Ansel and Rachel's voices are so perfectly matched here. And, wow, the visuals of the new movie make the 1961 version look like they were just filming the stage play. There's nothing like a great-looking movie that is all about design, lighting and sets, not CGI. The movie feels alive, real and vibrant.

Agree with the lovely harmonious voices here! However, for those of us who have watched the original a zillion times, starting as kids, it’ll hold a special irreplaceable part in our hearts. See, sometimes the lack of detailed surroundings allows one’s imagination to develop and really delve deeper into the story and people. Cause it’s not all just provided for us.
And, respectfully, I feel the acting was more skilled in the original.
Obviously, a vantage point from a different generation here…
      Sigh.
I’ll never ever EVER forget that poignant last scene in the original, breathtaking.

I do not understand why so many critics are bashing Ansel Elgort's performance. I think his Tony is excellent: Beautiful voice, amazing dancer, and if his performance is not as vibrant as some of the other actors it's because his character is more introspective than previous incarnations.

    • C Johnson
      C Johnson 8 days ago

he was great. And it made total sense that his Tony only gets really intense while in a fight - in the Crazy Boy number, and in the rumble - that was the point, that this was a dangerous young man, the founder of a street gang, trying to suppress that side of himself because he knows it leads to a dark place, but it's there inside him and when he's pushed you can see how he landed in prison before. I love the story they wrote for him and the way it was played.

    • Kami Clements

I agree completely Jon. He was INCREDIBLE!!! Tony meant so much more to me watching Ansel play him. He put his whole soul into that character! And I completely fell in love with his voice!

This will bring a whole new generation of fans into the mix and into the joy of West Side Story. Both versions are wonderful. The new version I notice has a wee bit too much auto-tune electronic assistance for and Ansel elgort's voice.
I think his voice is good enough that he did not need much assistance. Still very enjoyable. A lot of people still do not know that it was not Natalie Wood and Richard beymer's voice that we heard singing all the songs but rather hired professional singers. At least with the new version they use the real actors voices to my knowledge. This play has deep meaning for me. I played Chino in West Side Story when I was in high school and my ex-girlfriend played one of the Jets. She and I are both Caucasian. Brings back a lot of enjoyable memories. Enjoy the movie everybody it looks wonderful and looks like a labor of love from Steven Spielberg.

They were singing it out loud for sure. Probably took a lot of takes but it's their natural voices, no editing. Although it is audio "cleaned" in quality which is why you barely notice the voice imperfections. I listened to it in IMAX over hundred times now with best sound quality. It's not edited like most other songs in this movie. The most edited song in the remake is the one in the church. It is borderline unnatural.

    Only you
You're the only thing I'll see
    Forever
    In my eyes

    Ever
And there's nothing for me but Maria
Every sight that I see is Maria
    Tony
    Tony
    Only you
    Every thought I'll ever know
    Everywhere I go you'll be
All the world is only you and me
    Tonight
    Tonight
    It all began tonight
I saw you and the world went away
    Tonight
    Tonight
    There's only you tonight
    What you are
    What you do
    What you say
    Today
All day I had the feeling a miracle would happen
I know now I was right
    For here you are
And what was just a world is a star
    Tonight
    Tonight
    Tonight
The world is full of light
With suns and moons all over the place
    Tonight
    Tonight
The world is wild and bright going mad shooting sparks into space
Today the world was just an address
A place for me to live in
    No better than alright
    But here you are
And what was just a world is a star
    Tonight

@DavidinSLO not have subtitles was the right thing to do. I get that the movie needs to make money but I don't think losing the integrity of the project is worth it. Honestly I didn't even know they were doing that until I saw the movie.
I think what hurt the movie is COVID (I myself didn't get to see it for this reason and I know a lot of people who didnt either) and the lack of promotion. The lack of promotion might have been caused by the allegations against ansel that never got addressed

    • DavidinSLO

A enjoyable film, but sadly only made $70 million at the box office (it needed $300 just to break even). So, yes, a box office bomb. I realize I might be in the minority here, but director Steven Spielberg’s comment about why the Spanish (more like Spanglish) dialogue wasn’t subtitled was foolish, and only alienated millions of (generally older, conservative) potential theater goers. The film was honestly good. There was no need to constantly broadcast how “woke” it was.

