What is the best diet for humans? | Eran Segal | TEDxRuppin

  • Prof. Eran Segal presented conclusions from the research on the TEDxRuppin stage and made us question common dietary beliefs.

    For additional information see genie.weizmann.ac.il
New research led by Prof. Eran Segals and Dr. Elinavs research unit indicates a drastic change in blood sugar levels between two individuals on identical diets - this may explain why some struggle to lose weight while others, on the same diet, stay lean and fit. The scientists even developed an algorithm that can calculate ones blood level based on his or her biology and lifestyle.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

He presented a well thought out scientific study with very interesting and useful findings, especially the effect of gut flora. A great leap forward indeed. (Many be he said 15 not 50 meals per day! Many folks miss breakfast for example.)

Perhaps the 50 “meals” is meant to imply 50 incidences of glucose variation as in every time you grab a piece of food so snacks and even say a cup of coffee with cream and or sugar or say a handful of raisins or nuts,. In any event these types of discussions are interesting but most of us knew that this was probably a fact. We all know some people that can eat everything and their weight stays the same.
Taking blood sugar after every snack/meal and tracking it is a good idea but for me its going to get to be too much.
My questions are does not maintaining a good weight more or less imply that your blood sugar levels are reasonably consistent ? Would not a poor choice of foods lead to weight gain ? Did the speaker ever say why he lost so much weight and how he did it ?

Nothing new here....The late Dr. Joseph Kraft ...conducted glucose tolerance tests and responding insulin assays in over 14, 000 subjects!...the insulin assays were better predictors of diabetes in situ than blood glucose levels ( ie..one can be diabetic or pre type 2 diabetic and still display normal blood glucose.)...all doctors and dietitians will give not provide the best advice about optimal diets until they read his book " Diabetes and You" ....what is more unique about his studies....he also investigated associated pathology by autopsy in different age groups with various responses to insulin....incredible and eye opening!

What is he talking about? He mentions that if there are different proposed diets that it should be easy to compare them scientifically and see there results. And then somehow implies that's been done but the results weren't conclusive or that good diets were advised and even followed but that didn't work and then gets immediately to the idea that different diets are best for different people. Wait a minute. What happens when we compare beans and vegetables and fruit to high animal foods or to high sugar and refined foods? The 1st is far better. Sure, you can vacilate between saying animal foods versus refined carbs, but you can't beat produce.

Seems to me there could be a basic flaw with their study: Unless every participant ate the same brands of food, the baseline would be skewed. Different manufacturers use different types, quality, amounts of ingredients to make their produce. So one brand of white bread, for example, could have a different effect from another brand of white bread. Just Saying.

There must be a universal food that's the best for all humans. Why would we be any different from any other animal on Earth? All animals, every single one, have their ideal food. Humans must have it too, we simply must. I refuse to believe we don't. Crippled genetics and failed natural selection have ruined our natural balance. If 99 people live healthy on nuts, meat and fruit, and 1 can't, that 1 dies and won't breed. But as it stands now, 50 out of 100 can't digest/handle certain foods, and with synthetic medication and alternatives, they survive fine, and breed their failed genes. Study that and confirm it.

+koruki 1000 people means nothing. Humanity, in billions, are diluded down with weak defect genes, and has been for over 100 years. Unless you have no defect, you're excluded from any true experiment. Humanity has an universal diet that's perfect for us. Anyone with allergies or bodily defects should never breed.

Thought to be around 6000 years old, the word literally means knowledge of life. The main focus is on the uniqueness of each individual and the treatment being delivered accordingly to treat body and mind holistically.

Big claims for such a small diet that does not take into condieration other factors as absorbtion rates via fiber , everthing centers around glucose. spikes . Anyone interested in SOLID evidence base science should review studies that are peer reviewed, published in reputable medical journals and crossed referenced in meta analysis. Such as the NIH-AARP which covered 545,000 thousand men and women over a decade. Also the China Base study which I believe was easily several hundread thousand over decades, blue zone studies, etc... all are conclusive that diets rich from plant base sources are ideal and healthiest, or you can follow the herd with the latest fad and listen to people wanted to sell you something on vague, flimsy studies. Some people want to always hear good things about their bad habits, i.e eating ice cream. If you are a truth seeker then do your homework and your own research. Good luck. Rodney

As an Irish, Scottish Canadian, it was not surprising in the least that the diet on the left was the bad diet. Muesli (oats and fruits, not typical to my diet), Sushi - I don't like raw fish and seaweed and it is very high in sodium, Marzipan is a confection consisting primarily of sugar or honey and almond meal, sometimes augmented with almond oil or extract. Clearly going to spike blood sugar, Corn has never been known to be good for you and high fructose corn syrup is widely known to spike your blood sugar, nuts are good in moderation, and coffee and chocolate are both high in sugar. Again obvious to me. Except for the ice cream, which melts slower, andis lower in calories because there is a lot of air in it, the rest of the diet barely has any sugar.

Best diet idea for each individual is definitely a good idea. However, it doesn't really dismissed that there should be general diet recommendation for people. Ice cream maybe better for you than brown rice and it could be the opposite for other people. But generally eating carbs and sugar will spike your blood glucose. So why eat them at all? Also, food like ice cream is not created equals. The sugar in each product are different. The second thing I would like to further see is the insulin spike for each kind of meals individually. We seldom think that blood glucose spike will be directly affect insulin spike. But that is not the case. I think we should studying more about that.

Counterintuitively, people on the carnivore diet tend to have elevated blood glucose levels. This is because protein gets converted to glucose through gluconeogenesis... So meat is sugar when consumed in large quantities.

And the funded study award goes to????LMAO ...i do believe that (processed sugars)not glucose is a big problem with diabetes and insulin spikes ...a well balanced diet for each person would help alot with obesity and some diseases linked to sugar and carbs (bad carbs) but its not gonna prevent heart disease ,cancers and other illnesses....i think this is part of a good experiment but in a deeper experiment you would have to do a cell overview or test like this one to see if what you are eating is not promoting or supporting cancer cells to multiply....other wise this way of eating is just a way to make people last longer or look better but at the end you will die from the same diseases ...because if you dont die the same way the government would be loosing money....since plant based is becoming more and more the answer to people not only for a healthy body but also to cure and reverse all of the top illnesses we have now a days...they have to start telling you some truth about what you eat to keep people in the loop....now you will look healthy outside but inside its a different thing....just a thought...people we need to wake up...consciousness is the key....you are what you eat....

Some foods such as pasta are quite dense and have a low glycemic index. So if you consume pasta you may not trigger an insulin spike immediately or within 2 hours. Does that mean that pasta will not spike your blood sugar? NO. It will. On some people a spike may happen up to 4 hours after eating pasta. In this example, it would skew the research results.
