I don’t think isabella’s power was ever to be perfect. It was simply to create beauty, which comes in all shapes and sizes. The perfect image was created by her family 😭

Encanto is a movie that puts multiple characters into the ideal child for society someone who is perfect someone who is strong and that type of stuff and because Mirabel was like we’re not supposed to be strong all the time we’re not supposed to be perfect all the time or we’re not supposed to be someone who we are all the time Mirabel was seen as the enemy because she was like not everybody’s going to be perfect all the time now everyone’s going to be strong all the time all of the kids besides the little one who talks animals represent something that a family usually wants out of their children and it’s unfair to the children you look at Louisa the pressure of what her burdens were she was being way down by the pressures of everything she had to do and at that point she started to question what a worthless and then Isabella she had to be perfect all the time but she couldn’t ever see the true beauty in everything because she was supposed to be perfect supposed to grow roses and not tea not beautiful plants I’ll because of her Abuela which when she does Wind up making a non-beautiful plant she saw the beauty in it because it wasn’t fake it was an honest thing it was beautiful and the only reason that anyone started to even do that type of stuff is because Mirabel put them on that path now I’m not saying that everyone’s powers are talking about what an ideal child is because look at Mirabel‘s mother healing most people at least around me they want their children to be construction workers not medics which is kind of bad because you look at me I am an extremely weak person my worth is not in my ability to lift heavy things my personal ability is using my brain to come up with plans but that’s besides the point your bell made Louisa realize she doesn’t have to lift so much that she is weekend at the end of every day she doesn’t have to be Superman she made Isabella realize that beauty is not something that is just practiced poses or symmetrical beauty is also very very the real side of who you are and Isabella is now able to realize that Boyles image of beauty is not the real beauty I don’t think Camilo really learned anything he probably still wants to shape shift into other people but that one is besides the point those three children Camilo Isabella and Louisa I’ll represent what people want their children to actually be someone they are just to be beautiful and strong I think Encanto definitely struck a nerve so many things because it’s true I was always told don’t be yourself up here OK you can just be straight for the society that you live in you can be fake to be your true beauty I’ll never listen to that because I found my beauty in my personality and then my brain of course everyone around me also thinks I’m cute so and then they’re like well you’re weak what you can you beat anybody if you’re so weak I’m not meant to be weak I meant to be a strategist not a builder I make extremely well-thought-out strategies on how to do different things I would be a better medic build designer or leader and the whole being a leader thing cannot be me because I cannot lead anything being a medic is questionable at best because you still have to tell people what to do of course all three of those are also now that I think of it you’re telling people what to do but like I said in my area pretty much everyone start being a builder is the best thing for you to get rich and you’ll be powerful I’ve called bull on that one Like I’ve said multiple times in this comment if you want to call it that I am weak my power cannot come from my muscles unless you want to say that my leg muscles are going to help me build buildings you’re going to say that one then yeah let me be your builder pictures of my strongest muscles

I feel like their ages play a lot into this. Isabela is 21, and mirabel is 15. We know that they get their gifts when they are five. And the lines "You just seem like your life's been a dream since the moment you opened your eyes" and "all I know are the blossoms you grow" show how their ages play into it. Isabela is 6 years older than mirabel, meaning that Isabela had had her gift already when mirabel was born, meaning that all she really did know was Isabela after she got her gift, when everyone began to think of Isabela as perfect. Mirabel never knew how Isabela was like before she got her gift and she truly always thought that Isabela had always been 'perfect' because that was actually all she knew about Isabela.

I think Isabela was even forced to be perfect before she received her gift. She is the first grandchild Abuela Alma ever got, I bet she did not cut her any slack and raised her into expecting to be perfect and powerful.

The melody of 1:32 when Mirabel is singing is the same melody that Isabella sings in her solo during “We don’t talk about Bruno” subconsciously telling the audience, THIS is the moment Isabelle’s dream life is being promised to her.