Totally agree. Since I couldn't even get him to come see me in WSS in high school, and I pulled the "friend card" on my best friend Chris and made him go with me. The friend card is for emergencies only and never to be used lightly. He absolutely loved it and actually said thank you for taking him. I knew he would love and appreciate it. I told him afterwards that it really isn't a typical musical. It's an actual film, and the songs are the soundtrack. He completely agreed. Perhaps you can tell your hubby the same. I have seen it several times, and just gets better and better. Spielberg's version is so wonderful

@asterisco I think it's different for marvel movies because they just have a cult following. Especially with all the hype for this movie and having all the different spidermans. People were literally willing to risk their lives for it
West side story is more like a movie people would have been interested in seeing if they still went to the theatres regularly but probably wouldn't risk it during covid and figured it'd come out on a streaming service eventually (which it did). Also I think they didn't promote this movie at all. Might be in part due to the allegations against ansel and not wanting to draw attention to it but not sure. All I know is if I wasn't such a fan of rachel I mightve forgotten it was coming out

Ansel Elgort was sick when he went to his audition. When Spielberg learned this, he brought him back, had him audition again, and gave him the part.

He is my biggest star of this century and I thank him. He is heartfelt, he is talented! His role in "The Goldfinch" made this film better for me than it was a book. This is my favorite movie role from him ! And for me was he the biggest star in "West Side Story" (his Tony like me more then first Tony) and because of him, I went to the movie 10 times and cried every time when Tony died !

My mom and I saw it on Sunday and really enjoyed it. At first I wasn’t sure about Ansel as Tony but boy what a great job he did! Loved how he was more aggressive than Richard Beymer. Loved that “Cool,” Number he did with Riff! Amazing! Rachel was really amazing too as Maria! Nailed it!!
I would just like to also say that I have been hearing all these ridiculous stuff about how Ansel sexually assaulted 14 year old girls and I would like to simply say this. “Innocent until proven guilty.” Interesting how these allegations came out after WSS was filmed. The girl who posted the allegation on her Twitter account deleted her account and comment. Coincidence? To all you idiots out there who are believing trash talk on social media will look stupid when Ansel is proven innocent.

I need some help here! So i’m not super advanced with musical terminology but i am familiar with some, the part in this song for example when tony sings: “Today, all day I had the feeling, a miracle would happen.” I just find how the notes are arranged and composed it’s so beautiful, almost satisfying to listen to. Is there a way to describe that composition in that part of the song? Sorry if this is a dumb question, I just love it and want to find more similar arrangements. I’ve heard a similar progression in other songs too. Feels like relief almost?

I suspect that you're enjoying the satisfying handoff between tony and maria. The note she sings before his entrance and the note he starts on are acting as leading tone - a half-step below the root of the chord, AKA something that's really building tension. Our ears are trained to hear these leading tones as _really_ leading into the tonic note, which just so happens to be Tony's next note, which then leads into a diatonic scale pattern to continue the melody. It's great melodic writing, very satisfying! I would just call it a cadence point.

Only you, you're the only thing I'll see forever
In my eyes, in my words, and in everything I do
    Nothing else but you ever
And there's nothing for me but Maria
Every sight that I see is Maria
    Tony, Tony
Always you, every thought I'll ever know
    Everywhere I go, you'll be
    All the world is only
    You and me!
    Tonight, tonight
    It all began tonight
I saw you and the world went away
    Tonight, tonight
    There's only you tonight
What you are, what you do, what you say
Today, all day I had the feeling
    A miracle would happen
I know now I was right
    For here you are
And what was just a world is a star
    Tonight!
    Tonight, tonight
The world is full of light
With suns and moons all over the place
    Tonight, tonight
Thе world is wild and bright
Going mad, shooting sparks into space
Today, the world was just an address
A placе for me to live in
    No better than all right
    But here you are
And what was just a world is a star
    Tonight
    María, vente pa' dentro
Sí, ya voy, me estoy vistiendo
    Tomorrow
    Tomorrow
    Sí, okay
Wait, wait... I forgot why I called you
    I'll wait 'til you remember
    Good night, good night
Sleep well and when you dream
    Dream of me
    Tonight
