@Ansem I doubt they will do that too much money to be made by both parties all that will chance is Microsoft will now get a slice from every cod game sold for PS5

    • Ansem
      Ansem 4 months ago

I can imagine no cod on PlayStation
      Cod 1 PC only
      Cod 2 Xbox 360/ Pc
It did just fine and I don’t have to imagine it happened in 2005
In fact CoD 2 is still exclusive to this day

i mean this is insane if this purchase is confirmed in 2023 it will essentially make Microsoft unstoppable in the gaming world tho i would not be surprised if Anti Trust laws are peaking over the fence at what they are doing

I think this could start a buying/merger spree I think sony is going to make a move just because they will feel a need now that microsoft locked up activision. Nintendo just does its own thing, I don't think they buy anything massive sure a few studios but nothing like this. Nintendo is the wildcard though so who knows

Crazy acquisition by Microsoft. I think we can see Sony and Nintendo rethinking about whether they want to buy smaller studios or not now. It's going to be about exclusivity in the future.

@Danny Kerner it can be done, isnt as easy like in US but a foreign country can buy or do a joint with a Japanese company. Sharp is an example.Thats why Microsoft tried to buy Nintendo years ago.

    • Danny Kerner
      Danny Kerner 4 months ago

@RH80 although apparently there is some law stating a non Japanese buyer can buy a Japanese company so logically only Sony & Nintendo can do that

@Danny Kerner yea and that might be XBOX. Sega wont let sony buy them after what they did to the Dreamcast. But to be honest Sega doesn't seems to interesting in getting bought, specially after the deal they made with Microsoft.

Sad times when 3rd parties end up this route. Can lead to redundancies and great teams moving to other areas who made great IPs. I feel like 3rd parties are gonna be gone. Also feels like they are just trying to buy Sony out of the gaming world. Sad times

I just hope more indie studios breakout in the coming years. I'm tired of x company buying x small company just to have exclusives on their platform. I know big company will aquire small company eventually/maybe. I just want Microsoft to develop the studios they already have instead of buying left and right.

Imagine a RTX 3060, the prices are insane (because is out of stock), then the price falls to 50 bucks, you buy it with no second thought; that happens, Activision drops its market price enough to be acquired (thanks to its internal problems), if not for Microsoft, for Tencent, Activision was far from close its door before a Wall Street's wolf shows up

If this purchase even goes through, I myself a Game Pass fan, am kind of thinking this feels pretty monopolistic in nature. Overnight Microsoft owns a lot of the largest IP’s not just for the console space but the PC and mobile as well. I can’t help but be impressed with Phil Spencer and team’s pivot back the windows model of service first in the gaming space though.

  • Stéphane Leduc
Stéphane Leduc 4 months ago +2

I found it interesting when Microsoft announced back in 2018 that they had purchased Obsidian and Ninja theory and that hey had also put together a new gaming studio called the Initiative. Microsoft's lack of good exclusive games had been their Achille's heel for most of the 7th console generation and those acqusition meant they were going to try to fix that problem going forward and I thought it was very good news. Almost 4 years later, we still haven't seen the fruit of those acqusitions and now Xbox owns two of the biggest gaming corporations with Bethesda and Activision/Blizzard. Personally, I am not at all impressed with Microsoft as of late because while Sony has established itself as a leader in the video gaming world over the past few years by crafting amazing gaming experiences and offering diversity to their consumers, Microsoft are now trying to win the so called "console war" by just buying every talented studio/company available. I mean good for them. They'll be making that investment back in no time with all the money that's going to be coming in over the next few years. I've been a Playstation owner since 1997 and have always been satisfied with the experiences I enjoyed over the past 25 years. However, during the 7th generation, I was intested in getting the XBOX 360 over the PS3 because of all the bad press that Sony was getting, but ended up getting the PS3 mostly because of the wi-fi and blu-ray player. But after having experienced the likes of Uncharted, God of War, Horizon and The Last of Us, I can't see myself making the jump to Microsoft anymore. So I just hope that this new acquisition doesn't mean that other platforms won't be getting some of these games because that would be a huge bummer for everyone.

I love how you said that Microsoft will just allow Activison to do its own thing once it’s official, yeah right, you know how stingy Sony has been with just allowing cross platform with Microsoft and as well as their first party titles, yeah right bro seriously, it would be within Microsoft’s absolute best interest for the future of Call of duty, and blizzards games to be exclusively on their platforms only forcing Sony players to really reconsider what they are missing out on and why they even got a ps5! 😂😂😂😂😂😂 initially yes continue to make cod for both Xbox and PlayStation makes since in the short term of view and in larger sales numbers, however if it is only on Xbox more users will gravitate towards Xbox and stay on Xbox with its ever expanding library of games, because games win console war, not consoles PlayStation understands that and now Microsoft is going for the kill! 💀💀

@Last Sega is worth about $3.7billion. Nintendo's liquid cash and equivalents is usually around $1-1.5billion. So they couldn't outright buy Sega in cash. They would have to finance, find investors, and/or work out stock valuations. For the record Nintendo is worth $61billion. Less than Microsoft just bought Activision for. Nintendo is big, but they aren't in the same league as Microsoft.

