Secret Wood Bowl DIY

  • After making my version of the secret wood rings, I knew I wanted to try and scale it up!
This bowl is made from splintered walnut and polyester resin. I ended up making a very large blank and turning most of it away! While I'm more than pleased by the end result, I think I could have minimized the resin usage with a bit of planning...
Regardless, I ended up with a cool and unique bowl! I hope you enjoy this video. I know I enjoyed making it

The guy hasn't a clue about setting up a mould. Square hole in a round peg springs to mind not to mention the amount of resin down the plug hole.

I cant help but wonder how much cooler that bowl would look with some space between the base of the wood squares for the resin to fill

Why plain it if you’re going to beat it with a hammer, encase it in resin, and turn it on a lathe? Beautiful work, and it inspires me to my own shenanigans. Just curious about steps one and three.

Unfortunately the resin makes it not food safe. More of a show piece.

Why do you buy polyester resin if it's so hard to turn?

All of the comments about waste are correct. All it needed was a sacrificial core to be set into the mould and at least a third of the resin would have been saved.