I like how the verse in We Don’t Talk About Bruno says “He told me that my power would grow like the grapes that thrive on the vine.”
This song is how her power grew. She learned that she didn’t always need to make “perfect” flowers, and she was able to make plants that weren’t as perfect or delicate as what she usually makes, but they’re beautiful anyway.

I love how Isabella acknowledges that it was mirabel who helped her destroy her “perfect” image. Mirabel helped Isabella let loose and become who she wants to be. And at the same time help both of them build a strong bond. I also love when isabella says “changing minds” mirabel says “you’ve changed mine” because at the beginning of the movie until their argument, before this song, mirabel thinks isabella is a selfish gifted child but when isabella got to open up, mirabel understood isabella’s situation and helped her with it.

I just have to say I love how Disney treated each character in this movie. The total lack of a villain plot is a masterful stroke that is echoing Pixar and Ghibli films and it's definitely pushing them in the right direction. They consistently kept the approach of introducing a seemingly negative character only to redeem/explain them later, first with Bruno, then Isabella and then Abuela herself. And this works so well to hammer down the theme of the movie without shoving it in your face or being patronizing about it. Everyone is flawed, everyone has bad days, everyone is imperfect, everyone is special.

The way she says "Jacarandas" is so magic for me. As a portuguese speaker, it sounds so familiar, and yet so unique (since spanish speakers apparently talk the "ja" as a "ha"), i always feel a bit happy when i hear a familiar word on a movie, even if it is spanish and not portuguese, just the fact that i can recognize vaguely the word makes me feel "home".
Even tho it is based on Colombia, i get this feeling of "home" throughout the entire movie, since it is really close to Brazil and some aspects of their culture are kinda similar to ours. I haven't felt so represented by an animation since Rio came out, and i'm thinking about learning spanish beacause of Encanto.
(Btw, this isn't me trying to make cultural appropriation here. I know this representation isn't aimed at me, and i know that although Brazil and Colombia have their similarities, they are different cultures. I just felt represented as a Latin-American and wanted to casually share this feeling.)

    I just made something unexpected
    Something sharp
    Something new
    It's not symmetrical or perfect
But it's beautiful and it's mine
    What else can I do?
Bring it in, bring it in
Good talk, bring it in, bring it in (what else can I do?)
Let's walk, bring it in, bring it in
Free hugs, bring it in, bring it in
I grow rows and rows of roses
    Flor de mayo
    By the mile
    I make perfect, practiced poses
So much hides behind my smile
What could I do if I just grew what I was feeling in the moment?
(Do you know where you're going? Whoa)
What could I do if I just knew it didn't need to be perfect?
It just needed to be? And they let me be?
    A hurricane of jacarandas
    Strangling figs (big, big)
    Hanging vines (this is fine)
Palma de cera fills the air as I climb
    And I push through
    What else can I do?
Can I deliver us a river of sundew?
Careful, it's carnivorous, a little just won't do
I wanna feel the shiver of something new
    I'm so sick of pretty
I want something true, don't you?
You just seem like your life's been a dream
Since the moment you opened your eyes
(How far do these roots go down?)
All I know are the blossoms you grow
But it's awesome to see how you rise
    How far can I rise?
Through the roof, to the skies
    Let's go!
    A hurricane of jacarandas (whoo)
    Strangling figs (go)
    Hanging vines (grow)
Palma de Cera fills the air as I climb
    And I push through
    What else, what else?
What can you do when you are deeply, madly, truly in the moment?
    (Seize the moment, keep goin')
What can you do when you know who you wanna be is imperfect?
    But I'll still be okay
Hey, everybody clear the way, whoo!
I'm coming through with tabebuia (she's coming through with tabebuia)
    Making waves (making waves)
    Changing minds (you've changed mine)
The way is clearer 'cause you're here, and well
I owe this all to you
    What else can I do?
Show 'em what you can do
    What else can I do?
    There's nothing you can't do
    What else can I do?

