Jesus, that argument about 95% of the population believing something to be true then it is true because of herd instinct is so much bullshit. Time after time we've been proven wrong. We thought the sun rotated around the earth.

To all Christians: The Bible is rife with misogyny, homophobia, and genocide. The Bible condones slavery and incest. Keep cherrypicking the virtuous verses all you want, but the reprehensible ones are still there for all to see. You're a lost person who has been indoctrinated by propaganda from the dark ages of human nature and is afraid of not knowing all the Universe's mysteries. Instead, you're taking the easy way out and is gullibly believing every iota of what that heinous bible of yours is telling you on all facets of life. You don't know all the answers and don't ever claim that you have them. No one does.

Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God.

Ricky Gervais has definitely been influenced by Monty Python. I mean, none of us want to actually die. We love to live. But it's nothing to be afraid of either. At the end of it, what have you lost? We come from nothing, and go back to nothing. So what have you really lost? Nothing!

@Dobbie Parsons Your Bible condones slavery and the genocide of infidels. The Bible is brimming with misogony, bigotry and homophobia. Keep cherrypicking the virtous verses from it. The reprehensible are still there. The cognitive dissonance is strong in you. Neither logic or science can convince you. You are trapped in the religious prison you've built for yourself. It's very disparaging to see humans trusting the unreliable words of charlatans from 2000 years ago.

I think the best morals are our own. There is nothing harder than being accountable only to yourself and your own conscience. Knowing that only you know your own secret pain, no invisible man knows your secrets and pain and is watching you and keeping track of your "good deeds" and forgiving your bad ones. You are accountable. You answer to you. And no one else is keeping track of the good you do and no one is going to reward you after you die. You're just going to die. Live with that. Accept it. And move on. It actually feels good. You grow up. You learn to handle yourself better and to govern yourself better and to be accountable more for your own behaviour.

@2fast2block Science, in contrast to religion, says it doesn't know how life started. Science curiously tries to discover the answers, using the same rational framework that made it possible for you to post you comment. Religion says it has the answers already, is anti-curious ("doubters are fools") and historically we invented things in spite of religion, not because of religion.

It's pretty nifty knowing that someone I admire became an atheist at the same age as I did. People will sometimes express some kind of shock or disbelief when I tell them I became an atheist when I was 8. Being able to point to someone well known who became an atheist at the same age seems to lend a bit of validity to my claim, and makes it easier for people to accept that what I'm saying is true and I'm not making it up for some weird reason. Luckily it isn't an issue that comes up very often, but when it does it usually pisses me off. (Seriously, why would anyone lie about something like that? What purpose would it serve?)
