I would put a few more coats of clear on and then buff out the clear with several very fine grades of wet sanding, and complete with rubbing compound and polish. You will end up with the most professional finish and those imperfections will be history. I am not a professional painter, but followed the process when painting the plastic coil and engine covers of my GT Mustang. The finished product looks like it was done by a professional painter.

You could make a tent out of plastic to keep out the dust. By the way did you use a tack rag before you started painting?

That front part is the one people will notice the most, like you said it will get the most abuse, if you wax it, I think the bumps will stand out more, like zits. Make the cute one fix it.

You need to look up 2k paint primer and clear coat and than a 1k color all available on ebay . The 2k has a canister inside the can and you activate it by pushing in the canister than the 2 parts mix together just like a professional painter would do it. It comes out like glass it's 40 for the primer and clear coat and you can get any custom color mixed in a spray can for 30. I'm doing my frame bars risers triple trees and pulleys white I'm on the primer now I ran out but it's coming out perfect so far. Spray Maxx makes the clear coat and primer 2k.....the only thing is the primer has a 24 hour shelf life and 48 on the clear.....

in talking to guys that do paint you can do really fantastic work with a rattle can. it is in the preparation and the environment that really helps with the end result. if you are satisfied with your work it is your bike. cant be in a hurry though or not take time to do over. it happens all the time.

About 99% of all lessons can be learned on RU-clip. I watched one video and decided to make my own sausage. I made 64lbs that day. Worth it.

You "cant" or you haven't tried?? I always like to tell people this. Even the lead mechanic of the best racing team in the world at one point in time knew exactly what you know now. Just go DO it! If you mess up, it's not a mistake, it's a lesson. You'll know exactly what NOT to do the next time.

Mistake you made was sanding in the painting area. Should have done the sanding outside. You want as dust free painting area as possible.

@Bike N' Bird If you blow over the job with a compressor before paint, then that could be your huckleberry, compressors spit out condensation moisture and oil mist, which is why paint shop compressors run wall mounted condensers to 'dry' the air... all due respect mate, just trying to help... Jake Smith's comment about the tack rag was dead right, love what you're doing, bike's gonna look great, cheers, Del

@Bike N' Bird Mission success with the 30@30 rule though!

    • Bike N' Bird
      Bike N' Bird  5 months ago +1

I hit it with a compressor before I started so I really dont think it was something left over from my doing prior to the paint going down. Definitely think it was airborne particles that landed after paint went down. Where there's particles came from there's no telling

    • Jake Smith
      Jake Smith 5 months ago

@Bike N' Bird It's also not a bad idea to go over it with a tack cloth before you spray to get any particles that found their way on there.

    • Bike N' Bird
Bike N' Bird  5 months ago

That would make more sense. I usually take more precautions for my paint jobs (as in the sportster build) just didn't expect this many problems

OMG......I would be sick with all the crap in the paint. No way I could put those on my bike. Well as long as you can and are happy it's all good.

@Bike N' Bird I painted the fairings on my 03 vfr800 black. Had a spray gun and compressor going, and the asshole neighbor started mowing. I redid the baselayers. Was a major PITA to sand and prime and respray, especially considering the dirt was in the clear coat. :(

Just added comment about garage doors. I forget to say if that spring hit you it could have serious injury. Just Google find fix.

  • Weaver Kevin
Weaver Kevin 5 months ago +4

I'm garage door tech you have no safety cable going threw the existent ion spring for you're doors. If one of them breaks it could go through the wall or hit you're bike. Something to think about.
