Bong Joon-ho 봉준호 : Expect the Unexpected | PARASITE | TIFF 2019

  • Published on Oct 23, 2019
  • A glorious success and smashing box-office hit for Korean auteur Bong Joon-ho - who returns home after his foreign adventures in Snowpiercer and Okja - the Palme d'Or-winning Parasite is a politically charged cinematic wonder.
Described by Bong himself as "a comedy without clowns and a tragedy without villains," the film moves quickly from one tone to another, mixing pathos and satire with thrills and drama, in a perfectly controlled blend of many different genres.
A vertical story of class struggle - punctuated by staircase scenes going from mouldy basements to top floors, from darkness to breezy spaces designed by star architects - Parasite observes and dissects with surgical precision the life of two families of different social backgrounds.
Ki-taek (Song Kang-ho) is a good-for-nothing, unemployed family man, patriarch of a family of derelicts - his wife Chung-sook (Chang Hyae-jin), his clever twenty-something daughter Ki-jung (Park So-dam), and his son Ki-woo (Choi Woo-shik) - who live in an overcrowded, sordid basement. The Parks, on the other hand, live in a fabulous house with their teenage daughter Da-hye and terribly spoiled son Da-song, who has suffered a childhood trauma that occasionally causes him seizures and strange behaviour. When, due to an unexpected stroke of luck, Ki-woo is hired by the Parks to be the private English tutor of Da-hye, the destinies of the two families cross. Their explosive meeting exposes the merciless evils of class inequalities, culminating in a powerful and utterly original outcome.

    "Bong Joon-ho is a genre"
I honestly love when the genre conventions are broken, and I loved what he had to say about that. People have an idea of what a film should be, but honestly, a film should surprise you, and no films surprises me more than the ones of this director.
Btw, if anyone is looking for something similar to the "Bong Joon-ho genre", I'd HIGHLY recommend Netfli'xs Maniac. Is honestly the only american thing I've ever seen that plays with genre as much as Bong does. Gotta hand it to Cary Fukunga. He made the most genre bending series I've ever seen, and he also knows how to make good use of symbolism. Honestly, if you enjoy Bong's cinema, I highly suggest you watch Maniac

I watched this movie last week and this was an amazing movie. I felt very sad after the movie was over and had lots of comicated feeling in my head. There are alot of metaphors and symbolism and it is a universal story so regardless of ethnic, cultural, or national background, everyone can relate to the story. It is a briliant movie. I think Director Bong is a genius

I watched Parasite this past week and the seats were almost sold out I think, judging by the number of seats filled. I barely knew anything about the film so I went in with only the slightest idea of what to expect.
It truly defies genres. There's comedy, drama, and an unexpected genre that might spoil it so I can't write it here lol. I don't think I've ever seen any film like it.
The social commentary was presented in a way that was equal parts entertaining and profound. A really unique way of depicting social problems, I gotta say.
The climax was....certainly not what I expected. But it was good (even if it was hard for me to watch).
Let's just I went out of the theatre feeling deeply unsettled by that to the point where I had some trouble sleeping.
I loved one of the director's previous movies, Snowpiercer, but I didn't know it was by the same director. But now that I've been made aware I'm not surprised Parasite was so good.

    • HoneyHo
      HoneyHo 22 days ago

Insanity! I really like Bong, but I've seen zero evidence of the "genius" that so many phony critics spew whenever his name comes up. "The Host" was a quite silly, moderately enjoyable B-movie monster flick. It was a cross between Ultraman and a Roger Corman movie. "Snowpiercer" had some amazingly composed scenes but the beginning was just paint-by-numbers Hollywood schlock and the ending was indecipherable convoluted garbage. Perhaps "Parasite" is some evidence of his "genius" but so far I've seen nothing as complex or finished as Park Chan- Wook's "Old Boy", out of Bong.
