  • 'Deep work' will make you better at what you do. You will achieve more in less time. And feel the sense of true fulfillment that comes from the mastery of a skill.
Cal Newport is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Georgetown University. In addition to studying the theoretical foundations of our digital age, Newport also writes about the impact of these technologies on the world of work. His most recent book, Deep Work, argues that focus is the new I.Q. in the modern workplace and that the ability to concentrate without distraction is becoming increasingly valuable. He previously wrote So Good They Can’t Ignore You, a book which debunks the long-held belief that “follow your passion” is good advice, and three popular books of unconventional advice for students.

Social media almost becomes like a second job. People are so busy deciding what to post, overthinking things, trying to keep up with the next person. That can be overwhelming.

Last night i posted one article and people, including me, were arguing back and forth.. basically trying to one-up one another and prove who is right who is wrong. Nothing but degrading comments and so on. Everything on facebook is politics now. It's almost not even a way to catch up with friends anymore, it's just mainly politics and the left and right arguing with one another. So today I woke up with a new mind and decided to deactivate and disable the whole app on my phone. I'm already feeling better. I'm starting with a 30 day challenge, then will go from there.

For a phenomenon associated with this new generation, how many people cannot quit Facebook because of their bloody PARENTS?!$%!!! I don't think people need to divorce themselves from FB, Instagram or Twitter but need to evaluate and change the way they use them. I love the points that Cal Newport raises here. I think all social media is a particular way of looking at life; it is an impressionistic look. I no longer post on FB, but I peruse it occasionally to find out if friends are playing their music somewhere if there are any entertaining pictures of young relatives growing up more quickly than I can see in real life. With Instagram, I look at it only occasionally and when I do, I look at Art, journalism stories and pictures of wildlife. With Twitter, I peruse it for indications of which news articles I might read after getting a handle on what's generally going on.

Seriously considering on quitting socail media except for deviant art I love to drawl so I can post my art but other wise I feel like we all get attached to it & see how many likes we get from it plus I feel like the more people who get more likes on a post or more followers on their Twitter or Instagram account their ego skyrockets & then puts down others that's just what I have seen on socail media platforms .

Am i the only one using FB & Instagram for shopping or window shopping lol. I dont really add my friends just using it to look for things online. Maybe i should delete so i would stop binge-shopping online. The only prob is that items sold at physical shops are limited and not as interesting as the ones i saw online. Sighs

    Social Media: it's a trap!
Nothing stops anyone from leaving Social Media other than a lie or many lies. I truly believe that.
eg. You won't be able to connect, you'll miss out, others will look down on you, you couldn't handle it, you'd be bored, fill in da blank.

I'm not saying Social Media is inately bad, but I am saying I am free without it.

I respect this guy so much. I can attest the fact that life without social media yields such a peace. I've recently gone back on because I'm a musician but going back to the "old school" way of marketing and promotion while having someone else manage my social media accounts is not a bad idea. We have to imagine what would happen if it were all taken away in an instant. What would be left standing. I would challenge anyone to go without it for 6 months just to at least know the difference. Great speech and I hope that Cal continues to educate this younger generation.

As Douglas Adams would say.... "Mostly harmless, mostly." I'm 26 and have been off of Facebook since age 21, never had a Twitter account, and this year I logged out of Instagram and deleted the app. Baby steps. I have so much more time and peace of mind. I'm not worried about others or comparing myself to them. Less stress and anxiety. My social media fix is education through books and talks like this.

I haven’t used any social media since my son was born. He’s about to turn two. I agree with his points but there’s countless reasons I’m against social media. It’s all instant gratification. You feel good at every like, comment or share. You get that dopamine rush. But at what cost? You miss out on a lot of the beauty of life. You’re too busy posting about pointless stuff instead of strengthening your relationships and enjoying life to the fullest. Then wonder why the years tick by and you never find fulfillment. I will not let social media drive a wedge in between my marriage and relationship with my son. There’s more important things in life.

Social media is the recent revolution, just like in past we had Agricultural revolution, Industrial revolution, And technological revolution. We just don’t know how to get out of it because we have become accustomed to it, knowing that we are being consumed by it.
We create things to domesticate them but in real our inventions domesticate us.

I have a history of quitting Facebook. Months go by and I'm not online. I'm happy. I started a new job and had drinks with my new coworkers. Moment of weakness I reactivated my account. Friend request galore... for a few days.
I spent hours scrolling to see what I've missed over the months away. I basically missed nothing. People bragging about their amazing lives... traveling the world and their genius kids who got a participation certificate.
What I noticed... No one, not a single person noticed I wasn't around for months. No one cared. I'm not there, so I'm not the audience for their big stageshow they call their perfect life. They can't get likes off me if I'm not there. Who cares about this antisocial weirdo.
One change i did notice in myself which is really worrying to my mental health (it happens every time I'm on social media ) I became obsessed with trying to impress those on my "friends" list. I wanted their likes, their approval and their attention. When I would get a notification (it was a rare thing) I would hope it was the nice looking guy from work. It never was. It is super worrying because I'm happily married. The guy from work has a family. Why am I chasing likes from someone I don't want in real life but online... give me attention.
I found myself scrolling for hours, waiting for attention. My husband doesn't have social media and I could see him watching me stare at my phone all evening and get moody because no one would message or comment.
I feel more invisible and lonely while I'm "connected" to all these people than when I'm offline and doing things I actually love.
I've deactivated my account again. I'll see how the next few months go and after those few months I'll go back and permanently delete my account.
    Social media is posion.
I don't see RU-clip as social media. I don't post content. I don't seek attention. I watch videos I feel will make me happy, laugh and hopefully educate myself.