I love the foreshadowing. In Bruno's song she sings that the life of her dreams would be promised to her and her power would be about growing plants, and this was sung after a list of bad events, which Mirabel thought of as just her constantly being lucky and perfect when it could mean that the "ideal" life wasn't what she wanted or that her happier imperfect life would come to be. She also sings later of how she's fine, trying to convince herself that she has to marry the guy (forgot his name)

    • Eh
      Eh 4 months ago +6

really like how the song made it seem like the vision was already fullfilled, because isabella’s life is almost everyone else’s definition of a life of their dreams. So while it looked like she was the only one who actually got a good vision, in reality she’s probably facing the same bitterness everyone felt about the vision she received.

    • mysticknight14
      mysticknight14 4 months ago +12

She probably even thought Bruno got her future because she misunderstood, imo
She most likely thought that he meant the life Abuela wanted for her would be her's, instead of *her* ideal life
And that's why she's trying so hard to convince herself that she'll be fine, because if Bruno said that's what life she'd have then it was bound to happen and she couldn't change it
But Bruno's vision comparing her power to grapes instead of flowers foreshadowed the truth

I think the movie needed us to see her through Mirabel's eyes first and think that she was stuck up and perfect, in order to make the words in this song really come through. It's a shock to see it from her point of view, that she's forced into being perfect, only because we didn't see her that way before.

I know someone’s already commented this somewhere but I just wanna restate- that Disney did a really good job in this movie with no harmful stereotypes. There might be some that are there that are subtle but I haven’t noticed any, and I think it’s really nice that Disney didn’t make Isabela cut her hair or rip her dress or lose her ‘femininity’ throughout the song. Being stereotypically feminine wasn’t the problem at all, it was the pressure that was put on her. I also appreciate that Luisa can be super strong AND feminine without being portrayed as dumb like lots of other media portrays strong women.

For me it's the "How far do these roots go down?" line that gets me. Like she's been forced to remain shallow and "perfect" and genuinely doesn't know how deeply rooted she actually is. While Mirabel is who I identify, I see Isabella traits in one of my sisters, and... that made this beautiful and emotional. Disney nailed the issues sisters sometimes have.

I love this song because as an artist it's easy to constantly trash art that I don't find "perfect". Its easy to get disappointed and discouraged from something you love. You'll be okay if it isn't perfect, you put in all your emotion into your art, and that's all that matters.💞

I really REALLY love the "bring it in bring in" part (also the "fig!"). It's been done many times in songs but it was super unexpected. I thought they were going to do it all the way through but it makes it so much better it's at where it is. I would pay to just hear that part on loop

I really appreciate this number as an ex gifted kid and an oldest child- I totally thought they were going to villainize Isabella, but it’s nice to see her redeemed and the trappings of her role in the family explored. I can’t stop replaying it- help-

God Yahweh loves, and offers Salvation Only by Faith in Christ Jesus, because we sin and deserve hell, but God who is Great in Mercy sent His Son Christ to Save us, he became man and lived among men, but without sin, and suffered the punishment of our sins, was filled with the Holy Spirit, gave his Life for ours, and was raised from the dead by the Power of the Holy Spirit, by Order of his Father, paying with his death for our wickedness, giving us Salvation only by Faith, not by works so that no one can boast. The way the music is composed in this song is genius. In the beginning Isabela vocal is out of beat with the music slightly, which I think represents Isabela’s newfound discovery of her other side: irregular and wild. And also the part where Mirabel sang that she thought her sister was living the life of her dream is also reference to Isabela’s part in “we don’t talk about Bruno”. Overall beautiful soundtrack ✨

0:53 “It didn’t need to be perfect, it just needed to be” I feel like this applies to all kinds of art, especially since a lot of artists (including me) often get really frustrated when our art doesn’t come out exactly the way we want it to, but this quote and this song help us remember that the point of art isn’t to be perfect, the point is that you *made something* that’s an expression of who you are. Sure, it isn’t perfect, but who needs perfect?? You just created something!!! You just pulled *something* out of *nothing* and that is incredible!!!

