American Soldier Describes 1957 Cold War Europe

  • To support my efforts to create more clips please donate to me at His perspective on the Cold War and what he saw in Europe is interesting. He was a young American soldier station at bases around Europe when Sputnik shook up the West in 1957. He was interviewed by a young videographer who I trained in 2007. I love first-hand stories by people who lived it and witnessed it and can talk about it as dispassionately as he does. #coldwar #westerneurope #sputnik #communist

Its easy to be a rich country and have a great life when no wars have partaken on your land and you've stolen all the wealth you have from the natives. Ah the US the most hypocrite country in the world. So glad their social system is falling apart and is a mess. Feel bad for the decent american people with common sense living in the US being labeled in the cripple bunch just because they were born there....

Its all propaganda. No regime is innocent. Nobody gives a fuck about citizens its all fun for rich people to laugh at us from their chairs. Sucks we are puppies of people we dont even know. Thats why I intend to live my life how I want it and I dont give a crap if it kills me...

Most western european states had the Communist Party in their elections: true democracy where, if the people actually wanted, could exit NATO e go into the Warsaw Pact. Luckly, in no western state the Communist Party won. Tho, in Italy the Socialists were many times in the government coalition.

I was there as an American soldier when the wall came down! I was a friend with a young Russian operator in Germany! America had 6 tanks on the fulda gap! The idea that Reagan brought down the Soviet Union is a great farce! What brought down the Soviet Union was vodka! My job in Germany was to die! I was the unit armorer and we only had one ten round magazine for each m16!

I was stationed in the western corridor of the South Korea during the 1980s as well. It was obvious that if the North Koreans ever attacked in force that the 2nd I.D. was just a speed bump until the country could be bombed into oblivion. But, bombing itself never wins the war on the ground, short of a

We had friends who went to Europe every year by steamer in the 50's and early 60's and they always took their new Imperial with them so they could be comfortable--I guess you'd call them Imperialists.

Delightfully insightful gentleman. At times he touches on the European perspective, although his views seem to be shaped by his official career.

Yes Tovar, what was old is new again. The cycle will repeat just with some shifting of nations roles in it. As Solomon said, there is nothing new under the sun. People rarely learn and so quickly forget and repeat.

@Tovar We are all materialistic consumers, capitalism won - outside of kibbutz's in Israel, nobody or group of any size gives Communism a second thought. Communism will always be the capitalists boogeyman. "Full stop" is another term for "ipso facto".

@DilbertHernandez odd. I mean maybe you cant think critically but I havent been arguing to you at all. No points, no stance, only me replying with shorter messages. Sorry kid but getting mad over my comment makes you foolish.

As rewarding as it is arguing with someone who can’t read too many words at once and who is incapable of making any substantive argument, I’m gonna have to let you go. Trigger warning: communist ideas live on... cry me a river!
