What Happens If You Lose Weight TOO FAST!

  • Published on Jul 5, 2018
  • Ever wonder what happens if you lose weight really fast? Are there side effects like excess loose skin or a slow metabolism? Does losing weight too quickly cause your body to enter a starvation mode? Are these all myths or should you avoid these common weight loss mistakes.

Is there such a thing as losing weight too fast and does losing too much weight too fast have negative consequences? Most people believe yes when you lose weight too fast you wind up with a bunch of excess skin and you increase the chances of gaining all the weight you lost back. But is this actually true? Today we'll look at how losing weight fast effects the amount of excess skin you end up with at the end of the process, but let's start first by figuring out if losing weight too fast negatively effects the amount of weight regain you regain. I mean is slow and steady weight loss actually better than losing weight at a faster pace when it comes to hitting your goals and maintaining your results for the long run. The most common held belief is that you should lose about 1 or 2 pounds per week. This maximum weight loss of 2 pounds per week is recommended by doctors, trainers, and dietitians, and anyone that goes outside of this standard recommendation of 1 or two pounds per week is looked down on because that kind of advice is believed to be ignorant and its believed to endanger the health and the long term success of the person looking to lose the weight. One of the most common concerns with fast weight loss is that it usually takes a huge amount of effort both with diet and exercise to lose weight fast which leads people to resort to unhealthy methods. Some people that try to lose weight as fast as possible attempt dangerous methods like crash diets, or they starve themselves, or they go from 0 to 100 with exercise and all of these approaches can be very unhealthy. Also you probably can't maintain and keep up with these excessive approaches to weight loss as permanent lifestyle changes. You can stick to a crash diet for a week, maybe two, maybe even a month, but by month 4 chances are high that you've long since quit. Most experts believe that when you lose weight slowly you do it through ways that allow you develop healthy eating behaviors that you can continue applying long term to keep the weight off. On the other hand we're told that most diets that promote rapid weight loss are often very low in calories and nutrients, which may put you at risk of many health problems, like muscle loss, nutritional deficiencies and gallstones, especially if you follow a rapid weight loss diet for a long time. Many people on a crash diet will also experience hunger, fatigue, muscle cramps, dizziness, and they might feel cold throughout the day. On top of that it's also believed that when you lose weight too quickly chances are very high that you're not losing fat mass, but you're instead losing water weight or worse yet muscle tissue. You can't be losing body fat in a healthy way consistently week after week at a rate higher than 2 pounds per week. Can you? Or is that just a myth that we're constantly told. Before we get into what the studies have to say on this topic, I'd like to say that as a personal trainer that has worked with thousands of clients I can tell you that some people lose weight really fast and others lose weight really slow, but based on my experience whether they lose the weight fast or slow doesn't seem to have that much of an impact on maintaining that weight. In fact from what I've seen some people especially people that are really heavy, if they don't see results fast they'll get demotivated and quit. Let me give you a simple example, if you're looking to lose 10 pounds and you're losing the average of 2 pounds per week, then every week you're 20 percent closer to your goal. You know it'll take you about a month of maintaining a clean diet with consistent exercise to get to your goal weight. However, what happens when you're looking to lose 60 pounds to get to your goal weight. At the rate of 2 pounds per week, it's gonna take you 30 weeks of perfect dieting just to meet your goal weight. That means after half a year of controlling what foods you eat and how much.

It's really not that difficult - it's science. Concentrate on your Macros, you will be eating more protein (to retain and grow the muscle) than usual but less carbs - so you'll still be getting your recommended calorie intake . Exercise 3-4 times per week. Don't go beyond losing 2lbs per week.. Follow these process (especially the macros) and your body will change so fast you wont even believe it.

This won't work for everyone. I do not have a thyroid ( that means I have to rely on a synthetic pill) it's not the same as having your healthy organ which helps regulate your metabolism immensely. *I can not fast at all* Just eating healthy and exercising, I lost 10 pounds in 10 days.

The thing is, if you have no gym experience treat your 1st year as a learning phase. Learning your body type, what exercises suit you, physical limits, and how quick you recover. These are things you can't read in a book or here from a trainer. Don't even use a plan for the first couple months. Just go to the gym and mess with the equipment. Let the habits of some of the people there soak into you. Get comfortable in there. Feel how less judgmental people there are compared to most people.

When you do start a regimen make sure that you commit. Commit to reaching your goals. Commit that you will do just about anything to stick to the routine. Improvise if you can't make it to the gym. One thing that really helps is tying it to other goals like learning to dance, going out more, getting into music, listening to audio books, listening to podcasts, etc. Visualize everyday how different your life is going to be 5 years from now.

After the 1st year each year after that will go by in a breeze, and 2 years in you will astonish yourself, and that's not even the best part for some. The best part will be realizing that you have become a totally different person after reaching your goals. All those tapes you listened to and friends you met will do that to you. Effort becomes minimal after that because you will know you.

I weighed 182lbs when we went and 174 when we got back. We walked almost 65 miles in that past week with disneyworld our step counts were between 20,000 - 25,000 steps a day! This has started me into losing weight and taking care of my body more!