    Lyrics :
    I just made something unexpected
    Something sharp, something new
    It's not symmetrical or perfect
But it's beautiful and it's mine
    What else can I do?
Bring it in, bring it in
Good talk, bring it in, bring it in (what else can I do?)
Let's walk, bring it in, bring it in
Free hugs, bring it in, bring it in
I grow rows and rows of roses
Flor de mayo, by the mile
    I make perfect, practiced poses
So much hides behind my smile
What could I do if I just grew what I was feelin' in the moment?
(Do you know where you're going? Whoa)
What could I do if I just knew it didn't need to be perfect?
It just needed to be? And they'd let me be?
    A hurricane of jacarandas
Strangling figs (big), hanging vines (this is fine)
Palma de cera fills the air as I climb
    And I push through
    What else can I do?
Can I deliver us a river of sundew?
Careful, it's carnivorous, a little just won't do
I wanna feel the shiver of something new
I'm so sick of pretty, I want something true, don't you?
You just seem like your life's been a dream (whoa)
Since the moment you opened your eyes
(How far do these roots go down?)
All I know are the blossoms you grow (whoa)
But it's awesome to see how you rise
    How far can I rise?
Through the roof, to the skies
    Let's go
    A hurricane of jacarandas (woo)
Strangling figs (go), hanging vines (grow)
Palma de cera fills the air as I climb
    And I push through
    What else, what else?
What can you do when you are deeply, madly, truly in the moment?
    (Seize the moment, keep goin')
What can you do when you know who you wanna be is imperfect?
    But I'll still be okay
Hey, everybody clear the way, woo
I'm comin' through with tabebuia (she's comin' through with that boo-yeah)
Making waves (making waves), changing minds (you've changed mine)
The way is clearer 'cause you're here, and well
I owe this all to you
    What else can I do?
(Show 'em what you can do)
    What else can I do?
    (There's nothing you can't do)
    What else can I do?

I think Mirabel and Isabella's previous animosity towards each other stemmed from them both being jealous of each other. Mirabel always felt overshadowed by her "perfect," "golden-child" sister who commanded so much attention, while Isabella felt pressure from her family to be perfect and get married, and likely envied Mirabel who avoided much of that due to her lack of a gift.

  • Rhamz Tajarros

This is my take on Isabela's character. Remember, they weren't born with a gift, they recieved it at a certain age. Being the eldest Madrigal of her generation, It is obvious that she was told to be perfect all the time by Abuela and to be pretty, be a role model, be prim and proper. Also evidence of this is when Dolores said that Mariano wants 5 babies, pink flowers grew on her hair, but Abuela removed that one (1) white flower on her hair.
Their powers are tied with their emotions, that's why at the first film, she can only grow flowers for beautification (that is less important in a community), because she's struggling to be perfect all the time that she don't know her real self anymore. That's why when she let go of her frustrations and addressed her own emotion, she made something different (a cactus). She touched it since she didn't know what it is, but she liked it anyway. she was also shocked when a flower dust (pollen) stained her, but in time, she learned to liked the new her and played with it. She even used it to change her appearance from someone Abuela wants to someone she always wanted.
I think that if she learned how to expand her power more, she can grow plants that are useful for the community too. Maybe once she has learned her true purpose in the family aside from being a Madrigal baby maker.
It's sad that alot of people struggles like Isabela, hope they will find the courage and the support that they need to break the barriers that hinders their personal growth.

i love how this part connects with bruno's vision; he said her power would grow, and now she's learning she can make more than what she made for years, she's getting her perfect life because now she doesn't have to put on a smile everyday to be the picture perfect image that her family bestowed upon her, as well as the bond between her and mirabel getting stronger over how the family (+ mirabel) treated isabella because of the image she had to put up.

