The irony is, this current and ongoing balkanization of the streaming services by greedy rights-holders could well lead to the collapse of the streaming industry, as well. And...then...what? I kind of want to jokingly say that physical rental places could return, but let's be honest, that's pretty damn unlikely, but...what?

There is a blockbuster still active in my area, granted they have some huge competition with the Family Video.
Which is weird, according to this video there is only 1 in existence, maybe it finally gave up.

There is not one but two family videos in my hometown somehow still in business . Also does anyone remember video update?

Streaming started in 2008. If video streaming had been kickstarted in '99, imagine what sort of shows could have been created or saved, since they wouldn't have to live at the whims of cable companies.
*We could have had Pushing Daisies season 3*

Partnering with enron was doomed from the start. Their executives were telling lies and manipulating their "products" which was really nothing to grab up as much money as possible as quick as possible before people found out. Enron really screwed over not just blockbuster but a lot of the American economy too. They're are documentaries to watch pretty interesting.

In Blockbuster’s defense, running fiber optic cables is expensive when you’re talking about running as many as they would have needed to maintain a useful business presence. Fiber optics cables have to be put underground, especially in urban settings. They would either be in the way, or someone would try to steal them. This would result in Blockbuster either paying or having customers pay for electrical crews to run the cables. In the end, they would have just lost money and died out for quickly. Filling for bankruptcy was their best choice after all. Sad really...

The horror movie section of Blockbuster would creep me out as a kid because 90% of all VHS horror movie covers either have : a monster, a menacing face, blood, knives, sharp teeth or claws, disembodied body parts or skulls; basically most if not all of Children's instinctive fears.

oh and that goddamn dancing clown.

Yeah, no. The video streaming service from Enron was hot garbage. Their ideas might have been fine, but what actually came out was a fat turd. You had to download the whole movie, then you had to go to your computer and watch it. Then you couldn't download another movie until you deleted the other one through their app or whatever. It was essentially a rental service.

  • Tin Can

blockbuster and movie theaters were quite close to eachother, in the atmosphere atleast, which made them a huge hit against other rental stores at the time, i remember the atmosphere in blockbuster smelling like cheap plastic cases and cheap snacks, not quite as much as cheap snacks as the theaters, but i remember childhood being, cheap plastic smell meaning entertainment at my fingertips. and cheap snacks meaning buttery popcorn and satisfaction at the theaters. but in the early-mid 2000s, the internet was still not so eager to instantly deliver you legally aquired content easily, and illegal content was not legally aquireable through streaming services that get knocked for it instead of you like now, which is pretty much the norm now, you can watch pirated movies legally by using a streaming site, since its on their hands. torrenting id be hard pressed to do since well..... it takes time and seeders, and is just a risk im not willing to take unless im trying it infeatureless mode, considering the risk of paying a good 2 days paycheck into some most likely garbage game. but it all goes back, i feel not quite nostaligic thinking about it, but more disturbed how disconnected the internet (as much as im an avid user of it) has made entertainment a more private thing, rather than social. and in general this seems to be the thing, everyone wants their own corner now.... and even i do. which is weird thinking back, but i was also more restricted in my selection. blockbuster drove that i suppose, the feel of it being more like a venue, than a store or rental shop.
