Overclocking with a stock air cooler?? Is it even possible?

  • Опубликовано: 24 апр 2018
  • When AMD released the Wraith cooler it was widely accepted as a decent stock cooler... what about AMD's new Prism cooler found bundled with the 2700x??

The ORIGINAL wraith cooler came with the fx-8370. (much later in the fx series life) but that's how I acquired mine lol. Also they're the exact same cooler, Except mine doesn't have RGB.. ;(

AMDs new stock cooler designs is one of the reasons that (for the first time in my life) I am leaning red team for my upcoming upgrade. Ryzen7 2700X, or i7 9700K?

Old AMD Opteron's and phenoms used to come with heat pipe coolers as well that worked great. Intel stock HS/F is just a waste of good metal.

I managed to overclock a 1700 to 3.989ghz on the stock wraith spire led with 1.265 volts stable, and never gets over 70c under full load. mostly around 64-65c. I tried over 4ghz, but that required a volt jump that put me over 70c. so just under 4ghz is where I rest with a stock cooler.

Just got me a 2700x and Aorus x470 Gaming 7 WIFI mobo, Prism cooler looks banging, you get the same cooler but without all the rgb with the AMD 7870k CPU, good little cooler, Knocks Intel's cooler right off the shelf.

Just built my new rig over the weekend, specifically using the 2700x and for now the Prism cooler. The plan is to throw and AIO at it soon enough, but first I need to replace my old GPU. Unfortunately I couldn't budget for a newer card and everything else was necessary to the budget, but for now I'm happy.

A x470 mobo instead for OCing. Try going for asrock or (my recommendation) msi x470 boards. Gigabyte and Asus aren't performing right now. B450 mostly for the ryzen 5 and below.

I am glad AMD coming back, but to anyone who asks why not Intel, and "AMD is better!!!" Listen to a simple explanation
Intel still better for gaming. Because i7 4790k still beats all of current Ryzen chips for gaming in 90% of games. i7 8700k on the other hand is about 30-35% better than 4790k, so it lays Ryzen on its' back in gaming. 8700k potentially giving you up to 20-30 fps more than i7 4790k, while i7 4790k beats the top end Ryzen in 90% of games, or matches it.

    i7 8700k > i7 4790k > Ryzen chips currently

So yeah...single core performance is not to be scuffed at on Intel, I owned 4 AMD cpus, and only 2 Intel's to date, to know the difference between them.

Once you go Intel, and you know what to buy, you probably will not go back to AMD, unless you render videos and do workstation tasks. Then Ryzen beats Intel in that price bracket, but if you want top of the line, then Intel still has the crown with their i9 chips.

Choose with your wallet, based on the performance. I bought i7 8700k, and I know how good that chip is. I managed to do an easy overclock at 4.7 ghz, under 1.21 volts
Less power draw, even better overclocking than 4790k, and overall better perfomance of about 20 fps in games, without upgrading the gpu.

Also 8 cores 12 threads. Do I need to expand more on this, and I used to be behind AMD for a while, but their architecture for gaming is NOT there on the level of Intel...yet

Maybe new Ryzen? But I doubt it will beat Intel 8700k, let alone i9 9900k, I don't expect them to beat i7 9700k either.

But don't take my word for it. You can put in:
    *Ryzen (pick model) vs Intel i7 8700k/i7 9700k/i9 9900k* in RU-clip search.
    It's simple evidence.

Oh yeah, and I am running 4.7 ghz delidded 8700k at about 55 Celcius in games, and max temp of 70 Celcius in Aida64 stress test on Cooler Master Geminii S524, which is not even as good as water cooling.
Intel still has the gaming market for the people that know where the juice is. Do some research, look at numbers and decide. It's money to performance balance.
Best CPU on the market right now for gaming is i9 9900k, but it's priced accordingly.
When you buy Honda Accord, don't say it's better than BMW, because it's simply not. Or don't compare Ford Mustang with Mercedes. Because Honda and Mustang are good cars, but nowhere as good in engineering in comparison to their counterparts.

