  • With anxiety, stress, and sleep dysfunction skyrocketing around the globe, it's time we look at the unspoken reasons why. These debilitating challenges can be meaningfully impacted with ten to twenty minutes of breathing exercises per day. Max Strom, who has taught breath-work for 20 years, reveals his insights into the healing power of the breath.
Max Strom teaches personal transformation, mindfulness, and yoga worldwide and is known for inspiring and impacting the lives of his students. His Inner Axis method addresses the internal aspects of our life and our potential for physical and emotional healing. He is the author of "A Life Worth Breathing," and, "There is No App for Happiness."
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

First of all , the voice is amazing. Shouldn't air be entering and exiting the body through proper channels i.e. nostrils, the perfect apparatus which filters and regulates the air temp. and then to send it into lungs. What I'm practicing and learnt is: Put your hands on your tummy, breathe in, your tummy bulges out and then hold it (breath) for 2 seconds and gently breathe out through nose ,you'll feel your tummy subsiding. This can also check snoring problem. Is breathing through mouth some different technique which I'm not aware of ? Please guide, Thanks

WOW. I was doing a breathing exercise while listing to this and when he told the story about the CEO losing his brother I started balling for the first time in months. I've been suffering from Exploding Head Syndrome and Chronic Sympathetic Arousal for a long time and I think I've finally found the key. I must train myself to breathe through my nose and into my belly while I sleep. How? I'm all ears (and nose). Thank you so much for this video and my revelation!

What a fascinating topic that can help many people here. Like many of us, I have also been in an unhealthy situation due to negative energy forced into me by so-called caretakers in early life. However, over the last 10 years I have been getting rid of it by using a breathing technique called recapitulation. This involves mentally putting yourself into the situations of your past and intentionally breathing out feelings (energy) others have put into you and breathing in energy that you've lost. You may want to randomly breathe through feelings as they come up. Human beings are essentially energy bodies with “filaments” of energy - some of which are foreign. The goal is to clean up your energy. It may seem rather abstract, and for me it has been a constant intense battle; but the healing has been tremendous, changing me and bringing joy back into my life. Try it!

Jump forward to 14:00 to learn one of the breathing techniques he teaches. And I find it poor advice. Breathing in to expand the ribs outwards, is not going to help and heal. It is relaxed, belly (diaphragmatic) breathing that truly relaxes, lowers the stress response. I have taught this to many many of my patients, and I've seen blood pressure drop from 200/100 down to 130/80 in just minutes. Just the other day I had a man come in with a BP of 170/90. I said to him, I've never said this in the 25 years I've known you, but do this: just relax, smile, gently make yourself smile, imagine your whole body is radiating a smile. He did. In 4 minutes his BP was 130/80. So it is NOT JUST BREATHING technique. It will take an attitude of relaxation, letting go, and above all, gentle belly breathing. I call it a "baby belly breath": just look at a baby, they only breathe through their bellies. Then they get older, get stressed, then they start using the ribs. I've been an Internist for 40 years, studied yoga, chi kung, and so on. I hope you will experiment for yourselves and learn that what I am saying is the truth. Oh, here's another secret I've taught to many people: gentle diaphragmatic breathing helps alleviate acid reflux!

So great!! We will get through this together!! So powerful! One critique though, we aren’t supposed to be mouth breathers. Breathing through the mouth initiates the flight or fight response. Deep nasal breathing is the calming meditative breath. Love this tedtalk though. Crying and working through grief is super important to good health.

In my opinion, there is too much force, focus, and rigidity in this method. Instead, I use an old pre-meditation breath: Breathe out, then in, through one nostril, then change to out, then in, through the other nostril. Use finger or thumb, to close inactive nostril. Deep, slow, no force, no abruptness. This cyclic, circular breath can be deeply calming and relaxing.
As the French say, each to his own. Use whatever works for you.

    My take:
    1.
    Breathing exercise:
    1) Seat straight (off a backrest)
    2) Put your hands to your ribs (at the sides)
    3) When you inhale, make your ribs go out to the sides (not upfront)
    4) When exhale, sit taller
    5) Do a 4-7-8 breathing
Inhale for the count of four
    Hold for seven
    Exhale for 8
    2.
    When someone is in grief:
    1) Don’t try to cheer them up
    2) Say: it’s gonna hurt really bad for a while and I’m not going anywhere, I’m here. This year it’s your turn, next year it might be my turn. We’ll all get through this together.