Here's what I've observed: Leaving social media makes you a kinder person. It just does.

  • Amy
    Amy 11 дней назад

Quitting all forms of social media has been the absolute best thing for my life. Although I am also working on using the internet less for frivolous reasons, I find that the absence of social media alone leaves me less stressed, overwhelmed, and frankly, irritated.
Lots of people in my life acknowledge that they should probably leave social media, but I guess they don't have a big enough reason to do it just yet. I have been called self righteous by some of my family members for deleting all my social media accounts--but the less I used social media, the more sensitive I was to its effects, and I couldn't keep it any longer. I sincerely wish more people would stop saying they should quit it someday, and just do it. It truly is a happier life without it.
Deleting something like Facebook initially will give you anxiety about "missing out," or losing contact with international friends. Don't believe these irrational fears. I have two friends in France who I regularly keep up with via email and, shockingly, snail mail. These encounters are 10x better than random snippets of conversation over something like, say, Facebook Messenger.
Do it, folks! Let's be the people who pioneer this movement. Think of all the addictive, psychological ways social media sites demand your undivided attention. Think of all the people in your life who you could actually pay attention to, and love fully. Think of living in the real world and banishing those dark demons of jealously, angst, anxiety, and stress that result from even just 20 minutes of scrolling.
You will honestly never go back.

I have only RU-clip, Facebook and Instagram, but Facebook I would say is the most useless of all them all. RU-clip at least offers you a wide and dynamic platform for educational purpose. I mean we won’t be able to see this video if it weren’t for RU-clip. For school and university students, it does provide you with a great source of education and it does expand your knowledge. As a political science student, I find it useful to watch historical or current documentaries on the subject, watching interviews with professors and so on. Instagram I use it for uploading my dancing videos, photo shoots and fashion designs that I Do as a hobby and also for keeping in touch with everyone in my environment by daily bases, as well as with friends abroad that I don’t see so often. My point is, if you know how to use social media responsibly, then I don’t think it is harmful. Also in terms of situations like terrorism or natural disasters, it is so essay accessible for everyone, everyone updates everyone on what is going on, missing people can be located, videos from the disasters can be uploaded etc etc etc. I think we need to take these things into consideration. It is a useful source for news spreading. (Apart from fake news of course).

I quit periscope for a year and did not go back it was addicting. I then stop going on social media which took my anxiety away. I do not watch TV at all and I go on You Tube once in a bit. I do not go on Facebook at all since 3 years. I have notice more people that quit social media started to not have depression and anxiety. I read the bible which has changed my life and I have learned that I can live without many things that I thought I needed. I also lost 45 lbs my life has changed for the better since I go online less.
True at first it is painful like an ache but it goes away eventually. I now help people quit social media which now most of them started offline businesses.

It really is freeing to stop social media. It is like a brag-a-Thon on there. I fell into the trap and whenever I did something fun I had to post it: Oh, look where we went. Look at my kids. Look at this. It's ok to be proud of your kids, but social media really does seem to bring you into a different mindset. And it's easy to get into arguments with people you don't even know. I felt like FB was HS all over again. People fighting over politics, parenting, personal issues. And you're laying your life out there for people other than your close friends and family to scrutinize. There's email and phone to stay in touch. I have a new FB but I just have maybe 2 close friends and a handful of family members added. I really don't post a lot and it feels great.

All the important events I go to, all the sports teams I am part of share all their information on social media so it makes it easier for me to track and plan things. Some of my friendship griups also communicate a lot through social media, again arranging events etc. So whilst I agree that it is damaging in many ways, I can't get rid of it for those other reasons.

With all due respect, sir or professor, this matter is subjective. I see these medias (Instagram & Facebook) as a platform for business and entrepreneurship instead of "entertainment". Sure, it does serve several elements of amusement, but it all comes down to the person's discipline. I'm a mechanical and manufacturing engineer. I have instagram and facebook (and of course, youtube) account. These platforms allow me to see my real life friends updates even though we are separated by distances and different places. I only follow those that I know in my real life, I only accepts friend request from those that I know in real life, so really dude, I don't see any harm of these (specifically) two platforms. Unless a person doesn't have self discipline and make the social medias as daily part of lives for every minutes, swiping through and through, then that where the negativity starts. Otherwise, its a positive platform ( *for me* ). You have privacy settings. And seriously, we can control of what we share. There are many private things in life that I do not share in these platform. Additionally, I have several friends that successfully run their business using these two platforms. I'm a person that do not watch televisions. So these two platforms serve as a side e-news sources from which I followed useful *official* pages and accounts (for example, Manchester United 's official page.) Nice form of delivery though. I respect your endeavor in trying to engulf the positive sides with many negative perspectives. I have many points more to go but I will leave it at that. Thanks to anyone that reads until the end.

The first time I came to the realisation that social media was taking over my life was when I saw a mother’s video of her daughter walking for the first time. Then it struck me.. I didnt want to miss my little one’s first steps! How can you stay in and enjoy the moment while you have a device in your hand, looking at the screen and making sure it turns out to be social media worthy? I cant say I quit social media, but maybe post every 2-3 months..The other day my little one took her first steps, my husband started yelling to get me record it, but i refused to..I enjoyed the moment to the fullest.. For her following attempts, we did record it but only for the sake of keeping it as a memory to ourselves. Another way to look at this, what if there is a worried parent out there because his/her child can’t or isnt able to walk and comes accross my video.. and the train of thought continues..