Research, look at reviews, see the game benchmarks, and don't listen to people in comment section. Because when I scroll through, I just kind of smile at it, because most have no idea about what they are comparing to.
If you owned both platforms, you know exactly benefits of each platform.
My AMD FX-8320 would render better than i7 4790k, but i7 smokes FX-8320 in gaming.
Amd is king for rendering on the budget. KING.
Intel is king for gaming at the according price. KING
Both are good, but AMD hasn't hit the perfect price point.
Intel is like Nvidia in many ways. Quality and performance
AMD is AMD. It needs help, it needs better engineers, but they are getting there.

Also...there are plenty of i5 processors from Intel that are better than many i7s, and much better than Ryzen chips in gaming and even rendering.

Did anyone manage to overclock the 2700x on air? if so, how much? (Voltage/Multiplier) I also upgrading from an old A10-5800k/ FM2 mobo to the MSI x470 Gaming Plus/2700X. Keeping my 2 year old RX 480 8Gb, 750w coolermaster PSU and my Samsung 850 SSD drive.
Video wise, I just bought (2/17/2019) from Ebay another RX480 8GB @ $105 shipping included. That should get the video around 1080 perfomance in many games. In my case, it is cheaper to get another 480 (to XFIRE) than it is to get a single decent current gaming card ($350+).
But, as Jayz, I digress, I am interested if there is any advantage in FPS to OC'ing the 2700x? Or is it negligible compared to stock?
    Thank you for your time.

Sigh, I know better now but I used the thermal paste that came with the cooler. I used info from here and a couple of the other channels like Jayz, I'm pretty sure I mashed it all together and did the above. HWM says the package temp never goes above 72c during hours of BF V and I think I read the chip can go into the 90's. I've got Cinebench and it gets 1666 on cpu test. I also have my old R9 270 GPU maxed and the PC is very stable. Feeling info overloaded here. Is any of this okay or even good? I know, change the paste.

I don't get it, I have AMD Ryzen 2700x (stock fan) with Asus Crosshair VII, Ram G.SKILL Flare X Series 16GB F4-3200C14D-16GFX and have never bricked my system at 4.2 CPU, My Cinebench score is 1927 with no volt adjustment. What are you doing wrong kind sir??? Sweet spot for AMD 2700x is 4.2 and the RAM at 3200 CAS 14 is the other sweet spot, the lower the CAS the better... When I first saw you doing benchmarks with Cinebench in another video, I couldn't believe how low your scores were, I couldn't force mine to get below a 1800 score at stock! PS< the ram you were using was 16 CAS that's where your problem was, AMD is still very dependent on RAM....

Hasn't anyone noticed that the Wraith Prism is literally just the old AM3 125w cooler with an RGB fan?
The thing's always been good... It just looks better now with a new name and the fact that the 2700x is a lower TDP than the cooler it's rated for, so the temps are lower than people expect vs them being exactly what we expected when we had 125w CPUs (Phenom ii and FX) under the thing.

I just recently built my new system, after 5 (i think) proud years of service from my old i7 3700K.
    Old build: i7 3770K + 12GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 2666MHz + EVGA GTX1070 FTW
    New build: Ryzen 7 2700X + 16GB G.Skill Ripjaws 3200MHz + EVGA GTX1070 FTW
So far i'm super impressed by the performance of the 2700X and the Prism cooler. Yes it gets noisy, especially after you close it in a case, but honestly i never cared about my PC's noise levels since i only game with headphones and for "non gaming standard use" it doesn't ramp up the fan so it's not that noisy.
I teamed up the Prism with 1 front intake fan (120mm), 1 rear exhaust (120mm) and 2 top exhausts (140mm) - all the case fans are on the "quiet" profile - and temps are well under control even though i'm on the stock cooler with the stock thermal paste.
