Quantum Physics for 7 Year Olds | Dominic Walliman | TEDxEastVan

  • Опубликовано: 24 май 2016
  • In this lighthearted talk Dominic Walliman gives us four guiding principles for easy science communication and unravels the myth that quantum physics is difficult to understand, it’s all in how it’s explained.

Dominic Walliman is a physicist, and award-winning science writer. He received his PhD in quantum device physics from the University of Birmingham and currently works at D-Wave Systems Inc., a quantum computing company in Vancouver. Dominic grew up reading science books and remembers vividly the excitement of discovering the mind-boggling explanations that science gives us about the Universe. If he can pass on this wonder and enjoyment to the next generation, he will consider it a job well done.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

He says what you need to know regarding the understanding of quantum mechanics at 10.05. The theory can't be conveyed using common sense explanations, comparisons, analogies and the like. It can, however, be understood very clearly in mathematical terms. So, if you want an understanding of quantum mechanics, read a mathematical explanation of it. Richard Feynman's book QED does this very well for the general reader.

when you said it, it makes me hopeful that one day I'll understand little bit/basic of of them.

I guess it also could've had something to do with the fact I had an instant crush on him... Such a brainy, attractive guy. (I feel that intellect is attractive to begin with, so he's doubly attractive to me.)

It's very grounded explaining if you've taken or is taking Chemistry. Good job explaining!

For anyone who still don't quite understand it, I understand some of what he is saying, I havent taken the Quantam Physics yet, but I am soon!
    - Nuclear fusion is when two atoms (usually hydrogen atoms) combine in a place with intense heat and pressure, like the sun and combines with a vast amount of energy. That energy is sunlight. Nuclear fusion generally produces a LOT of energy, and it's relative abundance is high cause we have lots of hydrogen atoms. This is however unpractical because you'd need to reach an impossible amount of heat and pressure to make this.
    - The atomic structure is made of protons, neutrons, and electrons. There are no electrons in the atomic nucleus- they orbit the nucleus in orbitals. Protons have positive charge, neutrons don't. The number of protons in the nucleus determines the element. (E.g. hydrogen has one proton, according to the periodic table any element with exactly one proton is a hydrogen atom) Electrons have negative charge, so as long as the number of protons and electrons are the same, it is a neutral atom. If it has more protons, it will become a cation, or a positively charged atom due to the fact that theres a lot of protons, making the charge more positive. Vice versa, if there's more electrons, it will be called an anion.
    - Quantam means the amount of energy require to move one electron from one energy level to another. (Energy levels are basically the oribitals in the atom. Like the model of the solar system, each orbit is called energy level. You need a specific amount of energy gained or lost to jump from energy levels. There cannot be any electrons in between. )
    - Quantam mechanical model illustrates the allowed energy an atom can have, and its location in the atomic structure.
I'm no Dominic Walliman, so I can't explain very well. if you still don't understand, my bad! Reply and I'll try to do my best.

Love it! This is so important. It's not really about quantum physics, obviously, but about communication, teaching, pedagogy. Perhaps the seconds and third principles could be condensed into one? "Not too far down the rabbit hole: stop before you lose them" and "keep it simple: clarity over accuracy" They're kind of the same thing, and three things are easier to remember, and more of a magic number. Excellent! Thank you.

Things only seem strange if you don't understand them. An orange has both an inside and an outside. Here you are right now, living with-in reality. But it too has an outside. The outside is different than the inside, so the laws of physics on the two sides are different as well. So things like Particle/Wave Duality, are child's play to understand if you include the laws of physics that exist on the outside as well. But today's physicists still do not do this. They are still thinking in the old 3D format. Seeing the 4D structure of an electron for instance, makes it bloody obvious as to why and how it can go through a thin wall, hence complete a quantum tunneling. But today's physicists still do not do this. They are still thinking in the old 3D format.

Making others see the way exactly we do, making others have the same conceptual systems as we do, maybe that is the problem Dominic is dealing with. But unfortunately his particular scientific domain does not see such a problem as one of their appropriate problems. Psychology, semiotics, anthropology, linguistics, discourse analysis, rhetorics probably are more ready in dealing with such a communication problem.
In terms of technique, we may imagine that someday we are provided with means to transfer our knowledge to others without any use of verbal communication: like two computers connected with bluetooth. To achieve such a technical progress, what is necessary is research on the possibility that two units of organic brains are connectible the one to the other.