I started at 376 pounds in October, 2018. Decided to change my eating habits and accept a slow weight loss. Took years to gain, so I accept years to loose. I turned 65 This past January also. As of this date, April 23, 2029, I am at 325 and my A1C has dropped from 9 to 5. I do not consider myself as dieting or exercise a lot, just eating more protein and less starches. Its all in the mind set.

don't push yourself over the edge in the gym, keep your workouts short, try to do them in under an hour or so. Go to the gym 3 days a week. Focus on what you are eating. If you'll change bad eating habits, you'll see changes right away, try fasting and cutting out sugar. That's how i lost weight. I'd recommend 16:8 fasting and minimal sugar intake, no snacks and no fast food. Be honest with yourself. Good luck! Just my advice.

I've lost 47lbs in about 3 months, I've been on a sort of fasting diet. It's called a 16/8. It's when you go 16hrs without eating then you have 8hrs to get in the nutrients you need. I go 8hrs sleeping without food, 8hrs at work without food, I drink plenty of water throughout the day no sugary drinks and then when I get home I eat dinner usually chicken, vegetables, and a Protein shake before I lift. I have a pretty physical job so I only work out for about 30-45 mins.

I went up to 250 while I sustained injuries and was a previous peak weight from meds and bad life style. I lost without much help using normal cardio, biking to and from work and enjoyed biking like 25 mile rides a few times a week while keeping calories around 1500 plus burned deficits. In a couple months I was down almost 22 pounds. I’m still injured with a cuboid problem keeping foot swollen and knee just started letting me squat. I was at 250 and at 237 this morning so this time without exercise I’m losing the 1 to 2 pounds. My carbs rang from 50-160 per day depending on my actual meal. I take a smoothie I concocted myself as one meal, mixed frozen fruits and berries into 1 cup, 1 cup unsweetened almond milk, 4 tables spoons of chia seeds(fiber and good fats) ,1 scoop whey protein with no bcaa ( as I stabilize more financially I will change some things like add a slice of avocado and fresh spinach to lean into a green smoothie) and a fat free plain Greek yogurt cup which I am thinking of cutting out. Otherwise my meal for price, protein, nutrition for the other real meal is 4-8 eggs, depending on day, also depending on day solo, rice , a little potato or even on bread. If solo or bread I add chopped spinach and chopped kale. I also take a multi vitamin to polish off any excess missing nutrients. My potassium is 500-1800 a day and doctor said I’m where I should be. I’m happy so far where I am and yes I did break of a week ago to eat other stuff or up to 2000 calories a day for that week but my pallet reset got me back because I think it was more to make sure I wasn’t missing something. Like a starving person willing to eat every part of a fish like its eyes for the omega fats story. Kind of like avoiding a crash diet because I did do intermittent fasting prior and made 4 eggs and that smoothie my 1 meal a day. I didn’t fall off the wagon because I’m still slowly losing the weight. Simply put in on a combination of things on my own that I watched videos to see what works for me. Eggs diet , smoothie power house, though not perfect I’m carb cycling by demand of body with the range I noticed = caloric deficiency of 500 of 2000 daily, high protein low carb while letting some days go over 80 as high as 180 so I can return to the lesser carb day, I’m still in pain but work a junk job on my feet every shift but look forward to summer to just enjoy anything I can do like biking if that’s all. After all if I can heal and strengthen all my leg issues then squats will be easier to do more, lifting will he not hurt the wrong way and that muscle connection to Achilles to back won’t be restraining me. I was born with tight tendons as it is, when bad I’m a toe walker.

I lost 11 pounds I 1 week, but I’m just a 15 year old that used to eat really really really unhealthy. I cut off all unhealthy foods I’m used to eating about everyday like chips, juice, candy, any kind of snacks high in calories, I now only eat healthy foods mostly veggies and chicken, I also work out everyday I run for about 30-40 minuets a day I burn 300 calories during that time frame, I also do sit ups, push ups and crunches. I started this diet and exercise routine because I’m tired of being really unhealthy, for all the 15 years worth of time of being on earth I never considered my weight gain and how unhealthy I was, now it’s time for a change im only eating healthy foods, healthy snacks, and only drink water I’m determined to lose all this extra fat I don’t need and ready to start lifting weights! Wish me luck

I think the best thing for extremely overweight people to do is to learn portion and quantity control first before "eating clean". I was 85 pounds heavier than I was about a year and a half ago and I was eating pretty badly for the first few months of that. Once you're used to not eating as much it'll be much easier to learn to eat healthier foods.

