Dark5 presents a top 5 list of vexing mysteries that left behind few clues. Can you solve the cases? Learn more:
    5. STENDEC / Star Dust
Star Dust (registration G-AGWH) was a British South American Airways (BSAA) Avro Lancastrian airliner that vanished over Mount Tupungato in the Argentine Andes on 2 August 1947. The last word in Star Dust's final Morse code transmission to Santiago airport, "STENDEC", was received by the airport control tower four minutes before its planned landing and repeated twice; it has never been satisfactorily explained.
    4. Kaz-II
The Kaz II, dubbed "the ghost yacht", is a 9.8-metre catamaran which was found drifting 88 nautical miles (163 kilometres) off the north-eastern coast of Australia on 20 April 2007. The fate of her three-man crew remains unknown, and the mysterious circumstances in which they vanished have been compared to that of the Mary Celeste.
    3. The Eilean Mor Lighthouse Keepers
Flannan Isles Lighthouse is a lighthouse near the highest point on Eilean Mòr, one of the Flannan Isles in the Outer Hebrides off the west coast of Scotland. It is best known for the mysterious vanishing of its keepers in 1900.
    2. Circle K Mystery
Terrance Williams and Felipe Santos vanished in 2004 and 2003, respectively, under similar circumstances in Naples, Florida. Both men were last seen with former Collier County Sheriff's deputy Corporal Steve Calkins. He claims he changed his mind about both apprehensions and last saw the men after he dropped them at Circle K convenience stores
    1. La Mancha Negra, “The Black Stain”
La Mancha Negra (The Black Stain) is a mysterious black substance that has oozed from roads in Caracas, Venezuela, first appearing in 1986. After nearly two decades of study and millions of dollars spent to identify the substance and its source, finding the cause has proven difficult and there are still no definitive explanations.

The Eilean Mor lighthouse mystery is bizarre, to me, because the men wrote in the log that there was a storm, couldn't see any ships due to fog but passing ships said that the lighthouse was off.

The lighthouse was in Scotland, not Ireland. Also, what if he said "sever winds the likes of which I have never seen before in twenty years" as a metaphor? As in they had a fight and if the log ended that winds calmed suggests that the writer (whoever he may be) killed them and himself (since his body was not found).

Those guys in Naples, Florida were falsely arrested then taken out and executed by a sheriff deputy. Witnesses saw at least one and probably both men as they were cuffed by this cop who denied arresting either. Shot in the head and fed to Gators. The deputy was fired due to a lack of trust but no evidence was ever uncovered to arrest him. He moved to a midwestern state starting a landscaping business and remains free to this day.

The cop one was obvious: he killed them and got away with it. What a flimsy story about dropping them off at a store, though. Why would you take a man away from his vehicle like that? If he was driving without insurance, tags, license, etc., then the cop would either let him go with a warning or tow his car and slap him with some tickets. Very bizarre that he would just drop the guy off at a store like that.

The Star Dust isn't really a mystery since it's wreckage was found. The plane was in a jet stream and flying in the clouds, they thought they were past the mountains because of the amount of time they had been in the air. What they didn't know was the jet stream caused the plane to make less progress on the flight than thought, they descended from the clouds and crashed into the mountains.

Venezuela floats on an ocean of oil. Trinidad and Tobago, right next door has the largest pitch lake in the world. Natural asphalt just oozes up from the ground and is literally mined to pave roads! It has maintained its level ever since its discovery! How that stain isn't oil related must be some kind of joke.

You know that white cop killed those two guys of color. Just because they didn't find the bodies. Probably wasn't ever even any real investigation anyway since so many cops and white people in general are racist and no one cares. These days cops don't even need excuses. They can just shoot anyone of color or white in some cases for no reason at all in broad daylight in front of thousands of iwitnesses and all recording it all on camera and the cop would still be found innocent. Cops in the Klan go hand in hand. Thugs in uniform. MuriKKKa

The "Black Stain" I would think would be simple to resolve. Roadbeds are made from organic based asphalt. Depending on where the material came from & to what degree the crude oil was refined,, it could be having some type of widely unknown chemical reaction at certain temperature or atmospheric levels when conditions change considerably. The authorities in that area more than likely haven't sent samples off to the right engineering dept. for proper testing. Asphalt also breaks down considerably into a black gunky mess when transmission & various vehicle fluids mix with it,, it loses a lot of it's tinsel strength,, again becoming gooey/soft in nature & depending on how large the spill is,, can leave very large areas dissimilar to what normal asphalt beds appear.
Perhaps a disproportionate amount of vehicles in that area leak a lot of secondary fluids all over the highways & the original asphalt mix is inferior to normal roadbed standards?
I mean it's a road for gosh sakes,, what else could it be?

The British South American fleet seems to have been a particularly unlucky operator - another two of their Lancastrian fleet, the Star Tiger and Star Ariel disappeared en route to Bermuda around the same time as the Star Dust - speaking from memory here. The planes were converted Lancaster bombers (hence the type name) which was a reliable, robust machine, making the latter disappearances all the more unusual.

The last one makes no sense it cant be a sticky goo and slick as ice, its either sticky or not or slick or not but not both. They should try razing the road surface to a height above the goo if its that big a problem.
