  • Ever wondered how the thirst quenching drinking coconuts of Thailand are processed? I visited a coconut supplier in Chiang Rai to see how its done and was very impressed with the knife skills of the workers. Here the young drinking coconuts are delivered by truck from the south as its a little cold to grow vast amounts of coconuts in Chiang Rai.
They are hand processed in 2 ways, first is cut and shaped so they sit flat and easy to open with a machete. Second is all the husk removed to present the coconut itself. If you have drinking coconuts in Chiang Rai, this is where they come from.
It's amazing how the taste varies with species and age. I find the young coconuts fresh from the tree irresistible. Thanks for watching and please subscribe if you would like to see more videos. Automation and AI is ending all job opportunities. A day will come where human start thinking not to have baby cz of affordability. The richest and strongest person will survive. He will be the only one living in this world surrounded by machines and finally kill himself cz of depression cz no one will be there to hear his feelings and emotions.

Wrong, you have to open your eyes up a bit & see the real story! They are slave labour from across the border in Myanmar, working as un-documented workers for less than the minimum wage. If they speak you will know they are not Thai nationals so they will not give away their identities. I've lived here 10 years & know how it works !
By the way I'll let you do the maths, currency conversion 240 baht for a 12 hour day !!
Do you still find it amazing ?

Where can you buy one of those knives. They are sharp and cheap. What's the name of those knives? Forget those stupid expensive knife sets that are sold by con men in the West guaranteed for life. Absolute bullshit! All knives needs to be sharpened once in a while. Knives that are guaranteed for life can't be sharpened easily once they go blunt. The cheap knives can easily be sharpened and become as sharp as new.

It's a preservative, I think sulpha based like they use in Red wine. Its a weak solution to stop the husk browning. Unlike red wine where you ingest the preservative the coconuts are not affected at all.

A simple machine can do all this and a lot faster. these workers should be running those machines not killing themselves instead of a machine

    • Sirivan Nomany
      Sirivan Nomany Месяц назад

      clarence spencer
They do if it was a big company, but as you can see this is just a small family run business. Would it be worth it to spend millions of baht on machines and still pay people many would you have to sell to make back your investment( 30 to 35 baht is $1)

    • clarence spencer
      clarence spencer Месяц назад

the implication was not for the worker to buy the machine, but companies made for mass production and export to buy the machines, hire these folks to run it, and everybody make a ton of money. it is called investment and market economics. OR, continue this medieval way and remain medieval poor. your choice

    • Sirivan Nomany
      Sirivan Nomany Месяц назад

      clarence spencer
A simple one machine cost between 700,000 to 900,000 baht it’s safer but not faster then when you do by hand. One coconut cost 10 to 15 baht wholesale. Unless you’re big million dollars company and do big export to other countries, then use machines. Math wise is not worth it.

When I watch these agricultural videos of different crops being harvested and processed by hand I wonder how long it will be before those hard working people are replaced by automation.....and laid off, and without jobs their ability to buy and eat their own food will be un-affordable.

I live in Thailand, believe me automation will never take over the slave labour from neighbouring Myanmar.
I bet you're all watching this thinking Thai people are working. You notice no-one is filmed speaking?
They are Myanmar workers from across the border on less than the minimum wage for a 12 hour day
around 240 baht local currency for yes 12 hour day !!
Automation is one thing the owners will never pay for, labour is cheaper than machines over here !
A coconut can be bought on the street for around 30 baht each (just for the drink)
As you saw them bagged up when delivered to the street vendors they just cut off the top & put in a straw for you to take away !
30 baht a pop doesn't send enough money back for automation !!