      KRAZYD0NUT 4 months ago

Amazing news! Two American companies coming together, sure beats it if some foreign entity would of bought them out. If Microsoft puts entire Activision and Blizzard game libraries on Gamepass, it will be a huge win for gamers! Although I suspect they will charge premium to access all CODs. This is even great news for Sony fans, maybe we'll finally get a Killzone and long overdue Resistance revival. You can bet they are scrambling at Sony on how they will fill that fps hole once COD goes exclusive and Battlefield not including campaigns anymore. Bobby will probably stay on for years to come as part of a deal he negotiated.

Agree, Good news is all these games will be day and date on gamepass. Lucky if you see them on PlayStation after that. @PreNix that's irrelevant. The fact is those games are exclusive because it's more valuable than lost sales. MS can release Halo, Gears, Forza on Ps without paying 70B, why do you think they will pay 70B to do that? Half of Activision profit is from King aka candycrush, so honestly CoD lost sales are PEANUTS to MS, it's more valuable to build their gamepass brand. No reason to pay 70B just to make more sales. Doesn't make sense for Nintendo or Sony, so why would MS do it?
We had this discussion with Bethesda acquisition, it's already been proven. Please don't be delusional and think this is different lol

    • PreNix
      PreNix 4 months ago

@Eduardo Montes de Oca COD was never an exclusive to one platform, but halo, GoW, mario is or used to be. COD is a very popular game and not releasing it on a platform with over 100 million players will lose alot of money, if they care about money. I don't really care if they actually make COD an exclusive since i don't play it anymore

This is the beginning of the end for gaming as we know it. Wave bye to physical games. Say hello to one or two companies dictating what you play and how, with a massive sprinkling of micro transactions.

Microsoft helping to clean up Activision Blizzard is a win for those of us who have loved the games they have produced over the years. I hope Microsoft will clean it up and put resources to help the devs who just want to come to work, do their jobs and bring games to the player base. Hopefully we can see more of a healthy culture there and proper support for the devs to really be able to fix and bring back the glory our favorite games that haven't had the love they used to have.

“Almost like a monopoly” it is a monopoly. Think about the last 10 years. Games have been progressively getting shittier and this has ran hand in hand with more anti competitive corporate moves like this. The more studios and competitors the better the games. When you’re only competing with yourself do you honestly think the games will be better?

    • Jim Jones
      Jim Jones 4 months ago

@Andrew Mitchell did they not? And that was a monopoly of circumstance when the US had way over saturated their market and the only thing to be done was to save the gaming industry. This is something completely different. 70 billion dollars the largest acquisition that Microsoft has ever made and they already own a large portion of not only the gaming market but the software market as well as the computing and other avenues that venture into the military industrial complex and other facets of big government. Nintendo never had those other aspirations now did they?

Never realized until I bought my Series X how much more enjoyable it was to play over my PS4. It's good news for Nintendo since they make nice with Microsoft. This is exactly the back hand slap that Sony needed to realize they're not all that.

I hope that Activision can improve under Microsoft's ownership. The allegations against Activision are horrifying. Rather than being the product of a few bad actors, this appears to be an issue of company culture that has gone on for a long time and is deeply rooted in the company. Activision is not the only company with this problem, of course.

      KRAZYD0NUT 4 months ago +1

Look at 2 top games played on PlayStation? Fortnite and cod. Remember 90% of gamers are casual and don’t care about exclusive or even know what they are. Microsoft now owns 1 of them! That is huge

    • tph_dragon
      tph_dragon 4 months ago +1

It’s great timing for them. The news around activision prior likely dropped the price down to the low low cost of almost $70 billion. Fire a few people like Bobby Kotick and you’ve turned their bad pr into hype. Activision blizzard has a ton of ips at their disposal and it doesn’t matter if you think they’re overrated, they are huge. Cod, overwatch, hearthstone, Warcraft, tony hawk, crash, spyro, candy crush, etc.
They got a huge investment opportunity for possibly the lowest price they could manage.
And if nothing else they could make a video of crash high fiving master chief to really rub it in Jim Ryan’s face.

No, no, no. stop. Guess what? In 5 years you'll be asking "Why can't Xbox studios release a finished/good game without microtransicrions?" and it's because they will be controlling over half the AAA market... Like, Halo Infinite and Forza Horizon 5 are already falling short and are a bit embarrassing compared to the rest of their titles and everyone is fooled into thinking it's just going to make everything better... It's eliminating competition and betting your money is now in their pockets. These studios aren't likely to be any better than they are currently. At least dont expect a change in buisness practise...

This is a game changer. Microsoft has basically no 1st party exclusives. So what they do, buy them. Sony still has their exclusives, but not having COD will DEFINITELY leave a mark. I'm interested to see if Sony plans on keeping their trend of making and building their own exclusives, or go the Microsoft route and buy already established companies for the exclusives.