Since Isabela is the firstborn, the first grandchild, the first niece, first sibling and first cousin u can really tell why she needs to be the PERFECT GOLDEN CHILD, because she's the first in all. The family will probably most likely have high expectations for her making her having to live up to her family's expectations, and the burden of perfection

Out of all the gifted Madrigals, I feel like Abuela knew that Isabela’s gift was the least helpful to the community. Based on what we see in the film, she only used her power for plants that are not crops, so even there, she couldn’t or didn’t use her power in that way either. This is why I feel like she was the most pressured to be beautiful and perfect, because Abuela didn’t want anyone to think a Madrigal wasn’t an asset to the community. She became a show instead of an actual person. That’s why the pressure of getting married was on her as well, even if Dolores is the same age as her. If she couldn’t be “useful” with her powers, the next best thing would be to produce more “useful” Madrigals. Not to mention her being the first grandchild (and first child of Julieta), so Abuela wouldn’t want the community to think badly of her. Just a thought!
Edit: to those saying she could grow other plants all along, yes, I concede, but I also think she didn’t even know she could do those until What Else Can I Do. Someone said that maybe at first, she could only do flowers, which ties in to what I think Abuela saw in her.
Edit #2: to those saying Camilo’s gift was the most useless, I don’t think so. He could take the place of anyone in the community, be tall if things needed to be reached, be small if he needed, and his appearance isn’t the only thing that he has going for him. His body can morph into the physical abilities of others as well.

I know this sounds weird af, but you could strangle or generally hurt someone with that gift. Honestly, Isabela's gift is good! Though I agree it wasn't as useful as like Pepa's. I'd love to have those two gifts.

To be honest, Isabela's power is the most powerful one, second is Luisa's, because being able to control plant life can be use as a weapon. It could destroy cities and buildings using trees, vines, and other wild plants like venus fly traps! She can also use her power for transportation using the vines! It would be an awesome power than just being able to shapeshift into a powerless person!

This reminds me of how I've progressed with my art. At first, I got frustrated because it didn't look 100% right, and now I realized that art doesn't have to be perfect to be good. So many artists could benefit from learning that. It's so freeing!

I love the character of Isabella because she's not typical 'Disney princess character' that always waits for true love. I'm impressed that she refused to get married and started to find her own life.

    Lyrics:
    “I just made something unexpected
    Something sharp
    Something new
    It's not symmetrical or perfect
But it's beautiful and it's mine
    What else can I do?
Bring it in, bring it in
Good talk, bring it in, bring it in (what else can I do?)
Let's walk, bring it in, bring it in
Free hugs, bring it in, bring it in
I grow rows and rows of roses
    Flor de mayo
    By the mile
    I make perfect, practiced poses
So much hides behind my smile
What could I do if I just grew what I was feeling in the moment?
(Do you know where you're going? Whoa)
What could I do if I just knew it didn't need to be perfect?
It just needed to be? And they let me be?
    A hurricane of jacarandas
    Strangling figs (big, big)
    Hanging vines (this is fine)
Palma de cera fills the air as I climb
    And I push through
    What else can I do?
Can I deliver us a river of sundew?
Careful, it's carnivorous, a little just won't do
I wanna feel the shiver of something new
    I'm so sick of pretty
I want something true, don't you?
You just seem like your life's been a dream
Since the moment you opened your eyes
(How far do these roots go down?)
All I know are the blossoms you grow
But it's awesome to see how you rise
    How far can I rise?
Through the roof, to the skies
    Let's go!
    A hurricane of jacarandas (whoo)
    Strangling figs (go)
    Hanging vines (grow)
Palma de Cera fills the air as I climb
    And I push through
    What else, what else?
What can you do when you are deeply, madly, truly in the moment?
    (Seize the moment, keep goin')
What can you do when you know who you wanna be is imperfect?
    But I'll still be okay
Hey, everybody clear the way, whoo!
I'm coming through with tabebuia (she's coming through with tabebuia)
    Making waves (making waves)
    Changing minds (you've changed mine)
The way is clearer 'cause you're here, and well
I owe this all to you
    What else can I do?
Show 'em what you can do
    What else can I do?
    There's nothing you can't do
    What else can I do?”

