Civet POOP Coffee - Kopi Luwak | Is the most EXPENSIVE coffee up to the hype?

  • Published on Aug 11, 2019
  • Why is kopi luwak or civet coffee the most expensive? Every bean has passed through the digestive system of a Asian palm civet and then collected in its #poop. The beans were then washed and roasted, ready to be made into a cup of #coffee. Here we go!
Big thanks to Simon who sent me the kopi luwak and made this episode possible - thank you!

Hi emmy! Your indonesian fan here..i'm glad you enjoyed Kopi Luwak from my country. I'm double glad you get the Kopi beans from sustainable (no chivet forced/harmed) one. Even for indonesian, kopi luwak really expensive. I'm only taste twice, it's a bit acidic but i like it, it gives me a punch for a day (i like arabica coffee too). Terima Kasih Emmy!😀

Emmy, I work at a small coffee shop in Idaho. We roast all our own beans, would you like to try some? Most of ours are very light roasts, and respond nicely to pour over! I can send you a couple of our favourites!

never always believe what you read on a label, most of the time its put there so humans don't have to face the fact that animals are actually harmed, I say to everyone do your research first.

PS It was a “filler” used in coffee to round it out in lean times. Popular in poorer communities. Especially the South. Hence its popularity in NOLA. I’ve tried it. Even in the French Quarter with beignets it’s horrible.

The civet code may have looked creamier because of the French press. I've always noticed French pressed coffee like cloudier. I used to work at a coffee shop where we occasionally used them.

    Carter Chambers: Read it.

Edward Cole: [reading] Kopi Luwak is the world's most expensive coffee. Though for some, it falls under the category of "too good to be true." In the Sumatran village, where the beans are grown, lives a breed of wild tree cat. These cats eat the beans, digest them and then... defecate.

Edward Cole: The villagers then collect and process the stools. It is the combination of the beans and the gastric juices of the tree cat that give Kopi Luwak...

    [Carter starts laughing]

Edward Cole: ...its unique flavor... and aroma. You're shitting me!

Carter Chambers: [laughing] Cats beat me to it!

I've heard of a lot of awful mistreatment of civets, it's very sad that these companies get away with abusing hundreds and thousands of civets with little to no government overseeing.

I feel like with such an expensive coffee you should invest in quality equipment or be extra prepared and careful. It would be worth it for extra quility. I would understand if you filmed after you brewed. For a cook like me, I would need a watch and a thermometer. Id get the water at the right temperature right as I finished grinding so it would be extremely fresh. Like you can tell the difference between pour over and French press. Im surprised that you dont have a tea kettle. You dif very well with what you have. Hopefully you can get better tools.

You don't eat the ducky moss for coffee tasting?

CHARMAINE HARN 21 day ago +1

In the Philippines, we call it Alamid Coffee. Yes it is expensive. I have tasted a cup before and it is milder in flavor. I think it is the kind of coffee that you taste just once or maybe twice in yoir life just for experience. Otherwise I definitely prefer Ifugao coffee over all other coffee variants available because every sip is just delightful! 😍 Im not from the northern region but I prefer their coffee much better than the strong coffee we usually get in the south.

Emmy, you should try Peet’s Arabian Mocha Sanani or Ethiopian Moka Harrar - they don’t always have one or the other available, but they both are pure moka/mocha (the mocha part of mocha-java blends, nothing to do with the chocolate added to so-called “caffe mocha” or “mocha latte” sweet barista drinks). Even Peet’s mocha-java blend is outstanding. If you want a smooth, less acidic, less bitter coffee that only costs $17-$24/lb ($17 for mocha-java, $24 for mocha sanani), you cannot find a better example. You seem to like dark roasts so give Peet’s a try, especially the mochas, they do a terrific dark roast and pick terrific beans. Another very smooth, non-bitter variety they have is Uzuri. MUCH cheaper than kopi luwak.

My friend's French press kinda definitely exploded while he was using it. It cut through his hand and after all was said and done he had permanent nerve damage. So he can't really move a finger well. That finger almost fell off though... That's what I think about every time I see a French press :D
