Was in San Diego yesterday and got the alert to get away from the water because of one to three foot waves in the San Diego area. There was absolutely nothing to worry about there but seeing this type of devastation is scary.

This is a nightmare, I hope people in the areas affected by this are okay and able to regain a lot of what was lost.
First, I do hope that everyone who is going through this survives and are ok. This does seem less severe than the Indonesia Tsunami or even the Japan Tsunami. On another note/question, Do we know if this type of seismic event is capable of changing our weather systems? I know that having smoke and ash in the air is bad but it also helps to block the sun's rays.

The waves dont seem that high compared to the 2004 or 2010 tsunamis though but the damage is horrifying.,my prayers to those people in tonga.
The difference is that the eruption caused the upper water tsunami and starting point was in one point. The earthquake is raising the water from the very bottom and also the starting point is wider

I am glad tsunamis approach like flood water rather than the ginormous monstrous wave from above. I think that would be even more devastating.

This reminds me of the eruption of stories of Thera (spl?) in the Mediterranean Sea. Just like this volcano it blew itself up and left the island it was a part of in pieces. It's wild to think about the amount of power volcanoes release when they erupt.

The before / after pictures, if I recall correctly, were from a smaller eruption before the _'omg, look, from space'_ one. I think island pictures are still pending from the tsunami-maker. _[edit: They added a correction in the video's description]_

This is terrifying, but in the next 100+ yeRs(depending on how much that underwater volcano erupts) there will be a new island in the ocean.

The image of the island at 1:07 is false. That image came about from an eruption on January 14th. We do not have any images of the current island look due to all the dust in the air.

The after eruption photo is after the first smaller eruption earlier in the week. You can't get a clear shot like that right now.

It's just between the smaller and bigger eruptions. I could call it lazy fact-checking, but that implies incompetence when it's more likely an unintentional mistake.

I'm sorry for the people, but when you live on top of the ocean you can expect this kind of Devastation periodically. My family lost their summer home years ago because they were too close to the beach.

This was a three foot tsunami, and when you compare it to a regular thirty foot wave hitting the beach, you can see the difference between the two.
Tsunamis aren’t just big waves hitting the beach, it’s the encroachment of the sea onto land.

They are still big waves, just at a wavelength so large that it looks like a flood. Also because its a wave there are low points and high points as well as more waves behind it and also reflections off of other islands.
Damn If a Tsunami is gonna hit you definitely want it to be as calm as this one!

As a retired Petroleum Geologist, I am 100 times more concerned with our world's geologic disasters than anything "climate change" can ever come up with. Both of which, we as humans can do little, if nothing about.

@Timothy TwoTwoThree The Tsar Bomba was detonated around 13,000ft above the ground, which affects its reach. This eruption obviously did not take place at such altitudes. The distance it can be heard is not an accurate means of judging the energy output when comparing it to atomic bombs, especially if the eruption was partially or entirely underwater. Atmospheric conditions will also affect the distance at which the explosion can be heard. The Krakatoa eruptionin 1883 is thought to have been equivalent to 200 megatons, 4 times the output of the most powerful nuclear detonation, and this eruption was no where near that.

@boomkablamo Go ask your local Physics Professor and have him do a calculation. I'm not a Physicist, but when I was in University back in 2011, my Physics professor told me that the amount of energy during the Sendai earthquake was far far far more than Tsar bomba.
@boomkablamo The explosion likely isn't what produced the tsunami though. More than likely, as has happened at other volcanoes before, even in the last few years, was that a landslide caused the tsunami. The landslide uncovered the magma and when it came in contact with ocean water that is what produced the explosion as well as the magma probably just being gas rich.
It happened at Anak Krakatau just a few years ago, minus the explosion, and yet the tsunami was probably worse in the affected areas. Media is inaccurately summarizing the volcano as submarine, it would be more accurate to say it was partially submarine, and the bit of land that was at the surface and much of the slope under the surface probably slipped into the old caldera, which itself is evidence of this volcano being capable if massive eruptions even bigger than what just happened so even on that front there isn't anything out of the ordinary aside from these events being rare on a human timescale.
Current estimates are placing the energy output of the explosion to around the same as the Tsar Bomba. So, that's probably not true.

The "tsunami" that hit Santa Cruz was measured at 8 inches. Santa Cruz citizens swear it was at least 8 FEET.
Sea levels rose more from this 10 minute event than they have during the entire industrial age.

Considering the size of the explosion, Tonga was lucky. As far as the California pictures... seems some people just need more and more attention. There did happen to be a high tide at the exact moment it was supposed to be hitting Cali. Those waves in Pacifica are pretty normal during any major high tide and sizable surf. 2011 in Japan is a TSUNAMI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The footage tells a lot about when the sea waves took over the shore by surprise.

This video reminds me of the 2004 Sumatran Tsunami, and the 2011 Tohoku Tsunami. Although obviously more severe, regardless, its a reminder that life is precious.

This is my own opion, it reminds me of a few years back of the eruption of the volcano on one the hawaii islands areas, that there had been some oil or mineral fracking going on. There is also the ocean drilling for mineral and oil and the satellite centers laser beams inside the satellites can cut into the earth. Why are there so many underwater oil tanks. Remember the oil spill in the ocean around Louisana and the pictures of the oil tanks beneath the ocean water. Think people when there is so much drilling and oil pipeline being laid and the use of dynamite what is going happen. Its the people who have died because of this and homes destoryed, its so sad and when the leaders apply for state of emergency who will really get the money. Whose blood of those families is on whose hands. God is coming.
Thank you for posting the truth. I was innitialy scrolling through all of the comments to see if anyone had posted about this real possibility for cause. I am concerned that the draining or creation of air pocket chambers along the coastal areas in a line of succession will create tsunamis if intentilnaly detonated.
Or if these emptied offshore wells naturaly collapse in domino sequence caused by the first one collapsing resulting in a pressure change that triggers the rest.
Either way as you said, the ones causing this devastation and loss of lives simply are not held accountable and continue to profit from the misery and destruction.

The volcano had been erupting under water and it created an island over the recent years. Then the island collapsed and exploded when the water hit the hot lava and turned into steam. The island was blown to pieces and no longer exists.
