I'm sorry, but Melancholia beats out Stanley Kubrick on this one. Lars Von Trier creates so many layers of emotions/anxiety, that it will take quite some time to sort it all out. The cinematic artistry stands alone. He had a specific vision based on his own fears/anxieties, and he had the guts/courage to follow it all the way through. And kudos to Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland and Cameron Spurr for realizing the vision that was required for this masterpiece. The planet Melancholia was a metaphor for depression. This is expressed in a purely un-scientific manner as he deliberately charts the path of Melancholia in the famous "dance of death" illustration. It comes at you, creating a sense of anxiety and hopelessness, seems like it will pass you by, then eventually circles around to come back at you and forces you to cope. Brilliant storytelling and cinematography by Lars.

The more unusual fact about "These Final Hours" is where it was set and filmed: Perth, Western Australia. It's extremely rare to see a feature film shot here, the vast majority shot on the east coast, in Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane

It's fucking ridiculous to include that stupid #5 with the actors yet not include "Testament", the 1983 movie nominated for an Academy Award for Jane Alexander as Best Actress.
Also, one cannot mention "The Day After" without mentioning "Threads", the BBC TV movie which is actually considerably darker.
One should mention the 2000 remake of "On The Beach" which was a TV series in Australia.
But, finally, an honorable mention should go to "Childhood's End", the 6-hour, 3-part SyFy movie adapted from the iconic Arthur C. Clarke novel. The Earth itself actually is visually destroyed as the last human children consume its matter to use for energy in their final evolution to join The Overmind.

  • Loki Loki

The best "end of the world" movie was "Annihalation of Earth"! Shown in December 2009.The planet leally was destroyed. Unfortunately this movie is not available on RU-clip.
And "Knowing", again the planet was destroyed!
These are really the end of planet earth movies!
Maybe we can include "2012", where humanity and all life was wiped out, except for selective groups to repopulate planet earth.

seeking a friend for the end of the world, was incredible. at the end of the movie i was upset lol, i was mad that in the end they actually died. i honestly wasnt expecting them to die, i was hoping for a happy ending. but over time i grew a love for it because it let me realize that happiness isnt always the end in all cases. theres sadness, pain, crying, fear, and love in other cases. we decide what emotions we will have in our end. we dont know when our end to life will come and we should live our life how we want instead of living our lives with people who cause us pain.
so uh overall- live your life to the fullest because honestly.. we can die any second.

The Mayan actaully predicted everything they wrote about it's just that there calendar actually randomly stops there, who knows the man who wrote it actually knows the end of the world.

    • SSJRadioBluth
      SSJRadioBluth 10 days ago

      No it's multiple cycles.
It's based on the celestial bodies moving in the sky. They didn't predict anything.
They just had different harvest cycles mapped for... THE AMERICAS.
It's very big headed to think the Mayan calendar was meant for more than accurate mapping of Earth relative to the other bodies. The tides and stuff including the major storm seasons are LITERALLY what they were trying to understand. Which is why it was the most accurate for several thousand years. Because it accurately interpreted the electromagnetic fields on Earth. They stopped because they also accurately predicted technological advancements as well as society's own constant hindrance. But not on the MAYAN calendar. Just as general belief. The way George Washington believed the same thing about America.
The only thing it predicts is the next lunar cycle the next solar year their own time for harvest and growth.
The other cycles are based on different aspects of their own beliefs. This is probably the last cycle they could accurately describe as it seems Earth's magnetic field had been shifting for a few years now.

HERE's WAT I WUD LIKE TO SAY about WORLD END. Back in 2000-2003, I WAS OBSESSED with WORLD OVER-POPULATION PROBLEMS. Maybe I READ TOO MUCH OF THE STUFFS in BOOKS like "POPULATION N ENVIRONMENT SCIENCE" since GRADE 6 N EVERY YEAR AFTER. I wud DEBATE WITH TOMMY SAYING "OMG the WORLD is IN DANGER, maybe OVER-POPULATION WILL LEAD TO WORLD DISTRUCTION ONE DAY." to which TOMMY WUD SAY "U HAVE GONE MAD. U STUDIED TOO MUCH. Maybe if SUCH THINGS HAPPEN, most PEOPLE WILL DIE OF HUNGER but there WILL STILL BE SOME PERCENT OF SURVIVING PEOPLE who WILL CARRY ON THE WORLD RULE N ALL". Anothet FREN BUKKA HAD THIS THEORY "These GODS R SO SMART TAT ONE DAY THEY WILL BOMB EVERYBODY N U KNOW WHAT KINDA PEOPLE THEY WILL CHOOSE AS SURVIVORS. All those HARDCORE RELIGIOUS PEOPLE like CHRISTIANS so TAT THEY WUD CARRY ON THE LEGACY OF GODS FORWARD TO THE NEXT GENERATION N PEOPE IN THE FUTURE GENERATION after the WORLD DISTRUCTION wud STILL BE FOOLS as the PREVIOUS GENERATION". So in BOTH OF BEST FRENS OPINION ON WORLD DISTRUCTION, ONE THING WAS COMMON which was "THERE WILL BE SOME SURVIVORS N THEY WILL CONTINUE STUFFS in this PLANET AGAIN". So there is NO SUCH THING AS MAYBE COMPLETE ANHILATION as I THINK GODS R NOT STUPID TO BLOW UP THEIR OWN PROPERTY EARTH THEY SPENT MONEY OR WATEVR FORTUNE FOR BUILDING AN ALL. They WUD WANT TO RUN THIS EARTH BUSINESS FOREVER. So they WILL LET SOME PEOPLE LIVE at the END OF THE DAY INSTEAD OF BLOWING UP THE WHOLE WORLD. Maybe PEOPLE WILL DIE BUT THERE WILL BE SURVIVORS. There's NO SUCH THING AS PLANET DISTRUCTION. ITS A PROPERTY N SOURCE OF WEALTH for OUTSIDE PEOPLE.