I changed my lifestyle with weight watchers. I’m a 40 year old 5’9” male and started July 8,2018 at 275lbs. Today, February 11,2019 I’m 200lbs I’m very satisfied where I’m at, and I don’t have any loose skin at all. My waist was 49” around my navel when I started and today it’s 36” !!!
I have been a weight lifter since I was 15 years old so I have more then average muscle mass oppose to the normal 75lb overweight middle aged man and I continued to lift heavy the entire journey.
Weight Watchers is the best in my opinion. It’s not a diet but more a simplified way to eat healthy. Over my lifetime I’ve lost and gained 50,60,75,80lbs multiple times but this time I’m staying a lifetime weight watcher member to keep it off and myself accountable after all it’s free for me now that I’m at goal. Good luck to anyone who reads this and wants to lose weight.
My wife started with me on weight watchers and in the same time frame she has lost 107lbs. She has a lot more to lose then I did and we both know she will be dealing with loose skin issues. After all she did give me 3 beautiful children. I am prepared to pay for skin removal surgery if that’s something she wants to do and yes she has already expressed interest. Happy wife happy life! And a boob job hahaha I like big titties 😂💪🏼💪🏼👍🏼👍🏼

I am down 60lbs but my scale hasnt moved much in a while despite my workouts and 1600cal "diet" - BUT i am still loosing inches which makes me believe that I am just substituting weight loss for muscle gained. It took about 18 months until I felt completely normal.

Hey, I know that feeling. My weightloss journey began in March 2018. I was at roughly 265lbs (120kg) and finally realized that I had to stop eating so much. Now in January 2019, I weigh 229lbs (104kg). That's 36lbs (16kg) down. At first I thought, "okay, this is not that much, I'm still obese and I don't want to look in the mirror anymore and see the same fat person I've always been staring back at me." But that's only half the truth you know. My pants size went down, I don't sweat as much as I used to, my friends and family tell me I look different, but most importantly I feel different. I feel stronger, I feel happier, and the more I think about the weight I've already lost, the more I realize that for me personally, it is a lot of weight. Some people here say they lost 100lbs in a year and I applaud their strength and discipline. But that just ain't me. I'm doing what I can to lose the weight I want to lose and I am doing it.
You might not see it in the mirror for a long time, but trust me, once you start excercising and eating more healthy (including more fruits and vegtables in your meals), you will start to feel the changes and one day you'll see them as well. And I'm doing my best to work towards that day.

The way I do weight loss if I let go over the years. I’m almost 40 and did this about 2 - 3 times in my life. I start with cardio for 3 - 4 months, 1 hour with average 155 heart rate, and using elliptical makes this easy to do. After my body gets used to it, I usually lose a lot of weight from it and I add weight training. Using that method, getting cut is very easy. Keep in mind that I don’t diet, I think it’s dumb, so I prefer creating the difference with exercise.
My weight gain were from getting out of the military and stopping exercise for a year. And the other 2 time were from major work injury.

When you lose weight slowly, you are more likely to get discouraged with slow losses, and fall into temptations with cheat days and eating junk. But at least you won’t have excess skin. I lose 180 pounds in a year. It’s been a couple years now and I’ve kept it off. I changed my eating habits and exercise from the get.

I lost 130 pounds in around 16 months. I have loose skin and I have no idea how to get rid of it. I went from 290-160. Now I'm around 180 pounds which seems like a good weight. I gotta get rid of this excess skin. I've been trying for 2 years and just gave up. Also I started the weight loss around 16 years old. So I hope I didn't ruin my growth.

Look up IDMprogram with Dr. Jung. If you really want to get rid of it, at least make it better, then be prepared to earn through water fasting for at least 3 consecutive days a week most weeks. It is called autophagy.

i lost 75 lbs in 4 months several years ago. I did keep it off for many years - I've since gained 35 lbs back, however, that's not my point. My point is I had to have an emergency gall bladder removal 3 months into the weight loss. I was also cold all of the time and a lot of my hair fell out. Enough to clog the drain in the shower every morning. As a woman, that was awful. Also, not having a gall bladder has been a life changer since fatty foods and high fiber foods cause havoc with my digestive system now and cause intense pain in my gut. After that experience I would never recommend rapid weight loss for any one except to literally save a life. About my hair; here it is 12 years later, and it never grew back the thickness that it was before.

Man you're brilliant but I disagree with you; overweight people (me included) should understand that if it took them like 15 years to put that weight on they have to have the patience to take it off slowly but steady, 2 pounds a week is not discouraging it is just how the body works... Flash weight drop causes loose skin which virtually defeats the purpose of losing weight to look better, I think loose skin is esthetically worse than being overweight! Do not give in to your client's caprice, just tell them they have to be patient and take responsibility for their choices in life!

When I researched the "fetching tuti space" on google, the results I found determined me to use it! Following this particular diet plan provided me with rapid results in weight loss. I have dropped 20 pounds in three months and plan to shed another 10 pounds, which I know I`m able to achieve. I achieved good results even with a week of eating quite a lot of fatty foods many times a day..

”fetching tuti space” (Google it) is a diet regime that got me truly excited. This particular plan was the key reason why my friend was able to lose 11 lbs. I`ve been utilizing this for three weeks and have shed twelve lbs already. I truly haven`t transformed my lifestyle considerably. The program shown me how to control the amount of fat I take in..

I’m loosing about 4 pounds a day and I’m on keto, should I be concerned? I believe it might be because there is not enough keto friendly food around me, other than cheese cubes. I’ve been telling myself I hate anything with carbs and sugar because they taste absolutely disgusting. I’m not really too uncomfortable, only when I get tempted by food but I blow it off easily. I also drink plenty of water.
