that's how D1 divers practice. D3 just dive on the swimmers while they are practicing.

They land on the mat stiff legged, which is how they would enter the water, but that can't be good on the knees.

@LL We do practice on the boards before dry land so we get used to jumping far away from the boards. Once you’ve been practicing for a little while, you just instinctively go over the gap

@Bill Sedutto if you are doing a flip, a double, etc then you go in feet first.

@Mandy Robinson I agree .The orthopedic doctors probably love all the athletes. Knee, and hip replacements are the most common. Guess what, in diving you use both. Knees are alot of cartilage .Once that wears down it ends up being bone on bone 🦴. I think they should stay with an easier landing to make them feel less shock or impact to the body.

    • Mandy Robinson
Mandy Robinson 3 months ago +1

I thought that about the knees too. Seems more dangerous.

    • Rob Manser
Rob Manser 3 months ago +15

I thought that when I saw them land with straight knees 😮 Would it mess up water entry practise too much to bend them when landing on the mat? The gap under the board looks a bit dodgy too - if you slipped off you wouldn’t fly off to I’ve side like at the pool, you’d rebound your face into it on the way into the pit. 😮

  • Hodin

Wouldn’t suggest landing like that. Even with padding land with your legs fully extended is a disaster waiting to happen.

    • Keith Emerson
      Keith Emerson 3 months ago

@Per Westermark yes, but going with running. Someone running and heel sticking with a straighter leg will develop problems with knees and hips before someone striking closer to pad of foot with a more bent knee.
TLDR: If her landing is more of a one off, no real issue. However, no one can say THAT stiff legged landing won't be at a higher risk of complications if she lands consistently like that.

    • Per Westermark
Per Westermark 3 months ago +2

@Keith Emerson Define "slammed". Every step you take produces an impulse up through the leg. The mattress does not nees to remove all forces. It just need to reduce the max force to a level that is acceptable. And they don't need to sink down much to manage that. In the end, it's basic physics formulas. How many mm of compression the human leg and shoes has when running and how much more kinetic energy to handle when jumping and what compression distance that is needed to get a similar force on the joints.

    • Keith Emerson
Keith Emerson 3 months ago +2

Wow ppl. Even with pads, landing straight kneed WILL catch up with a person. Meniscus and trochanters can only be slammed into each other so often.

    • Per Westermark
      Per Westermark 3 months ago

Soumds like you have missed they are divers. They don't train to land on a floor but to land on water. And it's perfectly safe to load on the very thick mattress.

So I’m a diver for high school and off season and I’ve been doing it for a bit over 2 1/2 years and doing dry board landing my like that since day 1 and it isn’t as bad as you thing for your knee. It actually shows you control and this is how your supposed to land it. It you lick out you knees it may hurt but most of the time you over rotate as you land so you don’t hurt your knees
