Not 2 seconds later a cop car zooms past right behind them. I just about died laughing.

The whole LA situation with the motorcycles scares me sm. I go down to LA once a year for a Disney Land trip (I live nearby and it's just a tradition) and every time I'm driving or even a family member is driving and there's a guy going through traffic in between lanes I instantly am scared. I don't want to hit them!
LA is a hell hole :(

First Video: On two way roads the double yellow line means neither side can pass. With a single yellow line and dashes, any driver on the dashes side can use the oncoming lane to pass someone. This is used to limit who can pass and when (hills, blind curves, areas that collect rain / ice easily). So if you are driving and the yellow line is solid on your side of the road, you cannot pass unless you want to potentially get a ticket.

So that is one of the main reasons the person got pulled over. His side was a solid yellow line, he shouldn't have passed anybody especially a line that long.

seeing 13:30 reminded me of a story about my mom. Her school bus was stopped, sign out and everything. She was around five so she wasn't paying attention. Her house was across the street and she went running in front of the school bus. Well, her older sister told her to stop just at that moment, and my mom listened. A woman in her car just blitzed by her nose. Mom still doesn't know how her sister knew to say that at that exact moment, cause she was coming out of the school bus and the woman was going in the direction of the school bus, so my aunt wouldn't have seen it. My point is this.... if you see a bus stopped... just wait even if you are late... I mean what is a few seconds going to hurt.... If you run into a kid..... you'll have more than a few seconds and you are definitely going to be late. I doubt my story is going to get much attention, but I wanted to put that out there anyway.

    (1:10) That is:
    • Illegal use of lane, as you didn't turn where you needed to
    • Illegal overtaking, as you are overtaking multiple vehicles in succession going in the opposite direction of the traffic (but overtaking multiple cars doing with the traffic is legal, as that's the point with multi-lane roads).
Maybe there was something more I forgot.

idk if you'll see this but the thing with motorcycles is called lane splitting and/or filtering and Cali is the only state it is legal in to my knowledge
the pros to it are that it alleviates congested traffic some because of how quickly a bike can get moving from a stop it allows for more traffic to get through a light as the bikes aren't taking up space that could be cars
the cons its dangerous and people tend to be jerks and don't like when other people don't have to wait so they try and cut off the bikers or open a car door on them

So the first one is written up as “Traveling more than 200 feet in a center turning lane”. Happened to my sister.
Also CA is the only US state that allows motorcycles to lane split. It is also allowed in Europe, where it’s more necessary due to smaller roads. The evidence from Europe showing it was safer and reduced traffic convinced CA to legalize it, but the rest of the US is too hung up on how “unfair” it is for motorcycles to “cut in line”.

Very happy for the Good ending with that one as well.

A good rule of thumb. Police normally, 90% of the time have illegal window tint so you can't see the uniform/laptop. If you see a Ford Explorer, Chevy Tahoe, or a Ford Crown Vic with incredibly dark window tint and black paint, it's a cop. The spotlight is also a dead give away.

You think Colorado drivers are bad? Come down to Palm Beach County during snowbird season. I've had days coming home from work in a good mood then, out of foxtrotting nowhere, some idiot causes a wreck, another slows down to look at it, everyone else slows down to look at it, a 1hr 10min commute becomes a 3hr nightmare, and I have to drink a glass of whiskey when I get home before I punch a hole in the wall. I-95 is the WORST!

That was a turning lane. If you noticed, it was solid on the other side as well. Those lanes are meant to be used for turning so you don't block traffic. Using them as just another lane is illegal.

Not gonna lie, as a relatively new driver, I have done skipped two lanes once, only after triple checking for cars, in my defence, I was leaving an underground parking space, and the lane I needed to go to made it difficult due to how close the parking exit is to a three-way traffic lights. I'd only ever do this if I'm 100% sure I won't hit anyone, and after I made a necessary turn to the left most lane. I was lucky there weren't many cars.

Its a California thing where bikers are allowed to split (used to be per se legal as it wasn't expressly legal however it's since be codified as legal). However, it generally needs to be under 35.

When a motorcyclist goes between lanes, its called lane splitting. And in some ways, its safer for them. If someone doesn't see them in busy traffic and they are in the center of their lane and they get ready ended can cause a huge amount of damage to both the motorcycle and the rider. It is scary when assholes lane split and do care what's going on around them though
