Finnegan's Garage Ep.60: Blowouts, Rusty Gas Tanks and The World's Longest Ramp Truck!

  • Published on Jan 14, 2019
  • I'm calling this a ramp truck because if you open up the roll-up door, inside the 24-foot long cargo box is a pair of ramps to park a car on. Also, to load the car atop the truck you have to drive it up...drum roll please...ramps. lol.
Anyway, in Episode 59 of Finnegan's Garage, David Newbern and I flew to Cincinnati to buy this 1989 GMC Sierra 3500 truck, which had been converted for race car hauling duty way back in 1990. We probably paid too much for this pig but with only 35,000 original miles on the odometer she needed no lipstick. There's hardly a scratch on this truck and although she broke down almost immediately and we spent 7 hours on the side of the road in the rain, we still love her even if we don't have much love for the seller.
This video gives you a great look into what it was like making the journey from Indiana to Georgia and all the fun we had meeting fans and battling a dead battery, rusty fuel tanks and sketchy tires.

FULL ON Roadkill moment for sure. A little truckers tip. Road flares are cheaper than batteries and brighter than hazards!!!!. Never leave home without a box on a long pull trip. Get them out on the highway a bit,,say 10" over the fog line and into the lane. Keep an eye on them in the dry.

I paided 3500 for and 86 elco my FIRST car i was 17 my dad and i got to pick it up. I saw it once before and drove it before i decided. Seller was an older guy who wanted to get rid of it. I specifically asked him if it was safe enough to drive home and he said yes. He said he was driving it. Car was clean and drove nice. Well long story short on my way home. Front brake line broke going down a hill no less and lost all brakes and my car got totaled. Never got my car home. So, do i sympathize with Mike, yes. I Will never trust sellers anymore. Yes 3500 doesnt sound like a lot to most of u older people but for someone working min wage job on top of my lawn buisness. A lot of time and work went into getting that car.

A redneck fix is to fill the windscreen washer bottle with fuel, (purge the water - obvsly) and then run the washer line to the carb.
This is obviously not a long term fix, but might get you over the bridge, or to a hotel, spare parts shop ... etc...
best to have the passenger on fuel detail. a couple of seconds on the washer switch at a time.

cool truck. It has an instrument cluster like one in an earlier diesel truck, judging by the rectangle between the speedo and gas gauge... In my truck, this is where the glow plug light and "water in fuel " light is on a diesel... I had an 82 Suburban 6.2 diesel with this. I put over 300k on it. You wouldnt have had the fuel issues with a 6.2. Just no power. but it would have never quit... BTW, if the truck had overdrive, it would be indicated on the gear indicator. I don't think GM put the 700r4 in a truck with this high of a gvwr. It was weak in a half ton. Gear Vendor is the way to go here! The 6.2 mentioned previously destroyed three (!) in its lifetime! Also, the 82 and newer trucks had the sloped hood and wrapped springs that didnt bend. The actual "Square body with flat hood and coil springs would break at a factory pinch point and bend the hood.

Easiest way to rewind cassette tapes is with the old cheap bic blue-cap ink pens. They'd wedge in perfectly. We didn't have these modern electric drill thingys back in them days, so you had to turn the inkpen with your teeth! Now, VHS tapes was a differn't story, you needed a large man's thumb, thet's what we called it back then. It's really just a big fat thumb. Attached, or not, didn't really matter much, as long as the hangnail hit the tooth on the spool, you could tighten it back up. As we all know, too many viewings without a fast forward to end/rewind, the tape gets wobbles up and down, usually because of pauses in the sexy parts (or so Ah've been told). The drive and the tensioner weren't all that synchronized. Same thing with cassettes. We didn't have that problem with 8-tracks nearly as much. 8-track eating players, that was still a thing.

Well, on a positive note, you didn't have to source 16.5 tires for the earlier style 1 ton rims. Gotta feeling that seller knew full well that fuel system was pooched and hoped you would well down the highway before it plugged up again. Might want to get the new tanks ceramic coated, they will last longer now the fuel contain ethanol. If you are gonna have more down time than drive time, I would coat them as that ethanol blend crap goes bad fast. Hell before installing them get bungs welded in each one so you can drain the tanks for extended periods. Why it got a Diesel fuel dash bezel?

  • Darrell Perkins

Well anyone buying a truck that old with that few miles on it should plan on some mechanical issues especially with fuel and tires, that being said if I sold that truck for 20k and he only made it 8 miles before being broke down I would have done everything in my power to help him get back on the road, probably would even asked what he thought was fair. It's not hard to be a decent human being. great video as always Mike, if I'd have known you were in cincy I coulda brought you a 55 gallon drum and spare pump I had laying around

And why say mint truck if the batteries almost done and tanks were garbage... i don’t know how most of you people do business but if someone were to mistreat me like that i would ask for a refund and they can take their truck back off of the highway themselves hahahaha!
