  • 'Deep work' will make you better at what you do. You will achieve more in less time. And feel the sense of true fulfillment that comes from the mastery of a skill.
Cal Newport is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Georgetown University. In addition to studying the theoretical foundations of our digital age, Newport also writes about the impact of these technologies on the world of work. His most recent book, Deep Work, argues that focus is the new I.Q. in the modern workplace and that the ability to concentrate without distraction is becoming increasingly valuable. He previously wrote So Good They Can’t Ignore You, a book which debunks the long-held belief that “follow your passion” is good advice, and three popular books of unconventional advice for students.

I wish my boys were growing up in a world where adults actually paid attention to them, and didn’t always send the message that they (my children) aren’t as interesting as what’s going on on their phones. They must always feel devalued.
I believe this is the first generation to practically completely raise themselves because of it ..... not by choice but by necessity.

It’s distracting from every day life. When you’re out enjoying yourself and in your mind you pause to post what you’re doing online, there is a problem. It’s taken away our ability to stay conscious in a moment.

Gossip and narcissism are the two pillars of Facebook and Instagram. Social media is not only a waste of time, but it also spoils human mind. Way better spend your leisure time reading a good book or walking in the woods, if you can afford it.

I only have an LinkedIn account that is more or less a shell, no photo and little content. I keep my fingers crossed that the day when the only way to validate a person is from his/her social media account will never be true. Anyone wants to find me on line will not find a social media account with history and time line.

I used to be addicted to facebook, texting mostly and then people would unlike me be busy with something and I would just stare at the screen waiting for reply. Now I'm not addicted, I just chat someone up when I need to and scroll through it once a day see if there's funny memes or something, but then I says a few of those people bragging about their lives how much fun they have going places and it bums me up a little. Yeah I'm gonna stop using it now completely.

as a freshman in high school, social media is a huge part of my life. I spend over 5 hours on it everyday after school and although I know it is affecting my grades and social life, I can't stop. Today, I've been watching many of these youtube videos and realized that its not too late to change. I deleted all my social media apps just a few hours ago and I will be trying that for the next 30 days. I know this is going to be really difficult and tempting but I don't want to spend my life staring at a damn screen. If anyone sees this comment, I'll update you in 30 days:)

I watched this video a few months back and it made me really think how social media was making me feel. I decided to give up social media one at a time first instagram then facebook then snapchat. If anyone reading this comment wants to learn from what I learned over the past few months is you will be happier without it. Give all your close friends your number to call you or send you a text. You won't be left out. Delete all the accounts one by one and watch your life slowly become more peaceful happy and relaxing.

Honestly I quit most social media a long time ago .. well most of it anyway. I still use WhatsApp or Skype to video chat with friends and family that live outside of the states, also I use instagram solely for marketing purposes, and Pinterest, but other than that I hardly waste my time on it. RU-clip is the platform I spend time on recreationally. I never considered it to be a social media site at all. I don't use it to communicate with others. I use it as an alternative to live tv. I remember when RU-clip first came about. I saw it as a way to be creative to post my short films and creations for the world to see. It's a creative medium not a social networking site.

I had a MySpace. I enjoyed it. I used it primarily for finding new music before it died off. Then I had a Facebook around 2007 or 2008. People were using it to see how many people would like what they say. It was like they were using it to validates their lives. It was pretty bazaar.

That's big time true lol. The first time I deleted all my social media accounts 2 years ago, it forced me to actually socialize and approach people (big time introvert and pretty quiet guy here). I got my crush's number and she literally stopped texting me when I told her I dont use social media anymore 😂. That I deleted all my accounts. Not trying to talk bad about her, but shes not worth keeping if she doesnt wanna talk to you over something as little as that. Start approaching and eventually you'll get right imo.

I am considering shutting down my social media for goo. I find myself coming home from work and somehow sitting down at the computer and checking my social media to see if I have any likes or not. I find that my mind wonders with random thought even frustration and confusion. so I spent a few day without it. I shut down my Ipad for 7 days. and I want to get my emails off of my phone. AS a musician , worship leader ,singer, song writer, I find myself asking this question... can God promote my music without social media? what an absurd thought!!! of course He can!

  • Imani Dlamini
Imani Dlamini 14 days ago +1

    So in nutshell he says:
    - Social Media has no real function. It’s like a slot machine for your brain
    - You do not need Social Media for your career: the market rewards people who can produce things of value
    - Social Media can permanently diminish your attention span

For me personally: I do agree with what he says!!! I go on social media detoxes every now and then where I’ll delete Instagram for a month and then come back on. Social media can be fun - like sharing the book you’re reading and connecting with a stranger online about it or seeing an inspiring story of someone who has reached their goals. So I think moderation is key - and self awareness (so that you’re not falling into the trap of comparing yourself to others or wasting time).

    • Micah Taylor
      Micah Taylor 6 days ago

I agree with you. I think theres pros and cons to it. The detoxes definitely help if you dont wanna cold Turkey quit.

I don't like how Social Media closed us from the real world. I hate how it distracts me and makes me addicted.
I use Facebook (A major social (sorta) platform) as well as RU-clip, Deviantart, Wattpad and Pinterest. Sometimes I leave the notifications stacking and don't regularly check them as I do have a life to live!
I honestly can't imagine quitting Social Media, actually. Not really because it's addictive, but I know that there's good in it that's overshadowed by the negativity and danger. I use social media to get inspired by others, lend out support and love to those that live far away from me. People who feel like they have no one that loves them, but I want to show them that there is, which is me and other people who are far away from them. I also want to bring peace too. To be the mediator and peacemaker in arguments and hopefully set a middle ground.

I recently stopped going on facebook because 90% of the posts from my "friends" are vapid and explicitly ego-feeding, but I still go on Instagram because I enjoy photography and seeing aesthetically pleasing photos. Sometimes if you follow the right accounts you regularly gain bitesized but fascinating info about useful topics. Sure, the people you follow that you know in real life may post envy-inducing pictures of them traveling all over the world, but most of the time it's just average joes or janes fishing for compliments or mundane food pics.

His argument about "fragmented attention" is the one that really got me, as I have gradually come to see how dangerous it is to take a quick peek at this, then that, etc. There have actually been some days in which I have done this so much (and commented too much to boot) that by the end of the day, my brain felt like a bunch of Goddamn scrambled eggs! In reaction to this, I made a rule that I'm only allowed to make 2 e-comments per day (this is my second and final one for today) and when going on RU-clip, for example, I PLAN what I'm actually looking for and don't just mindlessly scroll and click this, click that, etc. As for Facebook, I'm just going to ditch it for the reason given above and others.

you cannot be so dogmatic as to reject the reality that social media is integral to successful marketing in this day and age. However, I do agree that on an emotional and personal level, it can be harmful.
