Front office kept Michael Jordan, Bulls from winning more titles - Scottie Pippen | The Jump

  • Published on Jan 11, 2019
  • Near the 20th anniversary of Michael Jordan announcing his second retirement, Scottie Pippen talks to Rachel Nichols and Amin Elhassan of The Jump about the chances that MJ, himself, Dennis Rodman, Phil Jackson and the Chicago Bulls would have won more NBA titles if not for decisions made by Jerry Reinsdorf and Jerry Krause.

Revisitionist history by Scottie. Bulls wouldn’t have won another title. Scottie had back surgery following that 98 season and was never the same player. Michael cut his finger slicing a cigar right before preseason and would have missed the first couple of months in a lockout shortened season. Reinsdorf tried to keep Phil and offered him a huge contract but Phil was determined to leave no matter what. It’s popular opinion to blame Krause and Reinsdorf but the truth is a lot more messier and complicated.

Jerry Reinsdorf said "..the team will never get better.." when asked why they broke up the team.. Seriously. As if a team could be better.

I can't speak for 2000 cause Lakers where quite strong and young compared to the Bulls who would have accumulated a lot of millage on those old legs. But 1999 with a short season, that was almost certainly a ring for Chicago. It could have easily ended with 7 Championships.

What an asshole. Sorry Scottie, just too self absorbed and important to put up with. Jerry Krause put your team together. Jordan resented anybody claiming a role in his and your victories and you asshole walk around with chips on your shoulders. It is as if Russell, Cowens or Bird rested Red.
You know, they are not smart. Their accomplishment is bouncing and throwing a ball.

  • Jermaine Womack

Jerry Krause is responsible for puttin that unit together. Jordan is the only guy he didn’t draft. Everybody else, from Scottie Pippen to the head coach Phil Jackson, are all his guys. Add that to the fact that Jordan and Pippen are the only members on the second 3peat team that were on the first. Which means Krause had to tear that thing down and build it back up again.

I don't think that Rachel Nichols realizes that when she says that she forgot that Scottie played for the Houston Rockets before going to the Portland Trailblazers, she's actually making it obvious that Scottie's career wasn't big enough to care to remember details like that. Lolol (I love scottie pippen so don't misunderstand me.. not making a joke about him). But like if I was sitting there... I would be like (jk I wouldn't) why you forget THAT, Rachel? If it was Michael or something you would NEVER "forget" that he played for some team after the Bulls and before the Wizards. Even if it was a really short stint. Why you forget that about SCOTTIE though? Why you forget about what he did in HIS career??

The Bulls front office prevented a lot of shit from happening 💯💯. They could've had at least one more trophy back when Rose played with Deng, Boozer, and Noah. Not to forget Kyle Korver being they spark plug. They should've kept that core together because they was right there with Miami bro. They probably needed one more superstar but that was about it

A lot of people think if MJ didn't leave the first time the bulls could have possibly won 8 straight. I really believe the bulls could have done it. Maybe they could have won after 98 if Jordan and pippen stayed 1 more year in 99 to make 4 straight

  • Greg Rowlerson
    Greg Rowlerson 3 months ago

Maybe they beat Spurs in '99, but I'd favour the Spurs. Bulls weren't that good by '98, but Jazz were also getting past their prime (as proven with subsequent seasons results), and the Pacers were probably better in '95 than in '98. By 2000 there is no chance that Chicago defeats Los Angeles, and that's if they get to the Finals. Probably a sweep; maybe Bulls win a game at home due to MJ's pride. 37 year old Jordan and 34 year old Pippen against prime Shaq & Kobe? It's not happening. Those Lakers won 67 games. 2000 Blazers were probably a stronger team than the '98 Bulls.

  • James Bradley
    James Bradley 3 months ago

History might look a little different if the Bulls stayed together for another season or 2... Would the Bulls be able to hold of A.i., Vince Carter, Ray Allen..? Would we even have the Shaq and Kobe dynasty..? Would we put Tim Duncan into the G.O.A.T conversation if he was able to take out MJ and send him into retirement..? I never count out Mike, but In a full NBA season idk if the Bulls would be able to bring down the twin towers. In a lockout season though.... I think the Bulls could have gotten another ring.

+Adam Samuel MJ's titles have asterisks all over them. Jordan couldn't win in a 23 team league. Only made it out of the 1st round once, and never got out of the 2nd round... until the NBA Expansion. Added 2 teams.. then two more... then two more lol. On top of that the league shortened the 3pt line 2 feet lol. Never won anything without Phil Jackson, and never got out of the 1st round without Scottie. Seems pretty rigged in his favor after he publicly complains to the press about Detroit being too physical and the fans don't want to see it. THEN Jordan gets 40 more calls from the refs than Detroit and starts winning titles.

    • Adam Samuel
      Adam Samuel 3 months ago

Lebron lucky to win the one. That title will always have an asterik to me and many people. The league at times feels like a fixed league with GS & Cavs winning with no other team having a chance till GS stars leave or retire.

This just goes to show you that the Bulls front office is stupid to this very day. Why on Earth would management break up a championship team that still had it in them to win? If it's about paying them more money, pay them dammit. The organization have the money to spend and the Bulls team was the most popular professional basketball team in the world at that time. They were making a bazillion dollars with the big city Chicago. But yet they are cheap and wanted to save. The Bulls could have won two more championships in addition to the six if management hadn't breaking up the team after the season. The Bulls could have won as many as 10 championship if Jordan didn't retire the first time. The idiot John Paxson, Vice President of the Bulls and who was also part of the Bulls 3peat dynasty, you would think would have the brains to keep the team at least competitive through the post Jordan era. He is known to fire the coaches he hires on Christmas Day when they are losing. Got into a shuffling match wit ex Bulls coach Vinnie Del Negro. Look at where the Bulls team record is now. He rehires shit coach Jim Boylan in which the players hate. They are Bullshit team now and that's no Bull.

Revisionist history is hilarious. The fact is Michael Jordan severed tendons in his index finger while playing with a cigar cutter, & he said it was still bothering him a year later. He wouldn’t have been at full strength. And Phil Jackson said he was done, & wouldn’t come back no matter what. So, how would an older team with no Phil & an injured Jordan have done it?

Answer to Rachel’s question at 2:53 mark. YES. Spurs beat Knicks in strike shortened season in ‘99. Bulls would have beaten them. In total.....had MJ not retired in ‘93 you would add Hakeem and Clyde to list of players MJ prevented from tasting a championship in 94, and 95. Then ‘99 Bulls would have won 9 straight.
