Kyler Murray is 'too small' to be No. 1 pick in NFL draft - Stephen A. Smith | First Take

  • Published on Jan 10, 2019
  • Stephen A. Smith of First Take says the Arizona Cardinals should not take Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Kyler Murray with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NFL draft because the 5-10 QB is "so short." Max Kellerman says Murray is more athletic than other draft prospects including Ohio State Buckeyes QB Dwayne Haskins, but remains unconvinced that he will be a better NFL quarterback.

Break down of Stephen a Smith criticizing a player
    1. Him going against or saying no
    2.Him saying but.
    3. Him saying something good about the player.
    4. Him going back to the bad stuff about the player.

Can we PLEASE stop using the argument "how will he see over the offensive and defensive line." Quarterbacks dont operate that way. Aaron Rodgers is 6'2". His shortest listed lineman are 6'3" and his tallest are 6'5". QB's see through windows in the lineman. It's just how it works. Give me a break. It is the one of the most annoying arguments I have ever heard. I hated in when Drew Brees was coming out of my dad's alma mater, I hated it when Russel Wilson was coming out, and I hate it now. Not to mention scheme fit is a huge factor in all this. How many air raid QB's have flamed out in the NFL because their coaches tried to make them into something they aren't? Kase Keenum is about the only one I can think of that has been in the wrong system most of his career (he started under Fisher in LA not McVay) and been able to carve out a respectable career. I think Josh Rosen's ceiling under Kliff Kingsbury would have been a mirror of Keenum being in the wrong system. If Murray was put in the wrong system, his ceiling would be maybe like a Mike Vick (not a great comparison cause Vick wasn't an air raid QB, just best example I can think of). But with the fits these two QBs now have with Rosen and Jim Caldwell and Murray with Kingsburry, I think both of their ceilings are massively raised. Steven A is Steven A and Max is just too used to Dave Gettleman thinking it's the 1980's and he's going to hand off to Saquon 60 times a game and have Jones throw 5 yard slant routes 10x's a game. Thank you Will for understanding 2019 football and the direction these teams are trying to take. Not that "pro-style" and west coast systems don't work, but you have to add wrinkles and you have to have those explosive type of players who can take those 5 yards slants and turn them into 50 yards tds. Giants had someone like that and they traded him for a DT. At least the Cardinals took the FBS leader in receiving yards with the pick they got for Rosen to help out their young QB. The Giants traded back into the first round for the slowest of the top 4 CB's. Sure none of it matters until these guys step onto the field, but for the first time in a long time, I can say the Arizona Cardinals are one of the more forward thinking teams in the leauge. It may not work. But I tip my hat to them for calling an audible and taking a different approach considering its not like we've had a ton of success doing it the other way.

Murray is going to struggle BAD. Most college QB's throw as many passes in a season as Murray did his entire time at A&M. His legs will be a non-factor in the league aside from when they get crushed by men twice his size and just as fast. Cardinals just wasted their last 2 1st Rd picks.

The Cardinals are making a huge mistake to take Murray #1. They need too many players to draft a qb especially when they have a young one that could still be good.

  • Old Man Doom
    Old Man Doom Month ago

It isn’t height. How gives a shit about that? He is 190 lbs TOPS. He would never play a full 16 games in his whole career. Russell Wilson is 220 lbs if solid muscles and even HE is breaking down after all the damage he has taken. Neither Robert Griffin nor Lamar Jackson lasted a full season because of a lack of mass. Any team that invests that highly in Murray to play QB is clueless and deserves the disaster. Maybe he will become a Dante Hall and be a decent KR, but he will never last taking the punishment that any typical NFL QB takes

+nalim lattarai Please name a quarterback that small that runs a lot in the NFL that could stay healthy. Michael Vick is perfect example of why I seriously doubt that boy will make it in the NFL. If he wants to play football that bad, then he would be a better fit for the CFL where it favors offenses more than the NFL does. The defensive players in the NFL would rock his ass anytime he tries to run wild! Want another example why I think someone his size has no business entering the NFL? De'Anthony Thomas. Please tell me more how I'm dumb. What would be dumb is if a team drafts Kyler Murray in the 4'th round, let alone the 1'st.

Size clearly matters to a pocket QB with Brees being the only outlier I can think of, but as a dual threat and the rise in popularity of college offenses in the NFL he can be the difference maker in at least 5 teams off the top of my head. (Jags/Giants/Dolphins/Bucs/Cards)

What a stupid philosophy. That's like buying multiple lottery tickets, cause you increase your chances of winning. Ive always been a big believer in taking the best available player. Don't reach and don't trade up. I'm trying to think of a team that trade up and gave away multiple high round future picks that it helped their team out immensely and didn't hamper them for the future.
