UPDATE : I just posted a video of yet ANOTHER song that uses this trick: "Small Town" by John Mellencamp. Check it out here: ru-clip.com/video/EKGVRA6nZss/video.html
Here's how to take your 3 favorite chords and turn them into something SPECIAL! So many songwriters and bands have employed the trick found here, and you can't really play a lot of famous tunes WITHOUT this technique. it's a MUST for your Bag of Tricks! It's not that it's hard - it's EASY but you wouldn't think to do this D-C-G Trick without someone showing you. So it's a quick way to sound pro, and to learn a handful of famous tunes in the process. This D-C-G Trick has been used by acoustic AND electric guitar players, both with fingerpicking and flatpicking. If you can play your basic D C and G chords these might even feel easier. But these modified chords have a different musical tone than the standard D, C, and G and that's the trick! **ALERT: there are a few times in the video when the acoustic guitar takes on a sweet distorted tone which was unintentional, but delightful. Please don't email me to let me know, ok ? Thanks.

I wrote acapella for about 25 years, began guitar in my 50's , then in the swing of things, had no time or energy to play from my wife battling and loosing to cancer, then 2 years after, I'm nearly crushed to death in a 70 thousand pound mixer roll over up side down, now 11 months after all that, still in a Lot of pain, I stumble upon your youtube stuff. You have been a huge blessing in helping me get my mojo back, thanks so much

I thought " All D chords are Four String Chords" Only -- Not Five Strings.

    • Song Bike - jkehew1
Song Bike - jkehew1  Month ago

Good point, Robert! Most of us teachers teach beginners to play D using 4 strings only. If you include the 5th string (A) the sound is great but the name changes to D/A (a D major chord with A as the lowest note.) But feel free to include it at your discretion!

too many people confuse technical ability with talent, true talent is using the most basic chords over and again to create inspirational heartfelt original songs, neil young, the eagles and john mellencamp just to name a few are all arists whose songs are easy to play for beginners because they use basic open chords, but now lets see you using the same chords write something as moving as any of them...i'm not saying technical ability isn't a skill but that innovation and genuine passion are the real foundations of talent ,any parrot can be taught to mimic words but try and find one to come up with poetry to match baudelaire or rimbaud..i'll take ramones over malmsteen every time

His guitar looks like a Martin D28. It has a wonderful jingle and deep body sound. You can try a dozen of these guitars and not one would sound the same.I don't know why that is but when I go into a guitar store I take my pick and just pluck one string usually the A string. You can tell right away what kind of quality the guitar has. I do this with a bunch of guitars all models and you would be amazed at how different each one is even the same model and make of guitar and even at different prices. I bough an classical model acoustic guitar 30 years ago for $100.00 and it is unbelievable. always perfectly in tune and a wonderful sound. So guys and gals let your ears buy your guitar.

About 01:44 he advises avoiding the thickest string when strumming your D chord. I would go one further - avoid the TWO thickest strings and instead aim to have the third thickest string (tuned to the note D) as your 'bass' string. That second thickest string, the A string, CAN technically fit into a D chord (it's the fifth note of the D scale) but it is better to have your bass note as the same letter as the chord you are playing. So aim to only strum 4 thinnest strings when playing D chords.

Just realized something is 'off' on your Hard Day's Night chords... so I sat down and "fingered it out" (as my 80 year-old teacher used to say). The song begins ringing that dissonant sounding D7sus4 chord. Also the second chord you play here is incorrect -- if you use the open high E, that's what Harrison played. Here's the first verse:
    D7sus4 .....
    G Cadd9 G
    It's been a hard day's night
    F6 G
And I've been working like a dog.
    G Cadd9 G
    It's been a hard day's night,
    F6 G
I should be sleeping like a log.

what I love about the numerous comments on this from your early beginnings as the fact that people tried to be dicks and rile you up in the comments and you're just like yeah whatever I know it's the quality of it is what it is enjoy it if not see you that was what so cool that made me subscribe congratulations on the over a hundred thousand subs way to go..Wish I Still trucked up Interstate 95 when I used to do the full 48 States and Canada up till about 6 years ago you're busy corner sounds really cool I saw that I like small little music stores like that..Now only mainly run Chicago and Wisconsin to the southeast and Texas pretty much now after almost 30 years used to love an out there around Old saybrook but I used to haul out of General Dynamics out by Mystic Connecticut was always a cool place to run back in the day and that whole area out there very cool.🎶🎸🎤 started getting back in the guitar a little heavier about mm 13 about 5 years of learning how to play again after almost a 14-year low it's been fun I play when I can have a little small couple uploads on my RU-clip channel not real fancy playing though just mainly for fun.. Great video. Have not played in a long, long, time. Remember learning very basic Gordon Lightfoot patterns and tricks like these. Best part for me was when you addressed the right hand. Everyone's focus is always left hand fingering but it is the right hand that makes the sound. I am always wanting to see the right - is it a pick; a plectrum, a fingernail? Where does it start? What is the sequence? That would be very helpful. Like your style.

my pinkey absolutly can not press that 1st string in your G cord. It will not move down and can't apply pressure to that string with my hand in that position. How the hell is your ring finger not touching that 5 string? My ring finger can not do this with out touching that 5 string. The tip just won't bend enough, but it's bent as much as yours, and yours some how not touching and mine is.
This is super discouraging. Even when I take my right hand and try to place the fingers in position, the pinkey has zero strength to apply pressure to the string, and that ring finger hits 5 string.
I don't want to discover things I am not capable of doing, I want this to work. WTF man

    • Song Bike - jkehew1
      Song Bike - jkehew1  6 months ago

I know, I know, I know. Hang in there ! First of all, do NOT judge your overall progress on your ability to place this form of G. It's just a thing, ok ? There are millions of EASIER things on the guitar that will bring you a lot of satisfaction. 99.9% of my students fell the exact way you do. Believe it or not, you'll find a way to do it with practice. But I know it's a pain. Our ring and pinky fingers are the weakest and least coordinated so any guitar "thing" that relies on those 2 fingers needs a LOT of practice. Hang in there !!!
