Jerry Seinfeld on Julia Louis-Dreyfus & "Seinfeld" | 2018 Mark Twain Prize

  • Published on Nov 19, 2018
  • Jerry Seinfeld honors Julia Louis-Dreyfus during the 21st Annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at The Kennedy Center. An outstanding lineup of entertainers gathered in the Kennedy Center Concert Hall to salute Julia Louis-Dreyfus, recipient of the 21st annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor on October 21, 2018. The Prize, which is named to honor one of the world's greatest humorists, was presented at a gala performance featuring some of the biggest names in comedy. The event was taped by WETA Washington, D.C. and aired nationally on PBS on November 19, 2018 at 9:00 p.m. ET. Capital One is the Presenting Sponsor of Comedy at the Kennedy Center.
Under the direction of the creative team from Done + Dusted, the Kennedy Center’s new producing partner for the Twain Prize, the cast features many of Louis-Dreyfus’s admirers, friends, and collaborators, including Stephen Colbert, Bryan Cranston, Tina Fey, Ilana Glazer, Tony Hale, Abbi Jacobson, Jack Johnson, Keegan-Michael Key, Lisa Kudrow, Kumail Nanjiani, and Jerry Seinfeld.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus earned worldwide acclaim for her portrayal of Elaine Benes in the hit NBC series "Seinfeld," and as Christine Campbell in the CBS hit comedy "The New Adventures of Old Christine." She currently stars in, and executive produces, the HBO series "Veep," which will soon begin its seventh season.
Between all shows combined, she has received eleven Emmy awards (six consecutively for "Veep") with twenty-four nominations, a Golden Globe award, nine Screen Actors Guild awards which makes her the most decorated actor in the history of the SAG awards, three Television Critics Association awards, five American Comedy Awards, a Peabody Award, and the Charlie Chaplin Britannia Award for Excellence in Comedy. She has broken the record for the most Emmy's won by a single performer, as well as the most consecutive wins for a single role ("Veep").

Seinfeld has some sadness or depression or anger what about dissatisfaction maybe over powered ego or selfishness or........ well whatever Seinfeld has is considered normal human characteristics. But, why is Seinfeld identifying these to us in front of the world? Is there a normal human, that you know, who will enjoy to show their negativity?

I never considered this until watching this speech... Elaine was the MVP... I always gave George the credit, but Elaine made it work. If JLD is bad, Seinfeld doesn't finish Season 1.

    • O B
      O B 13 days ago

Admittedly I've considered the former a bit longer and you're absolutely right on both counts. MVP is a good descriptor. And Season 1 is a premature bust without her. So many of the best bits/jokes in the show involved her directly. Also, I know Veep blah blah...but if one really loves her and hasn't yet, they need to watch every episode of The New Adventures of Old Christine. Another of the funniest shows ever and SOLELY because of her (yet it's also got a wonderful and worthy cast).

    🏆👍 Congratulations to Julia Louis-Dreyfus!
    👁 ❤ Jerry's speech.
A lot of people (including Jerry) say that Jerry is either a lousy actor or no actor at all. Go ahead & call me crazy if u c fit, but I just don't agree. He might have a narrow range, but I think that he is terrific within that range.
Do I think that he is qualified to play Hamlet, Romeo, King Lear, Othello, Cymbeline, or Willy Loman? Not necessarily. I guess he would have to try in order for us to confirm yay or nay. However, it is my opinion that he was the perfect person to play Jerry on _Seinfeld._ So even if his entire range is just one character, then that's fine by me. I haven't yet seen _Bee Movie,_ so I can't yet judge his voice acting in that role.
Now one might say that I am stating a tautology; that is, you might say that of course Jerry could play Jerry because he was just playing himself. Well that's only partly true. _Seinfeld_ was a scripted sitcom; 'twas not a reality show. His character was based on him, but it was a fictionalized version of the man. Forgive me if this all goes without saying and I'm over-'splaining this point.

They ARE the some of the best best entertainers. When it comes to CREATING and having a sense of humor...they win. For preforming entertainers, blacks hav that hands down. Look at Sanford and Son - a ghetto comedy, WRITTEN, PRODUCED and DIRECTED by Whitey...and at the helm, a fucking AMAZING performer who can do it all. THAT'S why that shit's classic. Chico and the Man? Good Times. The Jeffersons. Gimme a Break. Amos and Andy, THE COSBY SHOW, family matters, Martin, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, The PJ's, Diff'rent Strokes, Welcome Back Kotter....nah they don't let anyone in. That's like the reverse of the Brooklyn 99 chick tweeting about the first four directors signed out of sundance are women...YAY. Who cares? ARE THEY ANY GOOD? WILL they be good in the mainstream, etc.. What if they SUCK lol? Isn't the ability to see TALENT in people (of ANY color) worth anything anymore? You just get it without really trying? Maybe that's why everything sucks now is all backed by greed. When the Jews were running it - FUNNY was FUNNY. Now all you get is PISS, SHIT & PUKE in movies...WTF this world's immature fascination with that crap is I'll never know. Comedy is dead and the Jews DIDN'T kill it. Take your anti-semitic dick and shove up your fucking ass, then reach down your throat (FAR with that little dick), yank it out and slap yourself across the face with it. Shalom, bitch!

Absolute perfect speech by Jerry. Julia Louis-Dreyfus definitely #1 sitcom actor of all time. How many emmys? 8 ? --And she's won for every show she's ever done. She's the Tom Brady of sitcoms. Even MORE successful than Tom Brady

    • dan fred
      dan fred Month ago

MORE successful than Tom Brady?!? More successful than Tom Brady... *sigh* You absolute goon. Julia was born rich. She was born into a family more wealthy than 99.9% of people on Earth. She was on SNL. She was already on tv. She already had the world by the balls by virtue of where and when she was born. It also wasn't her show. She didn't have to Produce. She didn't have to write it. She had little to no say so in any of its' inner workings. Tom Brady has won more Super Bowls than any other Quarterback in the entire history of Football. Over 100 years of Football games, and not one other person alive, or who has ever lived, can say that. Julia acted on a tv show she had nothing else to do with... It's people like you who really scare me. Weirdo sycophants. Letting emotion override facts. The world has enough people like you already, we don't need anymore.

The angry yelling I think maybe he picked up from Jerry Stiller, and with neither of them was it very funny for very long..

JLD has been part of some funny shows - "SNL," "Seinfeld," "Veep" - but I wouldn't credit her particularly for the entertainment of those productions. "SNL" in her time was the Eddie Murphy and Joe Piscopo show (and I think she overlapped with Billy Crystal and Chris Guest, too). "Veep" was funny due to Mike McClintock, Jonah Ryan, and Gary Walsh, not the Vice-President turned President. And I have laughed more at Frank Costanza, Newman, Uncle Leo et al. than Elaine.
