Secret Wood Bowl DIY

  • Published on Feb 20, 2017
  • After making my version of the secret wood rings, I knew I wanted to try and scale it up!
This bowl is made from splintered walnut and polyester resin. I ended up making a very large blank and turning most of it away! While I'm more than pleased by the end result, I think I could have minimized the resin usage with a bit of planning...
Regardless, I ended up with a cool and unique bowl! I hope you enjoy this video. I know I enjoyed making it

Why is it a SECRET wood bowl?

Ay the Bog of Eternal Stench, if my memory serves me well that is a reference to The Labyrinth with Jareth the Goblin King played by the greatest man of all time David Bowie, and my name actually came from that movie, but instead of Jareth it is spelled Jerrith

Where is the secret? Or is the fact that it’s a secret mean you aren’t gonna show is the secret?
*did it split in half or explode on the lathe and you fixed it without telling anyone?!?*

@PeterBrown I got some earrings as a gift and they're great but they are made of wood, VERY lightweight and I'm afraid of getting them wet if it rains. How do I apply a non-smelly non-toxic waterproof shine and finish or enamel on the earings?

but.... A lot of waste of your time, efforts and epoxy!
All those cracks you made in on pieces of wood would be beautiful ander a less colorful layers of epoxy 😉 .

All of these comments about waste are ridiculous. Not every turner has coring tools, and maybe just a suggestion on a waste plug to conserve resin would be nice instead of being ridiculed. Your work is fantastic. The bowl is beautiful. Continue to inspire.

So after watching your video I wanted to try making one. Out of curiosity does the smell ever go away after it hardens? I only have one layered poured at the moment but even though it has been about 3 weeks it still has a strong odor. Does this go away? Thank you.

Really should use it outdoors or in a extremely well ventilated area. And still use the mask. 🙂

Your work is exquisite young man. I’m also a wood turner and my specialty is roots that have been in swamp or lake or river for quite some time. Isuggest you try it at least once. Don’t be alarmed at fist the wood is spongy Saturday it with olive oil and put i#in the oven for one at the time, you will eventually see it bubble. Take it out and saturate with olive oil. Numerous time until it seems dry. Not too dry. Put it on the lathe and begin the roughest oh the bowl. You will see amazing wood design and colours. Don’t do mor e then th e rough. Put it back in the oven at 200 for 45 minutes. Take it out and reapply olive oil. Let it set in a dry areas for 2 months. Then finish it. You will love it!