This song makes me feel good as an LGBTQ gay man... although my meaning and theirs are different, I still feel connected to it. At first through my life I hid my sexuality towards EVERYONE such as Isabela being perfect and not wanting to be the golden child... I talked to people about it and gave it a try opening up and being myself and let me tell you... IT FEELS SO GOOD TO BE MYSELF, doing what makes me happy, doing what I always wanted to try as Isabela felt so much better being herself and not perfect, I feel better being myself and not living a lie. of course there are downs like people trying to keep me out of this world, people leaving me behind, people being homophobic and rash physically and emotionally, people trying to convince me that what im doing is bad and try to stop me from doing it and there will always be downs but I can always look towards the ups and thatll be enough. my depression is low now, my anxiety about being found out is gone, trying new things in fashion and looks to help my insecurities which is actually working for me, and finally... not hiding who I am and not putting myself away just because someone else is uncomfy for the way I naturally am has healed me so much. I'm finally becoming happy an acting as myself which is so healing to me and if whoever is reading try this too, i cant promise itll be all good nor can i promise anything else, but, you might find yourself and i think its always important to do just that. speak your mind, act how you are, leave toxic people behind and start a life of your own, a story of your own and not read and copy someone elses story.

I loved how loving this family was!! Also when mirabel spilt everything to her father, it was really unexpected for me. It’s usual for the main character to just keep it in, but I never expected the whole family eventually finding out so soon. This movie is definitely unique to the other Disney movies. Disney needs to make similar ones!

Luisas stuggle of protecting the family and if she can even protect them
Isabellas stuggle to be be perfect

Delores struggle to keep her secrets which is harder to contain since she hears so much
Pepas stuggle to stay happy and not stressed
Juleitas struggle to make sure her children and family is not hurt physically and emotionally

@strwbrrytskki uwu thank you! I know it may seem like Antonio’s struggle was “short lived” basing purely on whether he could have a gift or not, but I think the purpose was to be a really good introduction of the movie’s plot too on how Abuela treats these gifts and, as a result, how she treats her family. His ceremony really sets the tone of every expectation that we later learn which was a contrast to how The Madrigals were portrayed in the first song.

    • strwbrrytskki uwu
strwbrrytskki uwu 4 months ago +5

i think antonio struggles as well. he has the pressure of getting a gift since the last one (mirabel’s) was a failure and abuela was bent on making sure antonio got a gift. he already has more expectations put on him than the others did at his age. and then right after that, abuela started talking about how it could benefit the village. he hasn’t even had a chance to explore his new gift and she’s already making plans to use him. he’s also trying to win her approval (like warming up her seat with animals) because he learned it from his relatives, who always try to please abuela

    • Ghoul Spawn
Ghoul Spawn 4 months ago +3

Maybe Antonio's "struggle" comes from being a shy little boy,
The first scene we see of him, he's hiding under miracles bed. And then the next when he asks Mirabel to walk him up the stairs.
Maybe he's not too good at communicating with others, he gets nervous, and that's why his gift is animals,
Some people who have social anxiety tend to love animals, as animals can be comforting.
Him having the ability to speak with animals can teach him better ways of being social and communicating with his family and others.
And I feel like after he got his gift, you can see newfound confidence within the boy. And how he helps Bruno in the way Mirabel helped him in the beginning, I think is also a reflection of that.

You know. Isabella’s prophecy from Bruno being the only positive one is possibly due to her being miserable with her own life.
After all, her power grows by expanding the type of flowers and plans she can grow. The life she dreams of no longer needing to be perfect and just herself.

Cool etymology fact: The names Jacaranda and Tabebuia come from the language Tupi, spoken by a lot of natives in South America (mainly Brazil). Jacaranda comes from Tupi-Guarani (yakara’nda) and it stands for "Fragrant". While it's unclear which branch of Tupi Tabebuia came from, the name is an abbreviation of "tacyba bebuya", which means "ant wood"

This song has a deep meaning. It really shows how Isabela struggles with being the example or the reference of the "pefect girl" that she doesn't want to be. Also, she feels pressed to pretend that it doesn't affect her, but in the song you can see that she seems really affected by the pressure of being "perfect", or "graceful" all the time. In the line "so much hides behind my smile" shows that she pretends to be happy in front of the others.
